No you need to go back and read it again at look at it from another perspective. Try mine. I'm all for criticism when it is constructive. In my opinion, which I am entitled to like everyone else here, these comments are a feeble attempt to diminish the the magnitude of that day and that performance.No it wasn't her best, but it was important never the less. And when has debate or differing opinions been a nonstop love fest. This makes me angry and I am expressing that. I am entitled to as an Americn remember? So you lighten up. When someone criticizes something you hold dear remember that okay? Lighten up!

Am I understanding you correctly. You are equating criticism of a woman's ugly hat and her poor singing with people trying to diminish the magnitude of the day? Did anyone say her performance wasn't important, NO we just said it wasn't good. We said her hat was ugly not that she should never wear a hat to an important function again. Did anyone sat she wasn't a legend?

Yes, you are certainlty entitled to express your anger but why the need for it? You can come her and say "I loved her hat and her performance", and leave it at that, but you didn't.
I find that horribly sad that we can't even comment negatively on someones choice of clothing and accessories and their singing without being accused of something else. What a shame

Isn't that the point? And I'm not trying to change your opinion. I'm just trying to define mine. It's you who seem to have the problem with it. You are the one that jumped into this thread with a huge chip on your shoulder. People were discussing a hat and a singing voice. Some liked both. Some liked one but not the other. Some disliked both and even some disliked one but couldn't really care about the other. That's what reasonable people do. But I don't think anyone was trying to take anything away from the significance of the day. Sheesh.

I know. You can't say anything without being accused of trying to diminish the day a black man was sworn in as president. It's ALL about that. Just because people don't like Aretha Franklin's hat or performance. Give me a break.

I liked the hat. She looked great in it. Then again, I am a hat person.

However, her performance was not up to her own standards. When she was in her prime, no one could touch her. Now, given her age, health,and weight, she was merely exceptionally good.

And really people, there is nothing to argue about here. It is all a matter of taste. Everyone has a right to her own opinion.

It is not like Aretha is trying to sell copies of this performance as a single.
It is not like it was perfect.
It is not like the conditions and situation out there were ideal.
It is not like she is 25 years old again, just because that is what we EXPECT.

(Heck, I have seen some of today's best young artist have some really BAD live performances... But, it it is like we EXPECT the slick, digitally mastered, non-real stuff that we have become used to.)

I am sorry, but that song was a very wonderful and moving part of the day... (one of the most for me!!!)

Overall, I think that, in this case, having such high EXPECTATIONS and being so openly critical of a wonderful event is indeed both 'negativity' and 'hating'.

In a case like this, I think that the old saying holds true...

So you have NEVER made a negative comment (or been "hating") about anything? (Well, other than those pesky teachers and schools.)

No one is being critical of the entire event. Her performance was just one part of a huge weekend/day of celebrations. I really enjoyed some aspects of the day, others not so much. That is not hating.

I can't believe that not liking one minor thing on inaguration day is causing such an uproar. Then again, nothing here surprises me anymore.
