Aretha Franklin's performance...

:lmao: :lmao: I love Ellen, I missed that yesterday (doc appt).

I think Aretha's voice is not what it used to be. The hat? It was so "look at me", and I think it made her look old.

It was funny. Ellen said she was told there was only one of those hats in existence and what would have happened if she went to the inauguration and wore the hat too. (not her exact words) She also said that if they were both at the inauguration yesterday all the media would be talking about or asking today is who wore the hat better, Ellen or Aretha? :rotfl: :rotfl:

Can you guys just stop critizizing Obama already? its only been 24 hours and its getting old.

Just getting that in before someone else does. ;) Even though this has nothign to do with him and/or his policies just like his Tie thread, Michelle's dress and the benediction speech.

Well, I have not been criticizing, but I might if Obama wore that hat!! :rotfl2:

Thank you for getting that out of the way. :thumbsup2 ;)

I started to post this subject yesterday.

I didn't care for the arrangement and thought she has sounded so much better. It started out strong but went down quick.Though I guess I can give her the benefit of the doubt because it was cold and probably not the best acoustics. During parts it almost sound like she forgot the words and sort of mumbled through them. When she sang the word liberty there was no B.

Another that I though sounded way off her game was Mariah Carey at the Neighborhood Ball.:confused3

Now Beyonce, At Last, very nice!

That's my opinion because I'm such an expert!;) :mic:

But what about the hat?

Aretha is old, and I am very biased because I have been listening to her sing for years and still enjoy hearing her sing. Of course her voice is not what it use to be, but then again Beyonce won't sound the same either in another 25 or 30 years.

The hat is the type of hat I see women wearing to church every Sunday so it didn't bother me in the least. I would not wear that hat because I wouldn't be able to carry it off, not many women could.

I didn't like Aretha that much. I don't like it when the singers scream the notes.
Beyonnce did a fantastic job!

Anyone see the Ellen show today? She was "commenting" on Aretha's hat. :rotfl: :rotfl:

Not only does Ellen look better in the hat but I bet she could have sung the song better.

I was watching when Aretha started to sing and was HOPING she would do the song justice. My hopes were soon dashed and brought me back to when she sung Simon and Garfunkle's Bridge Over Troubled Water during the 1971 Grammy Awards. She performed a pretty sad rendition for the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, Grammy Award for Record of the Year and Song of the Year and Best Engineered Recording.

For me it wasn't about her voice, that woman can sing and she probably will always sound great. It was the rendition of the song, I just didn't like, thats why I didn't like the way she sounded.
The hat now thats another story, and I wouldn't want to be sitting behind it in church :lmao:

I love Aretha, but the arrangement just didn't work. It was like the song was too short to carry it the way she wanted it too.

I should have said "older", because when they interviewed her she had her hair down and she looked much younger than she did in the hat.

But what about the hat?

It is sad for me to admit but I have no words for the hat:sad2: So unlike me!
The first thing my husband said when he saw her was,"What do you think of that hat?" And again, I had nothing. I think I'm losing my game.:guilty:

OK, I'll try. I think if was pink it would look adorable on a big bald baby head!

:lmao: you would have to ask for a booster seat

You mean I go away for 1 day and there was already a thread critizing Michelle's dress, Jeez....

I'm splitting my vote. I loved the hat (I mean come on guys, this is the Queen of Soul we're talking about.)
Unfortunately the song, not so much. And coming through the speakers it was worse because you get that weird delayed sound effect that happens with large out door sound.
It took me a while to catch onto what she was singing.

I couldn't stop thinking of this:

And this will be the day -- this will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with new meaning:

My country 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing.

Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrim's pride,

From every mountainside, let freedom ring!

And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true.

And so let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire.

Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York.

Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania.

Let freedom ring from the snow-capped Rockies of Colorado.

Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California.

But not only there:

Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia.

Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee.

Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi.

From every mountainside, let freedom ring.

And when this happens, when we allow freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual:

Free at last! Free at last!

Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!

Was anyone else squeamish that her 'girls' would surely escape their rather too-small moorings :scared: ? My DD & I were watching yelling at the TV "DON'T MOVE YOUR ARMS...aaaaauuuuuuuggggghhhh...No no no! DON'T!"
