Aren't lanyards for kids a strangulation hazard?

My kids have never done pin trading before but I was thinking about it for our coming trip. I'm a little concerned about them wearing a lanyard and going on the rides. Are there any other options besides something that goes around their neck? I could just safety pin a wide piece of ribbon on their clothes I suppose. What do you do?

My girls wear lanyards from Disney. They have a velcro closure on them so they will break before they strangle them.

Aha! That's good to know. I don't let my kids wear their ski passes on lanyards because they are pretty solid fabric rope, so I assumed these were similar. Where did you buy the lanyards?

Our lanyards have velcro that will separate if pulled too tight.
Saw people wearing pins in shirts, hats, & Backpacks too.

the lanyards they sell at disney are the breakaway kind.

We always put away their lanyards when they were not actively trading - because (as we found out) pins fall off and get lost), also so they are not banging on their chests all day. Just stick it in a backpack pocket while not in use, pull out when the kids see a CM they want to trade with.

Ditto...we keep the lanyards put away unless they are trading. We've lost a lot of pins...and those suckers aren't cheap!

who sells backs that stay put, and are much cheaper than the locking backs. Totally worth the $ after we lost a few also. Those Mickey backs are terrible. :(

My kids have worn them both trips for 9 days straight and didn't take them off at all. They love showing off their collections. We also have the velcro ones from Disney.. but purchased from ebay ahead of time.

Just as an FYI, the fabric rope should have a plastic piece somewhere in it - that is designed to break in half before it can become a strangulation hazard. DD works at a local ski area and that is the way theirs are. She's had season passes at another area and they had the same type rope. If your ski area doesn't you might want to ask about alternatives.

Disney lanyards do have velcro and will rip open. The locking pin backs are worth the money - I buy ours lat the local Harley Davidson shop much cheaper than the Disney ones. They are the same thing. DD uses locking backs on her "keepers" and puts her "traders" in her pocket. She's 17 now so she pretty much takes care of things herself. She's been pin trading since she was 7 or 8. If your kids are young a great way to start is to watch for the CM's wearing a green lanyard or waist pouch - they trade only with children and are wonderful with the kids.
