I've only ever stayed at the hotels along Harbor Boulevard, but for an upcoming trip a group of friends is looking at renting a home just west of DCA. I think the house is located between Walnut and 9th Street, one block north of Katella. For those of you who have stayed in that area, I have a few questions:

1. Does the area and walk feel pretty safe late a night? For reference, several years ago, I had to walk back to the Pumba lot after park closing (midnight). It was very lonely and unnerving because it was pretty dimly lit and there weren't any other people Wang back to the lot.

2. I tried using Google Earth to find the best route to get to the house. It looked like cutting through the Grand Californian lobby looks more efficient than walking through DTD. Essentially, is that the best route to get to Paradise Pier/West Street?

Personally, I think that's a long way to walk. Especially after a long day at the park. I wouldn't do it.

EDIT: Oh, and BTW, that's west of DCA. :goodvibes

Thank you, I corrected the direction and title of the post. I knew it was west, not sure why my fingers typed east...:rotfl2:

Regarding the distance, yes, I know it's a pretty good walk (1.2 miles) but what I'd like to know about is the area itself.

If you do a Yahoo search for "Anaheim Crime Map" you can get stats for the last six months to year...Personally, I don't feel too "safe" outside of the DLR area (and the good neighbor hotels area). Wife, daughter and I stayed for a week two years ago and had some extra non-park days to explore (on foot) some of the surrounding areas. We were followed by a suspicious vehicle once and a bicyclist going the opposite direction as us, went past, turned around and came right up on us, when I turned around he stopped, turned back around and rode away in the opposite direction...probably a thwarted purse snatch. (and no not mine...my wife's.) I'm not paranoid...just safety conscious.

How safe a person feels is quite subjective so I am not sure anyone here can actually answer your question for you. Generally speaking, the residential areas around DLR are somewhat questionable in terms of safety as compared to what you may feel used to. As for actual danger, as the PP mentioned, look up the crime statistics for that area. Understand that there are a whole lot of factors between how you feel about your personal safety and whether or not you are actually at risk.

I wouldn't suggest walking that distance at night. I tried walking to the grocery store about a mile away from Grand Californian one night and couldn't understand why the hotel told me to take a cab. Once I left the hotel area I understood why. I was the only one out walking, it was dark and the area was not the best. I eventually turned around and went back. I did the walk the next morning and it was better in the daylight, but was a longer walk than I anticipated and the area wasn't the best. I know you don't want to do this, but you may want to take a cab.
