I just gave my mom and a couple of her friends 3 days at Vero when she makes her annual month long trip to Sarasota. She loves Vero but gets tired of the dining options on property. Does anyone have any suggestions on area resturants?

I highly recommend Ozzie's in Grant, it's just about 15 minutes down the road and a pleasant drive along the waterway. The seafood is fantastic. Portions are huge and fairly priced.

Squid Lips is my favorite...

Fire guts landmark Ozzie's Crab House

BY J.D. GALLOP
FLORIDA TODAY

GRANT-VALKARIA — For four decades, Ozzie’s Crab House has been a reknowned riverside spot for garlic crabs, music and talk of old Florida folklore.

Now, just hours after a devastating overnight electrical fire left behind $250,000 in damages, the owner of the aqua-blue wood and concrete-frame building on U.S. 1 has vowed to rebuild the local landmark.

“It’s pretty much a loss,” said owner Jim Shelton, standing amid the soggy, charred insulation clumped on the blackened floor.

“But it’s going to come back, I can tell you that.”

The fire – which started near an electrical box – was first noticed about 12:30 a.m. by workers at the restaurant’s bar, officials said.

Several Brevard County Fire-Rescue engines responded to the scene, battling flames as they licked inside the knotted pine-roof for the next hour and a half, officials said.

The 6,800 square-foot building remained standing but inside, tables, chairs and other were left smoke damaged and covered with soot.

Shelton, expecting to meet with insurance agents today, said the longstanding business had 36 employees.

“They don’t have a job. This is just a bad time,” Shelton said.

The restaurant could remain closed for the next three to four months, Shelton said.

Ocean Grill is always a good bet.

Out by the mall is Italian Grill -- pretty casual but very good Italian food

Fire guts landmark Ozzie's Crab House

MarriedAtDisney - there was no date on this article... when did this happen?

We really liked Ozzy's, too. What a shame... it was definitely a landmark.

We enjoy visiting that antique mall just north of the restaurant, then going there, afterwards. Bummer.

Hopefully they'll rebuild as they plan.

If you want a change from seafood, Too Jay's is a good choice - a sitdown, casual, reasonably priced restaurant with good deli food.

We like to have lunch at "The Lemon Tree" cafe. It is located in Vero Beach on Beach Drive....I think? We visit all the stores and shops and pop in for lunch. Great homemade soups and lemon sorbet is served after every meal.

Hmmm...

I drove by Ozzie's the other day and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary.

Cravings (near the Lemon Tree) is good for lunch.

Casey's Place (around the corner from Cravings) is good for a simple lunch-sandwiches, etc.

I've heard good things about the Red Garlic Bistro in Sebastian. I am going to try lunch there this week and I'll let you know.

The dining options in the area are lacking, in my opinion. I'd love a Macaroni Grill, PF Changs, etc.

Electrical fire guts Ozzie's Crabhouse in Brevard County

GRANT-VALKARIA — An electrical fire gutted the restaurant portion of Ozzie's Crabhouse early Thursday.

The owners of the restaurant, which has stood in the 6000 block of U.S. 1 in southern Brevard County for 40 years, said they'll plan to rebuild. It will be the third rebuilding project for Jim and Sandra Shelton since they bought the restaurant eight years ago.

Sandra Shelton and a few employees were closing the bar portion of the restaurant at about 12:30 a.m. She said a customer who had just left the bar returned immediately and said smoke was coming out of the restaurant portion of the business, which had closed at 10 p.m.

Firefighters arrived within 15 minutes of the call, she said, but the restaurant area was mostly gutted. No one was injured, the Sheltons said. Though the bar area was not impacted by the fire, Brevard County Fire Rescue condemned that portion of the business as well as the restaurant, Jim Shelton said.

The Sheltons said the alarm in the restaurant did not sound off during the blaze. They said county fire officials said they thought the fire was caused by electrical problem. County fire officials could not be reached for comment.

The couple bought the restaurant in 1999 and had to do a major renovation to get Ozzie's up and running in the style they wanted. They had to rebuild again in 2004 after the hurricane season, but that time they had help from the customers they had gained the previous five years.

"They helped us rebuild and we were able to open about a month and a half after the hurricane," Jim Shelton said. "They helped us because they wanted to be here. They're like family."

The Sheltons said they wouldn't have been able to reopen Ozzie's so quickly after the storm if not for the patron effort. Insurance money covered the damages, but the couple didn't receive that money for several months.

Jim Shelton said it was his childhood dream to own the restaurant, which was known as the Bishop's Inn when he was growing up.
