My DD was surfing the Disboards with me the other night. She asked me if she could sign up. I had shown her the teen area figuring this is the most the appropriate area for her...but, I also noticed that the conversations I saw in that section were mostly non-Disney chatter and at times a little too adult IMO. I think she agrees...but she likes all the Dis based conversation and I could see her surfing the other areas of the board.

Does anyone here have their kids registered and posting to the Dis? Also, for those who don't (or even if you do)...do you ever look at a poster's profile to see who your chatting with and that it may be a child?

You didn't say how old your daughter was.

I don't think I would allow a child to surf this board (and other adult oriented web sites) until she was in her mid teens. Of course mine is only 8 right now, so this is not the voice of experience.

She's a teenager-13...going on 14...which is why I checked out the teen Disney section of the board. Obviously quite a number of kids are on this board, but like I said, I was just curious if anybody ever keeps that in the back of their heads when they are posting. Maybe I'm the rare breed, but I will click on someones profile more often than not. I've noticed on the family board that a lot of kids tend to post here-I've even answered a few kids on the family board.

I realize that not everybody approves of kids being on here...or more specifically THEIR kids being on here. Its a personal decision and I respect everyone's viewpoint. I was not really looking to delve into that subject though because the "my parenting is right and yours is wrong" attitude seems to always crop up at some point in the posts and I am very turned off by threads that go in that direction. Unlike you, I just notice that some folks can't give their opinion and leave it at that-it deteriorates into name calling and insults. :sad1:

Anyhoo...more often than not, I don't think DD would be on the Dis without me by her side (much like she was the other evening...we made it a mom and daughter thing). I just noticed she enjoyed the family and planning boards more than anything. I told her I would think about her signing up on her own and that we would definitely have to put her age in her profile...but then I thought about it and figured...how many folks out there even look at the profiles of the people they are talking to? So then I thought that if I did allow it, we might put a blurb regarding her age in with her location so it could be readily seen. I don't know. I told her I have to think about it. Not sure I will allow it at all...but just curious who takes note of this stuff.

My DD is 15 and has been on the boards for a couple of years now. She actually posted before I ever did. I don't have a problem with her being on any of the boards here. They are really quite mild and are watched quite closely by the moderators. She hears many, many worse things in the cafeteria or hallways at school than she ever will here. If she watches any network TV she is also exposed to far worse and racier things than ever on here. I don't watch what she posts to or which boards she reads but she knows her computer use in general is monitored and she has been taught well. She is also quite smart so I trust her and she has very little free time to spend on the computer anyway.

I would not make a point of putting her age in her signature-to me that is advertising it to any weirdo who could be lurking looking for just such a thing. If this is the first boards she ever posted to I think they are a great and controlled place to let her get the experience.

My 2 DDs both post regularly here. They are 13 and 14. Although they go mainly on the teen boards, they also chat on the UK Community Boards too - pretty much everyone knows who the oldest is because of her username (wilma-bride'sdaughter - dead giveaway :rotfl: ). I don't have a problem with them being on here - they're pretty sensible and probably wouldn't even get involved in a thread which was too adult (they're both quite immature/naive).

It is such a shame that the search facility does not work properly at the moment - that is how I used to 'monitor' my kids' posting - mainly just to make sure they weren't being rude or making 'inappropriate' comments and to check the kind of discussions they were involved in. Nowadays I just have to trust that the 'talking to' I gave them on forum etiquette sunk in and that they are sensible enough to steer clear of 'weirdos'.

Ugh! I am very undecided on this one. DD got home from school today and again asked if I had come to a decision! I think I will tell her she has to lurk on the boards for a while as I ponder this a bit more. She is a smart kid and I trust her. I don't really think she would inject herself into a thread that gets those heated debates going on-she likes fun stuff and is just looking for an escape.

Hannathy: Your probably right about not posting her age. I was poking around on the teen board and noticed a lot do have ages in their profile...but I guess putting it next to her avatar or in her signature is definitely not the best idea. Sometimes I don't think of all this, which is why I asked all you other parents out there!
