DH and I were talking yesterday and we have decided to block certain kids shows that we think are in appropriate for our kids. To be honest we are just tired of all the "smart mouth" shows that are on tv these days! We don't allow our children to talk to each other or to us in this manner and here lately all they seem to be doing is quoting these shows. What
happened to the days of Full
House, Cosby Show, Tales From
Avonlea and the wholesome stuff
that I used to watch when I was
younger? Luckily I can DVR these
types of shows but I'm just curious
to know if any other parents block kid shows from their children and what those are.

Please no flames, this decision is what we fell is best for our children and by no means are we saying that others shouldn't allow their kids to watch them. Everyone should do what is best for their family and we feel this is best for ours.

So, what have you banned?

We ban inappropriate shows. We don't have cable, so that helps. When we deal with family that has cable, or travel, we will not watch certain shows.

Amazingly enough, the Disney channel is one that we will not watch live action shows. The kids seem to be parentless and with smart mouths and bad attitudes. Our how family was joking on our trip last week about, "What's up with the Disney channel?" As if Disney doesn't know that they have such a wide gap between their films and their tv shows in being appropriate for kids.

In our belief, you watch what you see. You pay attention to what you listen to. These things can affect you more than you realize so we protect our eyes and our ears.

I totally understand. I don't want my kids watching all the "tween" shows on TV. Over my dead body. They just seem to ooze disrespect to adults and bad attitude. Ugh. I'm not sure *how* I'm going to block them, but hopefully cable boxes will have that technology in a few years.

Suite Life -- either series. I think that there is just too much sassiness on that show, plus there is more relationship stuff than I find appropriate for my daughters.

^^ These ones. I call them junk shows and the little ones aren't allowed to watch them.

I prefer Noggin shows and the playhouse Disney ones. But the kids are getting too old of those so we're stuck with a lot of Spongebob (which I also don't like) and other Cartoon Network shows.

we tell the kids they can't watch certain shows as well. My kids are 3 and 5. I don't care for a lot of the shows on Nick and cartoon network, Spongebob in particular, so I don't let them watch those channels. I think the commercials on those channels are a bit excessive as well. I do let them watch everything on the Disney Channel and PBS, which are the channels they prefer anyway.

We have "banned" Good Luck Charlie and Chowder

Those are also banned in our house as are ICarly, Suite Life, and many other Disney shows. So many of the shows have kids who talk back to their parents and otherwise disobey or do things that should get them into trouble. My husband has even blocked the TV

Teen Nick should be banned from TV! I was shocked when I saw a video on that channel that had a nearly naked girl dancing and singing.

Of course there are different shows at different ages that we think are inappropriate. We also keep blocks on certain video games, the connections of them ,all the computers... The things we block change with the age of the boys.

I will totally agree with you and my little one hasn't even pop out the oven yet! My husband and I wonder the samr thing. What happened to the shows we grew up with in the '80's and early '90's? I would gladly let my child (when she gets big enough) watch shows like Full House and Family Matters, but wouldn't dare turn on the Disney Channel for her! :sad2: The cartoons these days are horrendous! Every time I see SpongeBob or any of those stupid cartoons, it feels like my brain is slowly oozing our my ear. That's why I have stocked up on Ducktales and Rescue Rangers and other cartoons that were wholesome and creative. TV will be watched over very closely in our home.

p.s.- Shows like Green Acres, I Dream of Genie, The Monkees, etc. are on my list of :thumbsup2

I wouldn't let my kids watch Full House if you are worried about talking back and acting like a brat. I hated that show because Michelle was allowed to act like a brat and they would just laugh at her....I don't think bratty children are cute at all..:confused3

My kids are 4, 2, and 6 weeks old we definately have shows that they are not allowed to watch. Right now they are fine with PBS but I anticipate that will change when they get older. Our plan is to not get cable so I'm hoping that will help.

I know when I was little there were a lot of shows we were not allowed to watch. One of them being Popeye because my father said he solved his problems through violence (can you tell my dad was a counselor? :)) Looking back, we probably would have been fine, but I have a lot of respect for my parents looking out for our best interest.

It's easier to say what shows my kids are allowed to watch than the ones they aren't (because there are a lot of them!!!)
They CAN watch...
- Special Agent Oso
- Curious George
- Sesame Street
- Chuggington
- Berenstein Bears (sp?)
- Super Why
- Backyardigans (only certain ones, though)
- Mickey Mouse Clubhouse
- Imagination Movers
- Blue's Clues
- Little Einsteins
- Word World
- Clifford

They are 2 & 5 and both like these shows. I DVR the ones I don't mind them watching. They never watch live TV because besides the TV shows, the commercials are awful!

I get not wanting kids to pick up on the "sassiness" alot of posters have mentioned, but I don't really get the part about kids disobeying or doing things that get them into trouble on the shows. That's the lesson of the show, the plot, the kids get into trouble, then have to get out of trouble, what else should the show be about? The kids on the Cosby Show were always getting in trouble, too and learning from it, I don't really remember the other shows the OP mentioned, I don't think I watched them.

What bothers me are the potty jokes on alot of the Cartoon Network shows (Ed, Edd and Eddy is banned in my house).

My kids are too old for most of the Noggin, Nick Jr. and Playhouse Disney shows and even my 6yo gets bored watching them. We still watch the tween shows and Phineas and Ferb, but we like to mix it up with game shows, Mythbusters, and the travel channel (we love Samantha Brown). The kids don't like to watch all of the reruns on Disney and Nick anyway so it's not hard to steer them toward other shows, but I don't ban them.

A little OT, but I used Zeke and Luther as an example to my 6yo just yesterday. He was being stubborn about wearing his helmet skateboarding and I said "Have you ever seen them NOT wear a helmet on that show?? And they're professionals, you've seen the tricks they can do! And they ALWAYS wear a helmet." He put his helmet right on. I do that with other shows, too: "Remember what happened when so and so told a fib?"

we don't have cartoon network but here is my list

when my 13 and 11 year olds were younger they were not allowed the Amanda Show and "All That" because of the attitude

right now the youngest is banned from any "live pre-teen shows" because he was learning things he shouldn't know at his age (his ban started when he told his 1st grade teacher how to give an atomic wedgie or something he had seen on Suite Life) I really don't like iCarly and Sunny with a chance

also not for the same reasons but as toddlers my 2 younger kids did not know Barney existed because I hated that show so much when my oldest discovered it something about a 5 hour car ride with a 2 year old listening to OOples and Ba noo noo's and If all the raindrops were lemondrops and gumdrops over and over and over gave me lifetime Barney Burnout
