It's generally my responsibility to make the holiday calendar for the coming year for our company, when discussing 2012 with my boss he was shocked that I was going to put down January 2nd as our first holiday (New Year's Day observed). I have been here for 10 years, we have never not had a day off for New Year. Most of our vendors are also closed this day. He sent me on a mission to find out what other companies are doing.

We are a small company so there is no option to have the company open but offer the day as an option, we are either open and everyone works or we are closed. We don't offer flex holidays either.

So for those of you that work outside of the home (mommies don't count on this one, mommies never get a day off) is your company open on January 2, 2012? And/or are you working? Is this a paid holiday off for you (if you get paid holidays)?

I received a letter from my kids school that there will be no school on Jan 2nd as it has been declared a federal holiday.

My school (private K-8 elementary) just decided yesterday that we would take it off. It was a mistake when the calendar was made. Lots of parents had been complaining, as most of them had the day off. My husband has the day off, and it was going to be strange to go back when he was at home-that never happens! Plus I'm going back to work after family leave caring for our son (adopted in October) and one more day sounds great to me!

Our PTO days for 2012 are 01/02/12, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and the day after Thanksgiving, 12/24-12/25

We're off only because 1/1/12 is a Sunday. Otherwise we'd be working 1/2/12.

DH is off too.

We follow the UPS schedule. Days they do not have ground pick-up or delivery we have off.

So yes we will be closed on 1.2.12.

January 2 is a paid holiday for us--I work at a college.

DH's company always gives January 2nd off too (paid). First official day back to work is the 3rd.:goodvibes

Both my DH and I have it off, as well as our kid's school.

DH works for a small company, they are off on the 2nd since new year's falls on a Sunday.

I work at a very large financial company. If the New York Stock Exchange is closed, we are closed.

January 2 is an observed holiday by the NYSE so we are closed.

Normally we have the 1st off as a paid holiday if it's a weekday.

In 2012, we have off the 2nd. If the 1st was on Saturday, we would have had off the 31st.

My office is closed on January 2nd. I work at a large University.

We are actually closed from December 24th-January 2nd, with pay. The students don't come back until January 17th.

Well shoot, looks like I'm the only one working that day! We are also a very small company and I also place the holidays on the calendar. I generally go by the federal government and originally made this day (along with the 26th) a holiday and the boss agreed. Then she decided we would close the Friday prior to Christmas and New Year's and be open on the Mondays. Go figure. :confused3
