Are you intimidated by cosmetic counter women?

I almost RUN past the cosmetic counters in department stores before the vultures land and want to "attack" me with a makeover. (I did it once and I looked like Tammy Faye)

Do you like them or loathe them???

Yeah, I ended up with a lot of orange. The base coat was even way too orange.:o I prefer to just buy it myself.:D

I admit I will go out of my way just to avoid them! <a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_13_17.gif' border=0></a>

I would really like some advice from cosmetic people who know what they are talking about....but I just don't think I'll get that from the people who are at the mall counters. Anyone have any suggestions?

HEY! Nuthin' wrong with Tammy Faye. I'm sure her business kept entire cosmetic companies in business!

For a cosmetics counter salesgirl a day spent with Tammy Faye and you could take your entire family to DisneyWorld for a week! :Pinkbounc :jester:

My Sister used to work for a cosmetic company in a department store. I don't go out of my way to avoid them, but I don't take their makeovers either.

When ever I get together with my sister I make her help me pick out new make-up. :p ;) :D

Wow, you know what I realized in reading this thread? I have *never* been accosted or approached by a cosmetics counter salesperson to have a make-over. Not once! I buy most of my make-up at Sephora, anyway, so I'd decline *if* I was offered. :)

I've never been accosted either, although alot of times I wonder if I should be taking makeup advice from someone who looks like Mimi from Drew Carey.

For the most part, the ladies at my store don't accost you as you walk through. There is one, that everyone runs from.

I do occassionaly wonder why they all dress like Pharmacists and Doctors. :p

Yeah, actually they do intimidate me. I mean what if I sat down there and somebody just said -- "don't bother, it's hopeless."

There's one that I swear must work every shift at one of the stores in the mall. She's ALWAYS there, and ALWAYS jumps on you.

The one time I let her "paint" me, she decided that "a little violet would really SET OFF my green eyes". Well, she didn't stop there, and I think I actually looked a little like Beetlejuice.

Generally speaking, I'm not a big fan (which is why a good makeup man or woman is a godsend and your new best friend). But I am not "intimidated," nor will I go out of my way not to walk by. LOL! A friendly "no thank you" works about 90% of the time, and an IceGlareFromHell works wonders on the overboard 10%. ;)

My sister was also one of the makeup people at a department store, Jenn Lynn. I loved that, she worked at the Clinque counter so I always got a deep discount. :p

I don't mind the makeup ladies too much -- although I have never had my makeup done, I usually know what I want and just ask for it.

Remember the ladies who used to stand there with a bottle of perfume just waiting to squirt? Now THEY scared me! :p Thank goodness they seem to have done away with that concept!

The perfume snipers we used to call them

Oh man! The perfume snipers? LOL, I ran from them.

You want to know the worst part about those perfume nazi's? They make about twenty bucks an hour, plus a percentage of sales of that particular perfume. (My coworker used to be one of the dreaded PN's.)

Mhopkins, a good friend and neighbor of mine is a perfume nazi. She only works about 14 hours a week and brings home about $35,000 a year. All she does is hand out cards with perfume sprayed on them. I have to say though, she probably spends about $25,000 of it per year on clothes. She has an unbelievable wardrobe.

I've never had a department store makeover. I had a couple by Mary Kay ladies though (my SIL used to be one). When I worked in a department store, most of them really intimidated me, cause they just seemed so snooty. But the manager of that section was really sweet (she dressed great, but she was down to earth).

I don't run, I just walk by and don't make eye contact.

OMG how funny! I am not intimidated by the makeup women OR men! I actually prefer the men because they are usually not overly made up!

I visit the counters alot. When there is a new product I want to try, I try it! I tell the person what I want........and I apply the makeup, not them. I know how I prefer to apply makeup and how I prefer to look, not them.

When there is someone who is trying to act snooty or intimidating, I reverse the act on them and then tell them that their approach does not/will not work with me and if they have any desire to sell a product to me, they need to change their attitude. Works for me.

I either get what I want, or I walk away;)
