Are you a right-lane driver?

Which lane do you prefer to drive in on a 4-lane road?

  • I like the right lane.

  • I like the left lane.

  • Lane preference is nuts... I could care less.

My husband and I just got back from a long road trip, and during the drive I became aware of something. While I tend to stay in the right-hand lane of a 4 lane road, he almost always stays in the left lane. We talked about it, and it seems that each of us feels more comfortable in our respective favorite lanes.

I thought EVERYONE preferred the right lane! :confused3

When you are driving on a 4 lane road, do you tend to stay in one lane more than the other?

I hug the line on the right side. I want to stay as far away from oncoming traffic as possible...

The left lane is for passing. I keep in the right lane unless I am passing...or if there is very little traffic and the left lane is smoother. (trust me, in pennsylvania, this is a valid issue)

If I do not have to get of the road for awhile, I'm a left lane chick. I like to live dangerously....;)

I use the left lane for passing and the right lane for getting on/off the highway, but for travelling pretty much stick to the middle lane.

It depends. If it's a road out in the middle of nowhere, I stay in the right, except to pass. If it's rush hour traffic, I stay in whatever lane is moving faster, usually the left since all the trucks are in the right lane.

AMEN!!!

:lmao:

In Jersey it's the law!!!! Drive right, pass left and they WILL ticket you!!!

If nobody is on the road, or there are less cars in the right lane, I like to drive there. If the left is clear sailing, I'll drive there until I can get around the other cars to the right lane. I hate following other cars, I have to be out in front.

i try to make myself stay in the right lane, but there are times that that lane needs work so bad that I wind up staying in the left! :) They just need to rework those right lanes more.lol

In the land-whale (SUV) I stay in the right lane for better gas mileage.

In the Vette it's bad for the engine to do the speed limit, so it's never in the right lane. :teeth:

I know that PA has a law, keep right except to pass. Nobody really follows it. Having said that, I will be in whatever lane is the fastest, least congested or in the least state of disrepair. If you don't like it, oh well.

I swear that this is also a regional thing from learning to drive. Honest to Pete I did not know until I was married that you could not drive in the left lane to just be driving in it:confused3 When I was learning to drive on the interstate in Arkansas it was just sort of known that the right lane was the chopped up lane because of big rigs and everyone drove in the other lane. I had no idea until I married my yankee husband that you were only to pass in the left lane. Now when we road trip he says it has to be a regional thing because more southern people drive in the left lane than up north but I joke because some of the interstates up north have 4 lanes going one way and the other two arent being used. I tell him thats just a waste;)

When driving, I use the lane appropriate for the speed I'm going in correlation to the general flow of traffic. Funny- you did not have that choice. There are various lanes for a reason.

I'm usually passing the eldery population around here, so usually the left lane, except they like to clog that up as well, so I really break the law and pass in the right. I am surprised I haven't been written for failing to maintain a single lane. :rotfl2:

I tend to stay in the right lane unless I'm passing slower traffic. If there are three lanes, I prefer the middle lane, especially at night. That gives me a little extra room if a deer comes from either side.

For me, it really depends on how traffic is moving. One thing I will try to avoid if possible, though, is driving in a middle lane when traffic is really dense. I was almost merged into once going 80mph (that's how fast traffic was going, I swear!) on I-95, and that "trapped" feeling freaks me out! I need a shoulder to swerve onto if necessary.
