There is a thread on here where the point is being made that Spirit can afford $17 fares due to the "income" from the club members.

Personally I don't think there are enough club members out there, but this board has LOTS of Spirit flyers so...

Are you a member?

Yes, we are a member, but we have not ever seen anything close to $9 fares pop up for our travel dates. We did pay $133 R/T for the base ticket before luggage and seat fees.

I don't think I will renew.

Well based on the underwhelming response to this poll I don't think this is a great money maker for Spirit! LOL!

Carol--My memory is travel insurance, and membership in the $9 club, are automatically selected when you purchase an airline ticket. Passengers are free to "unselect" those options. People who take the time to post on the transportation board are probably more likely then most to read the fine print when we purchase tickets.

My guess is Spirit gets a "reasonable" amount of revenue from the $9 club.

I won't bother joining since I don't think it's likely Spirit will still be in business by the time of my next trip.

You would hope that folks would cancel this mess when the charges kept coming every month!!! YIKES!

IMHO adding an automtaic fee like that is really "shady"

However, when this was first announed there was a big response on here where posters thought this would be great and couldn't wait to join.... Guess that didn't pan out like Spirit hoped!

(I still don't see this revenue being enough to make up for $17 fares as at least one other poster does!)

I don't like the idea of paying a company for the "privilige" of being their customer. This is just annoying to me. I don't even like having to pay to shop at BJs either but dh likes it and he does the grocery shopping so I let it go.
I wonder if any member of the $9 club has really gotten $9 fares?
I'll stick to my tried and true, ol reliable, Southwest.

You get something like 60 days for free followed by a $40 annual charge. My guess is many passenger won't object, but rather will figure they'll be able to fly for $18 R/T some time during the next year.

The catch is you have to purchase a R/T ticket and the $9 fare might only be available one way.

The skybus model doesn't work when jet fuel is a large portion of your costs. You may be able to nickel and dime passengers enough $$$ to cover the costs of a flight attendant but that's not the problem.

Edited to add $17 fare + $20 (half club fee)=$37 fare. You don't think a $37 fare is profitable?
Obviously you're having some issues with the "new math".
Bubba airlines will never get off the ground unless you use the new math.

I'm a member, but only because there is no charge if I use my Spirit MC once a month. When I got the cc I was given enough bonus points for a r/t flight - and just used my accumulated points to book a second 'free' flight for August - but I understand that even the rules for booking flights with points will change and require you to 'apply' for a flight and wait several days for confirmation - won't work for me when I'm travelling with the kids - it's book them all together or not at all since Spirit's flight change policies are so restrictive and their customer service is extremely time consuming if not totally non-existant (not to mention that their rates can change considerably from day to day- sometimes moment to moment!).

RE $9. club - I've never had a $9 flight come up that I can book anyway!!- not something that I'd pay one extra cent to join!

Yes, we are members. As a note though, the $9 fares are only for travel days Tuesday through Thursday. Friday - Monday are business and vacation travelers and they do not offer $9 fares on those days.

Well so far I am not seeing this as profitable enough to make it worthwhile to fly passengers for either $9 or $17. LOL! The percentages here probably don't reflect reality, but in my expereince this board has more "Spirit" flyers then I normally meet amoung travelers so if this group isn't paying who is?

I had been a member, just got the email sometime this week that I hadn't re-upped

Never in one year did I see one of those $9 fares for a time I could travel or a place I wanted to travel to.

I am on a three month trial membership but will probably not renew.I didn't even expect to actually get a $9 fare but hoped to get a decent shot at
a good discount fare to California.I came oh so close to snagging a $99 RT after taxes fare from DTW to LAX but had to delay a day to check and see if I could get the time off from work.It was still available in the morning before I went to work but was unavailable by the time I got home.In general it seems that the special good deals for the $9 fare club are just as elusive as the other sale fares that Spirit offers.I only paid $9 for the 3 month trial so I'm not out much money but I plan to cancel before the trial ends and I have to pay for a whole year.

I find this is becoming typical - there's a "BIG" $9 sale at Spirit right now - the ONLY fares listed that are actually $9 are the ones out of Fort Lauderdale to the Bahamas, Orlando or Tampa.:confused3 Kind of like the sales rack signs that say "Price: $1.00" !! (with the words "and up" in really tiny print)!;)

I think you can get the $9 to Carol's favorite location, Hati!:rotfl2:
