We are the opposite of everyone else here it seems!
Cruised a dozen times on Carnival (2 just this year - now platinum) and
Royal Caribbean (Oasis just this past year), but never a
Disney cruise. We've had a great time on all of them, our favorite way to travel is cruising as we have a 7 and 15 year old who love the kids clubs on those lines so much so that we have to literally drag them both out to spend time with mom and dad. We are NOT partiers nor drinkers and consider our tastes fairly simple so Carnival worked well (food in particular). Carnival entertainment never did anything for us (Except the comedy) and Royal food was lackluster but entertainment was MUCH better (Aqua80 show on Oasis of the Seas was hands down one of the best shows I have ever seen - at sea OR on land).
That being said, we now have a 7-day "Halloween on the High Seas" cruise booked in October on the Wonder out of San Diego. We wanted to do
Disneyland for 3-4 days in October but with the pricing and hotels right now the price came out almost the same as a guarantee on the Wonder for 7 days (crazy, right?). So, why not give
DCL a try? Yea, had to swallow the higher price point (especially compared to the comped gambling cruises we get from Carnival!!) but we are Disney fans (though, not apparently even close to some of the die-hards we know) and think this should be an interesting change (we are definitely getting tired of "routine" on Carnival).
My biggest fear is keeping the kids entertained. My oldest (15 yr old girl) is very shy at first, but does know to go ton the teen club on the 1st night to meet people. She has on every cruise and we never see her again. She is big on going to the arcade (which there isn't one on Disney) and going to play games like Foosball, movies, etc. She is VERY much into art/drawing (she is being offered potential scholarships already at 15 after her Freshman year into various art schools) so I am thinking DCL will be a super exciting trip for her. She would spend her entire day at the drawing class at California Adventure if we let her, honestly, so this should be good. She is also a huge Nightmare Before Christmas fan so hopefully that pans out well on this cruise, too!
My youngest is HUGE into Disney princesses. Everytime we do Disneyland her must-do is always Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, so I am sure we'll be spending some time (and $$$) there on this ship.
So I think the EXPERIENCE should be super positive. I guess we will find out soon enough!
