Are you a bad Christian if you work on Sunday?

I would take what he said as being judgemental, as if they are saying you are a "bad" Christian for wanting to shop on a Sunday, since he says the owner is a "good Christian" for not being open on Sunday. However, a "good Christian" would know that judging someone for observing or not observing the sabbath is wrong:

Colossians 2:13-17
13 When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, 14 having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him. 16 Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day-- 17 things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ.

I think it was a bad response.

I also think do not think ChickFilA and HobbyLobby close on Sunday because they are "good Christians". I think they choose to close because of obedience to God's Word and allow their employees the chance to worship with their families and rest. And yes, I think there is a difference.

It is my belief that if you must work on Sundays, God understands. If you can possibly take another day of the week to rest and spend time with the Lord, whether worshipping with others, in Bible Study, etc. it is probably a very good thing for your soul to do.

Keeping the Sabbath (whatver day you make it), isn't about following rules and "being a good Christian". It is more about the rest God's knows is good for your soul. Like Zip said, we are created in His image. He rested, we should rest also. It is for our benefit.
Our world has become a 24/7 whirlwind if you get the chance to slow down a bit, try it and see what happens. Better still, spend some of that off time with God. He'll usually amaze you. JMHO.

I don't think that working or not working makes any difference to God. I don't know about the church.

People need money. They do what they have to do. I'm sure God understands that.

And there are some jobs that have to be done 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. So, it was and never will be possible for EVERYONE to not work on Sunday.

Nice idea, though, scheduling everything in on the other six days and then taking a flippin break all day long, one day each week. At the same time, everyone else is taking a break - people could visit, go for drives, etc.

ETA: This just popped into my head. There was a "Little House On The Prairie" episode about this. Charles had to tend his crops. Caroline was all manner of pissed off. In the end, she agreed and helped him. That's all I remember, but I remember liking it.

My parents owned a motel when I was growing up. 24/7...365 days a year. Let me tell ya, God knows we need breaks!! LOL Just ask my mother!! ;)

To lower the rent, I cleaned vacated apartments when people left or were kicked out. I know what pigs people really are. If she cleaned up after people, she needed the break!!!

People are so gross. In a million years, I wouldn't leave things the way so many people do. Ew. Ick. Whatever happened to leaving things as you found them? My apartments were always cleaner when I left than when I arrived. And I always pick up after myself in the hotels.

Well, the mousekeepers love you then!
I do the same as you, drives DH crazy that I halfway clean the room for them.

Yes, my mom did it all and so did the whole family. And people are slobs. I always wondered if they were just lazy because of vacation or they really lived that way.
Some work on Sunday must be done.
However, I think devout Jewish (or Orthodox maybe??) keep the sbbath and don't do any kind of work. Am I right about that?

They really live that way. It is DISGUSTING.

I don't know about the jews. I didn't even know you didn't have 13 Ten Commandments. My guess is that Orthodox Jews would totally keep the Sabbath in the way they're supposed to, whatever that is. Reformed? No clue.

Some jobs, like nursing, have to be done round the clock, every day of the year. Illness keeps no schedule.

My guess is that the most devout Christian on the planet wants a cath lab open when his coronary artery closes off. I mean, they wouldn't literally rather die than have people working on Sunday, would they? There have to be some exceptions, I'd think.

I agree. The sabbath day is a blessing. If you choose to work that day (as opposed to health care woirkers, etc, who must work), you lose the blessings of a day of rest.

Yes they do and the sabbath day would be Saturday. I'm not Jewish, but live a life of Judaism and I don't work Friday nights or all day Saturday.

Blessings to you all. :goodvibes

About 11 years ago, I had a part time job at a mall store along w/ my full time job. Frequently, I would choose to work on Sundays. I didn't have to be there until 12:30, so I could go to church in the morning and then just go straight to the mall. I liked working Sundays for several reasons. I could get 6 hours instead of 3.5 I would get working at night during the week. DH and DD always went home after church and would take a long nap, so I wasn't missing quality time w/ them. Also, Sundays were generally not as busy and more laid back.

I think as long as an employer doesn't force someone to work during their "day of rest", it is fine to be open on Sunday. Of course, if you choose to work somewhere you know will be open on Sunday, you need to discuss your bosses Sunday work requirements before you are hired.

None of the Furniture stores, or free standing Boutique type stores (furniture, clothes, jewelry) are open here on Sundays.
Just mall stores and "Big Box"stores, and groceries are open.

I find nothing weird about that store being closed on a Sunday.

I think this post is just a way to 'pick" on Christians.:confused3 :sad2:

Nice big leap there. I don't think the OP was picking on anyone, except a less than diplomatic person answering the email.

I think the reply that the OP got was a not-so-subtle dig against anyone daring to want to shop on a Sunday.

I grew up in Mass, and up until just a few years ago, you could not buy alcohol anywhere in the state. A few more years before that, NOTHING was opened on Sundays, no stores, no malls, nothing. So I actually don't find either one weird.

I think that if you let other people define what constitutes "a good Christian," then, yes. They should have just emailed you that they aren't open on Sunday and they are trying to be judgmental with that response.

I have a sister who won't go shopping on Sundays for religious reasons. It's not something her denomination teaches, she just won't do it. Whatever.

Working on Sunday doesn't make you a bad christian, but praying on Sunday does. Sunday is God's day of rest, and I think disturbing God on his day of rest is not a good idea.

:rotfl2: I tried that one on my mother when I was a kid to get out of Sunday School! Didn't work at all.

I appreciate that I, as a Christian, am supposed to go to church--generally on Sunday morning. However, it would be much more of a day of rest for me if I didn't have to get up at 7:30 for Church!!;)

Well, I own a gift store in a tourist town and we are most definitely open on Sundays. I couldn't pay my bills if were weren't open on Saturdays and Sundays. Anyone who works for us knows they have to work when we're open AND when we're busy. Weekends are HUGE for us.

I think expecting employers to make their businesses not operate at a profit because of personal preferences is a bit much. We will always try to work around people's lives and schedules, but in the end, the hours I need are the hours my employees must fill. If the job doesn't fit your lifestyle, find one that does. I don't need someone to work on a Monday afternoon, I need someone to be there bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at 10am on a Sunday mornning to start helping the Sunday Brunch and walk around the town after church crowd.

I remember someone working in a very busy seafood restaurant *****ing about having to work on Christmas Eve, which is one of the busiest holidays of the year. You choose a line of work that involves weekends and holidays, you deal with it.

If your personal beliefs are such that you can't carry out your work duties as needed, what is the employer supposed to do? Close?

Maybe in some parts of the country where the whole county shuts down on a Sunday, that would work. But, in many parts of the country, it's the church folk who keep the local restaurants and boutique shops busy on Sundays.

Ironic, isn't it?

I must live in an area chock full of bad Christians. A few years ago businesses fought to be open on Sundays, they won :thumbsup2

Oh my gosh, how ignornant was the person you were on the phone with? Honestly, unless I really had no other choice I wouldn't even go there...I don't have a need for such blanant judgemental ppl. in my life. :sad2:

Ummm... I think it's pretty obvious that the OP stated it wasn't about the store being closed on Sun., a lot of places are it was the ignorant comment made by the person who answered his question.

Nope, considering the real Sabbath day is Saturday {7th day of the week as per the Hebrew calender when the Bible was originally written} until the Catholic church changed God's law and made Sunday the sabbath, technically you would be a bad Christian by NOT working on sunday. Read your history and do a little research and you will see what I say is true.:hourglass
