Are we using the recession as an excuse for lousy service.

So yesterday I'm shopping at my local Macy's and I find a lovely winter coat that I have been needing for 3 years at a really good price. I purchase the coat and when the sales girl goes to wrap it up she takes it off the hanger.
I politely ask her to keep it on the hanger and she says they are no longer allowed to give away hangers. :scared1: We go back and forth, very nicely she agrees that it stinks and since I use to work it retail so I didn't want to give her a hard time. I thank her, return the coat and go to customer service where I ask to speak with a manager.

Long story short, manager explains that they are in a slump due to the recession (like I don't realize it's a recession) & that this is a new policy to cut cost. I try to explain that he is losing a $200 coat sale for a $10 hanger, along with any potential good feelings I may have had about the store.

So, my question is are we accepting lousy service and lousy quality because its a recession?
My dilemia is that it really was the first coat I've seen in a few years that I loved and the price was great but it just galls me to accept lousy service.

I notice it here on the Dis. Whenever some one vents about bad food quality or a rise in prices at the world, we (I do it too) say "well it's a bad economy, every one's cutting back.

So you didn't buy the coat because they wouldn't include the hanger? :rotfl2:

Who did you spite but yourself? :thumbsup2

Interesting. Granted, it's been a few months since I've been in to work (school), but last I knew, policy at my store was, for regular clothes, to remove hangers unless the customer asks for them. I believe the quote is "we'd like to save money, but we'd like their money more". For coats, dresses, etc, the rule of thumb was ask if the customer wants a dress bag. If yes, they keep the hanger. If no, Macy's keeps the hanger (unless the customer requests it). Policies change everyday though, and vary depending on region. So who knows what I might find when I go back for the holidays. Honestly, I'd have given you the hanger. I'm quite certain they DON'T inventory them. Trust me, they don't have the staffing levels to. It's also *possible* that the rule there is actually no giving away wooden hangers. If that was the case, I'd have tried to find a plastic coat hanger (which are usually lying around) if the problem was the "hanging vs stuffed in a bag". But my experience is Macy's managers can't really think outside the box. Or in it, for that matter, many days.

I'm honestly stunned by this thread. My store BLEEDS money because it bends over backwards for the customers, to levels that go WAY beyond "customer service". Seriously, I've seen VERY few requests by customers denied. And most cost hundreds of dollars more than a hanger.

So did they have a nice selection of coats? I could actually use one....

Well, maybe, but I googled working for Nordstrams and most of the reviews agreed with the above poster. Not a great place to work.

Thanks!!! The people who think it's a great place to work-- the overpaid, stupid managers, and the pushy salespeople who will do anything (and i mean anything) to make a buck-- stealing other's sales, setting up co-workers to look bad to the managers! It's an evil corporation!

.

Not getting a free hanger is NOT lousy service
I just bought the jacket I was eyeing since August at 50% off-i was elated-no way I'd NOT buy it because of a lousy hanger!:confused3:confused::confused:

There seems to be many people missing the point in this thread.

I think I could only reach that conclusion if I assumed that the only possible legitimate perspective is the one that the OP put forward. In reality, reasonable people disagree on matters like this, so it is therefore reasonable to understand that people aren't generally missing the point of the thread, but rather expressing disagreement with the unilateral perspective of the OP.

I reasonably disagree. I believe everyone assumes the point was a coat hanger.

I disagree. I understand that the OP was taking a stand against what they thought was bad customer service but others, including me, do not think that it was bad service. And do think, in fact, that it was not worth NOT purchasing a coat they had been searching for 2 years, especially at a discounted price. If it made the OP feel good about taking a stand, then it was worth it for them but I do think the majority of the posters understand the point of this thread.:thumbsup2

You're welcome to believe that other people assumed that, I suppose, but it seems pretty strange to impose your belief about what they assumed despite their having told you that that was not the case. Generally, people are the final, indisputable arbiter of what they themselves thought.

Actually only two people have told me what they assumed and that was you and MissyDVC.

I know that they have a really nice red pea coat that's marked from $425 to $200! Or you can go to Nordstroms dot com and pay more - but the online shopping cart software has great customer service programmed right in and will put a hanger in the box for you...
