Just wondering if other families do the same things...
We went to dinner last Sunday, and I took out a baby wipe to wash off area on table that our 10 month old was eating from. When I was done, I looked at the wipe and it was black!:scared1::scared1: So immediately I started passing out wipes to the other kids and to hubby and we went to scrubbing the table. I know we had to look strange to other people sitting around us but EWWWWW!!!

Also, Hubby ALWAYS inspects his silverware before eating out. If it looks dirty he will request clean forks, knives. We usually tell a fib and say "Oh it fell on the floor!" so they dont get offended...we dont want spit in our food...:rolleyes1

Also, I freak when the kids have to use public restrooms....I line the seats with 5 inches of TP.....even been known to carry minature cans of lyseol.
And then after washing, I dont let kids touch the garbage lids to throw napkins away and we use clean napkins to open bathroom doors.

So does anyone else do these type of things? Or what is your quirks in public?

I don't know what makes a person normal, but I'm not that concerned about germs. I don't worry about table surfaces. I will put down a tissue cover in a restroom if the lid looks terrible, other wise not. I've been known to drop food on the floor and pick it up, brush it off and eat it. :confused3

I've slept on top of the bedspread in hotel rooms and I have wiped what appears to be dirty silverware off with a napkin and used it. It hasn't killed me yet.

I can say that it is not my normal.

Then again I would not let my baby eat off of a public table, that is kind of gross to me. I always got a plate for them.

I don't have an issue with public restrooms. When you gotta go, you go.

If I noticed dried food stuck on a fork I'd request a clean one, but otherwise I don't do any of that stuff. I don't eat off the table so I'm not too concerned with the surface, and I assume the plates are clean.

I'm not a germaphobe about the bathrooms, either. I think it's a pain to use those tissue covers so I never do. if someone has left the seat wet, I move on to another stall. Then I wash my hands and leave - and I don't freak out about the door handle, either.

I have a healthy immune system so I let it do its job, and so far so good. I also walk barefoot in a hotel room, use the remote without cleaning it first, and sleep on top of the bedpsread if I happen to fall asleep that way. Living on the edge!!:rotfl:

I don't worry about germs either. I thought everyone walked around barefoot in a hotel room and slept with the comforter until I came here. :confused3

I don't worry about this, I figure my food is on a plate, and usually that is on a placemat, my food is not on the table. Now if my food falls on the table, I don't pick it up and eat it.

Well honestly, my ****** is not touching the seat, so I don't worry about the toilet seat...if it looks like it has been sprayed with urine, I use TP to wipe it off, other than that, I sit and don't worry (I'm living dangerously! :rotfl:)

I think you are just fine. People are slobs when they eat, they cough and sneeze all over everything, use the restroom/don't wash/ then sit and finish their meal. I almost always carry the wet ones pop-up wipes and do not feel even the teensyist bit ashamed when I clean the table. I know fast food & chains aren't fancy but would it KILL them to wash the table between customers? If they don't clean then they need to deal with the embarrassment of me doing it.

I'm with you. Most people at my work are such germaphobes and they are constantly wiping things down. They are also always sick. I'm rarely get sick.

I am not sure if I am normal or not....I don't like germs, but I don't always like the things that kill germs. I would send back dirty silverware and if my son was eating directly off of a public table I would wipe it off...but I am like PP's I will sleep on a comforter, walk barefoot in a hotel room and I have never cleaned a remote at a hotel....

That sounds like my kind of normal, but I do realize that not everyone views it that way! I wipe the tables because all our hands will touch the table at some point, and both my kids will sometimes just put their food randomly on the table :confused3 (esp. ds who is 2). I can't stand public restrooms, and will try to avoid them at all costs! We have a travel potty in the car for dd, especially since she's so skinny that the toilets in public restrooms are way too big for her. If I do have to use a restroom while out and about, I definitely use something to open the door with - I cringe to think how many people don't wash their hands after using the bathroom and then open the door. Of course, I really am totally paranoid about germs.

I don't usually clean off the table, but if the only one left is obv. dirty, I will. I do usually spread out a clean napkin like a placemat, though. I wash my hands well and try not to touch the doorknob on the way out of the bathroom (all those people who don't wash their hands! lol) but other than that I don't make a big deal of it, no lysol, so scrubbing, I even sleep under the hotel comforter :)

I am pretty much exactly like this (and very rarely sick myself. The kids had a rough year our first year in Germany--lots of new germs I guess, but otherwise have been very healthy as well. They has several years running in which the doctor ONLY saw them for well checks and one broken arm:thumbsup2).

Don't know where I've read or seen this before but I heard that people who are always walking around with hand sanitizer all the time or cleaning this/that before they touch things or are constantly cleaning things up before touching them USUALLY get sick more than people who just go about their day without worrying about germs and stuff.

I guess for the germaphobe type people, since they're hardly around that many germs, their immune systems weaken or something like that. So when they DO come in contact with germs, they get really sick. While, on the other hand, people who don't bother washing everything in sight and just go about their day have a better immune system and don't get sick as often or as bad. Makes sense to me.

I'm one of those people who don't care about germs as much. And I drive a school bus, so I'm in contact with over 100 kids a day and I RARELY get sick. Yeah, I wash my hands after using the bathroom but I don't fret over much else.

I use the same hygenic precautions my mother taught me as a child and not a whole lot more.
I don't wipe down tables unless they look dirty, I don't carry lysol or wipes (no baby). But I do wash my hands reguarly, use tp or seat covers in the bathroom, and I do avoid bathroom door handles on the way out if possible.
Seems to work for me. But I started working with the public for the first time two years ago and I will say I have been sicker in the last two years than ever before. Thankfully it seems to have slacked off in the last few months.
I do keep wipes at my desk during flu season and if someone appears visibly sick I will wipe down the pens/clipboards and anything else they touched as a courtsey to the next client. No sense in allowing someone else to get sick when I can help prevent it.

I do find this over the top. Why go out to eat if you are so paranoid about germs? It sounds like all these things would really ruin dinner for you so I don't see what is the point. Eat at home where you know everything is spotless and germ free.

Are we twins!?

I do the same things in public but I'm even worse-- for some reason, to make sure my silverware is really clean... I smell it. Yep. I smell my silverware. I'm about 100% positive that even a dirty piece of silverware might not smell but for some reason knowing that the silverware doesn't smell makes me feel better.

Thinking about the cleanliness of dining establishments makes me feel queasy...

EDIT: I realize my behavior isn't normal.. I do tend to have complusions. Silverware just happens to be one of them..

True! Imagine what the kitchen looks like!:scared1:

One reason I am leary of germs, is because, while in college, I took Advance Microbiology course. Our assignment was to take swab samples from various places around campus and then see what we could grow in cultures back in the lab and test others under microscopes. So my team tested the water fountain handle, bathroom door handles, and other places. You would not believe the germs and staph and fecal matter that we found on everyday objects. :sad2: I can't remember the name of one of the things that started to grow in our culture test from the bathroom door handle but our professor said he was shocked to see it growing and destroyed it. He didnt want it being exposed to anyone.

I also want to clear up my original statement...my son doesn't actually eat off the table. But sometimes he will scatter his food and it lands on the table, he also rubs his hands ALL over the table. In my opinion, if I wipe off the table and the wipe comes up DIRTY, that is gross!

I am the same way about the bathroom... I just got some more "dora neat seats" (off amazon) for when we need to use the public restrooms... Using paper towels to open the bathroom doors is not paranoid or over the top. Studies have shown that the handles are covered with fecal matter germs and why on earth would you even bother washing your hands if you're just going to touch the door handle and get them gross again?

I will use a baby wipe or two to wipe down table tops if we're at a place like a food court and we take a table as another family is getting up.

I didnt say we were germaphobic....I just don't like eating on a dirty table, dirty silverware, or sitting on dirty toilets.

Why in the world would you want to do something so gross???? :scared1:
