Are these things in the staterooms?

I just checked out the 'tips' thread that's at the top of the board, and I saw some things suggested to bring that I thought would be in the room.

Is there really no alarm clock in the room? You have to bring your own?

Is there an iron in the room or do you have to request one?

Someone suggested duct tape, but didn't say why... why do you need it?

Thanks :)

There is a clock but didn't check to see if it was alarm or not since we always travel with one and you can get wake up calls if you want. The clock does NOT glow in the dark so I know several folks have brought a clock they could read at night without turning on the light.

There are NO irons in the rooms and you aren't allowed to use an iron in the room. There is an iron and ironing board in each of the laundry rooms.

We didn't take duct tape and didn't need it but I've heard of it used to tape up a hem on a dress, secure broken luggage, etc. I believe some of the packing lists mention other uses.

the clock is not an alarm clock and it does not light up. We brought our own light up clock. However, be sure and have at least one wake-up call. It is Mickey Mouse. My kids LOVED it. Come to think of it, I loved it!

Some mentioned duct tape. I also heard it was to tape the door shut on your closet in rough water. I cannot imagine water too much rougher than ours (8-12 foot waves) and my closet doors didn't open once.

The one thing that I would not have thought about, but now will not cruise without is an over-the-door shoe holder with pockets. We hung that in our bathroom and just about everything went in it. It was a real life saver!

Actually it IS an alarm clock in the room, but does not light up.

We have a travel alarm that I take and you do have the wake up calls too. I like to have my travel clock for the illuminated time so when I wake at night I can see it.

Another alternative is to put the TV on the channel that has the time, weather, etc. I leave the TV on all night for a "night light" effect and put it on that channel so we can see the time there also if necessary.

I have never had a need for duct tape though.

I forgot to pack our travel alarm clock. Not for the alarm.... there's always Mickey for the wake up call.

But just getting ready, looking for the time - it was always the wrist watch.

I'd bring a travel clock, especially if you are used to waking up or always looking at digital clock.

No ironing, because it isn't allowed in the rooms.

There are irons and ironing boards in the laundry room, but, why not be easy on yourself..send anything that is wrinkled out to be pressed, it is 1/2 the price of dry cleaning and everything looks great.

If we need to get up at a certain time..we get a wake up call...we definately don't like the light of an alarm clock glowing all night long.

We took duct tape and didn't need it..won't pack it again.
The curtains were fine, didn't have to tape the closet doors shut, they have velcro to keep them from sliding back and forth. Didn't overstuff my luggage, so didn't need to fix it.

Our closet doors opened and closed one night but I would never duct tape them shut, that stuff leaves some horrible residue when you take it off. It was nothing a few towels on the door track wouldn't stop. The over the door shoe holder was the best idea! It kept the bathroom uncluttered and we always knew where things were.
The thing that made me nuts though was the lack of a light up alarm clock. I would wake up during the night and have to take that tiny deck clock they have there into the bathroom to see what time it was. A light up clock is already the number one thing on my list for the next cruise! That clock they give you does have an alarm but you never know what time it is during the night if you wake up!

The reason an iron is listed is that the ones in the laundry room are communal irons. And some people aren't as careful as they should be, which has resulted in some damaged clothes. If you're pressing your formal dress, some people would rather be sure that the iron is clean. An alternative is to take on of your hand towels with you, and lay it on whatever you're pressing. Any dirt will go on the towel, not your clothes.

Duct tape is just something that some people use for everything. If you break your suitcase or your sandal for instance.

I can vouch for the clock being an alarm clock due to the fact that the people in my stateroom before me had left the alarm switched on....after their departure morning...for about 6am

We always bring duct tape on trips. As others have mentioned, it is wonderful for fixing ripped hems, broken sandals, broken zippers on suitcases, etc. On our most recent cruise i used the duct tape twice ... we had connecting doors with our friends and although we didn't want to have the doors propped open the whole time, we did put a piece of duct tape around each of the locks so they doors would remain unlocked. That worked very well for us. Also, one of my pairs of slacks has a hook and eye closure that was very sharp and kept digging in to me .. i put a small piece of duct tape over the edge to protect my skin.

Duct tape is also sold in "flat pack" rolls for travellers... i think i found mine in the travel section of WalMart.
(on a recent camping trip our friend's zipper on their brand new tent broke ... we duct taped the opening to keep all the bugs out while they slept).

Another "must pack" item is a pair of small scissors ... we used them almost everyday ... cutting tags off new purchases, snipping loose threads, etc.

And my final "must pack" item is a power strip. I really don't know if i could have made do without it on this recent cruise. Electrical outlets are at a premium and are sometimes placed where it is difficult to plug-in the large plugs on hairdryers and such. Add to that all the various battery chargers and i am so glad we had the power strip with us!

Webmaster Penny we are with you. That thing went off and we couldn't figure out what it was at first or where it was. So yes it is an alarm. But we loved to have Mickey call, because he was "glad" we were there. No irons and after seeing all the burn marks on the ironing board, I now know why.

Those who were in mine left it set for 5....AAUGH!!! My first restful night on a 1-month vacation and the alarm goes off at 5 AM!

Please, folks, turn those alarms settings off before leaving the ship! If you plan to get up and out at the crack of dawn the last day, you could spare the next sleeper a heart attack....

Our table mates had this happen last week! She said they were awakened VERY EARLY by that alarm going off the first morning (and they were traveling without their children too, so they were looking forward to sleeping in!)

I suggest that you check your clock the first night to be certain the alarm was not left on.

the alarm on our clock was on too and it went off at 5pm....the people before us must have gotten up at 530am and since the one in our room was not a digital clock there was no way of setting am/pm so luckily it went off at 530pm and we were there to shut it off otherwise it would have went off at 530am too!

I've gone on 4 Disney cruises & always taken a travel iron with me. I have never had to use it, guess I must have packed well, but--if I needed to, I would have used it even though it's against the "rules", I feel that I'm responsible enough to handle it!
:D

JenLynn, what kind of scissors did you bring? I checked with the folks at Disney and they said they xray all the luggage and will pull all scissors, pocket knives, etc out before sending it on to your stateroom!

Thanks,

Kat

I brought a small pair of scissors. The kind that you can get with a travel sewing kit. They are about 2 inches long.

::MickeyMo I always carry a sm pr of sewing scissors in my toiletries bag.Since they don't allow irons in the room, I take a sm can of wrinkle release spray...it really works.Just spray your clothes and give them a tug !Also, may sound silly, but when you're packing...layer your clothes w/ dry cleaner bags.No wrinkles !::MinnieMo

JenLynn, I absolutely love the Power Strip idea... definitely one to remember for next time! We had 2 laptops, 3 digital cameras, 1 digital video camera... and definitely not enough outlets!

What I'm planning on taking that I didn't last time is a power strip, a hairdryer (did not like DCL one), and the over the door
holder. I haven't found the holder yet. Is it a shoe holder or toiletry(sp?) holder? And can you still close the door with it hanging over the door?
