So, are there still bats on the loose at Wilderness Lodge? Has anyone been there recently? We are looking to go in 2012, but I don't know what to do if they are still an issue.

Why are they an issue if they are there? They are great for insect control and contrary to popular belief they do not fly into your hair etc.

There's nothing to do. If you go and see a bat, you look up and say "oh, look, a bat" and then go on with your day. They aren't interested in bothering humans, and as someone said, they are great pest control.

I know the bats were not in the lobby when I was there the end of march. I went on a search mission to find out for all my WL fans. Lol!

sidenote, there were gators in the water at cbr when we were there
2 of them close to 4 feet

We just got back from WL a couple weeks ago - FABULOUS resort by the way. Anyway, we didn't notice any bats and I don't think it would've made a difference to us anyway.

OP, if you're gonna let bats scare you away from the most beautiful resort on property then that's pretty sad.

Bats and alligators just add to the entertainment and Disney magic! And the 1,000s of little lizards that run across the Polynesian Resort's walkways!

You can pretty much count on gators in any body of water in Florida! They've also been in CSR, someone posted some great pics a couple of years ago. In Bay Lake, etc. It's Florida.
Disney relocates them when they get to over 4ft.

And don't forget that Disney is a nature preserve. They won't kill any animal if they can possibly help it. If anything, the animals will be relocated somewhere else on property. Small crocs are left alone, bats that don't harm humans are left alone. Lizards, non venomous snakes, mice, feral cats, whatever - they are left to enjoy their life.

I think what humans need to realize is that most animals won't be on the offensive until we go on the defensive. A bee usually won't sting until we provoke it. Red ants won't attack us until we step on the mound. Animals (and insects, I realized I crossed into that) are generally just really glad to get along with humans.

Didn't see any when I was there at the end of Feb. 2011.

I looked all over so I could take a picture of them for the Dis. Guess WL figured out how to get them out of the building by then.

Bats at WL were seen while we were there last September but I didn't save a picture. The bats help keep the bug population down - although I wished they'd eat the love bugs!! :thumbsup2:rotfl2:

Bats are awesome at insect control. We actually hang bat houses in our trees to encourage them to populate and eat up 1000s of the mosquitos that like to bite my kids.
I wouldn't want one in my resort room though. ;)

I'm not questioning the value of bats for insect control or whatever, but my husband has a real phobia of bats and I don't want my 4yr old to be terrified on her first visit to WDW. I simply am just wanting to find out if they are present at the Lodge on a daily basis. If so, I would need to consider another resort.

Even if they are there now, 2012 is a long time away so they may be gone. There are so many resort choices and since you have concerns, why not just pick another resort which has no bat issues past, present or potentially in the future? Half the fun of a Disney vacation is the planning, IMO, so why spoil it with a niggling concern when you can chose one of the other 22 resorts?
BTW, the 4 yr. old will react based on how adults around her react - if she sees an adult behaving like bats are cool and interesting she'll behave likewise, if she sees an adult react negatively, she will as well. The oversize Disney characters are more likely to frighten her than the critters living around the resorts.

We were there last year (returning June 4th this year, yeah!) and only saw one bat. However, we did see a life guard doing a strange stomping dance. We inquired and he said that he was trying to kill an "Alligator Tick". He said that they are common to Florida, known to bite, and hard to kill. We only saw one other during our stay, but you just may want to keep an eye out. I have cut and pasted a short description, unable to send the link to the photo due to being a new member to this site. They were in no way a nuisance, nor as large as I have seen in photos on the internet. I just chalked it up to my new thing learned for that day.

Giant Water Bugs

Giant Water Bugs are found in freshwater streams and ponds in North America, South America, and East Asia. They are most often referred to as Toe-Biters or, in Florida, Alligator Ticks. Unfortunately, these nasty thigns are every bit as terrifying as those names sound. If they happen to mistake your toe for food, they’ll chomp down and inject it with the same poison they inject into their natural prey—a poison that liquifies tissue. On humans, this has been known to occasionally cause permanent muscle damage if they catch you in just the right spot. But permanent damage or not, it’s painful.

Bats are native to the Disney World property, while I doubt you will see any in the hotels, you will see them on the grounds.

To be honest, any hotel with an atrium that opens to the outside has as much chance as WL to have bats and other critters. You have had many people tell you they saw no bats, even two that were looking for them.

No one can give you an all clear for bats at any resort. So you just have to make a choice for yourself. If the fear of bats is a major concern then go elsewhere.

Over the years I have heard of bats at the CR, the poly and in the Crystal Palace restaurant, so they are not uncommon. Btw I would also avoid the moderates and values since they open right up to the outside.

If you do decide on wl then ask for a room at the far end of one of the wings so you dont have to be near the lobby/artists point area.

I hope this did not sound harsh. It was not meant to be.

Aw now I feel all fluffy:cloud9: Well said. You almost never see animals randomly attacking people unless they're starving/feel threatened/rabid etc. Chances are if you happen to come across a bat (which I would guess might even be sleeping) just leave it be. There's no reason to freak out.

Personally I like bats (suprise). This makes WL that more interesting to me :)
