I know this was discussed on a thread recently, but I didn't pay any attention to it. I'm planning a family trip to Disneyland next summer and so far the plans are to stay at the Disneyland hotel. However, if my finances at the time allow it, I'd like to upgrade to the Grand Californian, but not if there's bed bugs. Do any of you know how many reports there were of this and if the hotel did anything to get rid of the problem? Please let me know! Thanks! :sunny:

I never heard of the stories. My family and another family we know spent last weekend at the GC. We both were very happy with the hotel -- and no bed bugs! Yuck!

Here is the thread regarding it:

As stated in there I stayed very close to the room in question and didn't have any problems. I would say that it is more likely the bites were from bugs in the park and outside in general and not bedbugs.

I stayed there and loved it my entire stay and will be back in a few months to visit again and plan on staying at the GC again.

I'm just back from GCH we were on the fifth floor 5322 and we had no problems. I think if they were actually bed bugs there would be more reports and complaints.

I'll be checking into the GCH this week. If there are any signs of bedbugs, you can be sure I will post about it! I am not worried however, I read the other thread and it didn't sway my decision to stay there.

I heard about this problem not too long ago (not at any one hotel but in general) being a problem. Really creeps me out. Were staying at the Disneyland Hotel, I haven't heard any complaints about this there. But I will still be checking out the room before we get settled. Including the bed frame, mattress, sheets, behind the head board, and probably even the lamp shades. I feel like a weirdo even thinking of doing all that, but I'm telling you after I read enough about this, I wouldn't be able to sleep if I didn't check it all out first! Better safe then sorry I guess!

We stayed there four nights (6-7 though 6-11) and didn't have any problems with bed bugs. We thought the hotel was very clean.

My family and I are going to GC tomorrow and staying for a week. I called the front desk and asked them about the bed bug reports I had seen online. They said that none had been reported in the past 12 months and that if we see anything suspicious to call them right away. My fingers are crossed!

Most nicer hotels, if bed bugs were reported, would do a thorough inspection of the room and fumigation (and if they found bugs, replacement of mattress and bedding), before letting new guests occupy the room, to prevent the spread. I wouldn't worry about it too much. :)

Keep in mind that even the best, most expensive hotels in the world can get bedbugs, through no fault of their own. They are usually brought in by guests in luggage after they've been somewhere with an infestation. No one, include a housekeeper, will even know they're there until they start biting and making themselves known.

The best defense is vigilance. Before bringing your luggage into the room, check the beds. The bugs like to hang out in the mattress seams until food comes (that would be us!). Pull up all coverings at the foot of the beds until you can directly see the mattress. Look around the seams for black or red dots. If you don't find any, spot check other areas of the beds as well. I've also heard about them being in drawers where someone might have stored infested clothing. It is recommended that you not use hotel room drawers for your clothes. If you absolutely have to, check them carefully for bugs and cleanliness before storing your clothes. I prefer to live out of my suitcase, and hang up anything that wrinkles easily. You can also spot-check the edges of the carpet, especially in the dark closet areas for bugs. Don't bring your luggage in until you've looked around. If you notice anything suspicious, notify the manager right away. It's best to ask someone to come to the room so you can show them what you've found. Ask for another room away from that one.

I wouldn't necessarily fault or avoid any hotel that's had bedbug reports. I would, however, avoid a hotel where management does not respond appropriately. I've seen reviews where a guest reported bedbugs and the management either denied the problem or was indifferent. On the other hand, I've seen reports where management took it very seriously, assigned the guest another room, and stopped renting the infested room until pest control was called and it had been cleared. That's the kind of response that would make me consider staying at the hotel again (all other things being satisfactory).

THIS!!

Both this thread and the thread linked to in the third post are from 2006. I'm not a bedbug expert, but I think most bugs have a fairly short lifespan, so I don't think you need to worry about a possible bedbug issue that happened 9 years ago :)

If you're still nervous, I would just Google some info on what bed bugs look like and how to inspect a hotel room for them, and then do that in your GCH room as soon as you get there. If there are any problems, go down to the front desk right away and I'm sure they'll get it taken care of.

Exactly what Luv Bunnies said. Bed bugs do not respect the star rating of any hotel. And they occur all over the world. They can pop up anywhere, brought in by infested luggage that might have become infested in the baggage hold of an airplane. Most reputable hotels are very prompt at jumping on any reports of bed bugs, in order to prevent their spread. I have no reason to think a Disney Resort would be anything other than diligent with this.

We have stayed at the GCH numerous times and have never had a problem. Of course, any hotel CAN have them, but we have never seen any nor had any issue.

I do have a daughter than can get bug bites pretty much any where at any time and has an extreme reaction. She'll get bites on her feet when she has shoes and socks on. She'll get bites at home in the middle of winter. It doesn't matter where we are, what season, home or away, she will get random bug bites. Maybe we all do and she just reacts strongly to them, who knows?!?! So when I read reports of people getting bites in weird places, I think of my daughter and how freaked out I'd get if I thought there were bed bugs every time she got a bite.

All that being said, I'm super cautious about cleanliness and hotel rooms.

Here is a bedbug inspection guide from the California Dept of Public Health, which contains some helpful information and pictures:

http://www.cdph.ca.gov/HealthInfo/discond/Documents/Bedbugpresentation2006.pdf

Even though it doesn't sound like there is a verified recent outbreak at GCH, as another poster pointed out, bedbugs can easily hitch a ride in a guest's suitcase at any time, so it's probably not a bad idea to check out your room any time you stay in a hotel, Disney or otherwise!

I think it is a little alarmist and unfair to the hotel to post a thread titled "Bed bugs at grand californian". It makes people think there are reports of current bed bugs. Any hotel can get them, but I would expect the disney hotels to be the most on top of removing them if any are ever found. There is a bedbug registry site but no way to tell how accurate reports are.

Exactly. What purpose does it serve to title a thread like this? Does OP really think some hotels have them absolutely and some don't? The best hotel room in the world can get them tomorrow, and they don't come from the hotel's lack of cleanliness. They come from the previous guest.

This thread originated 9 years ago. A lot can happen in 9 years. I would imagine that Disney took care of any bed bug issue appropriately back in 2009 when it occurred and would probably appropriately address any subsequent issues that any guests might have reported.

I didn't realize this was a 2006 thread that just got bumped today. I guess we should all just let it go back to sleep...

Rest assured if Disney had confirmation of bedbugs in one of their rooms they would handle it quickly and take care of their guests as well. No matter where you stay in any hotel it is always a good idea to check mattresses, behind headboards, etc just to be safe.
