I was just on a web site www.ghosthound.com and saw a few haunted places I never knew about in my small community! Anything close to you?

I live pretty near Vicksburg where anyone who has studied the Civil War knows there was a HUGE battle. They have a military park there that is said to be haunted and also 2 old plantation type homes that are said to be haunted. One of them is simply gorgeous and is now a bed and breakfast. They also have a large chapel where people get married. I have begged my DH to go there with me and spend the weekend. I think it would be neat plus I love history. Hes a scardy cat though and won't go with me
Beauty, we are Civil War buffs and know most of the battles. Would love to head down that way in our RV
I don't know why the battlefields woudn't be haunted So much death in such a short time

I just found out about a place nearby that is supposed to include a haunted bridge and wooded area. I guess that I know where I'll be tomorrow!
I thought that I heard that most of the Amityville story turned out to be false? I still wonder why the killings happened all of those years ago though.

The area I am from is among the oldest settled areas in the country.
Not only has the Revolutionary War been fought in this area, but several "wars" with the American Indians - including the King Phillip War.
So this area is quite haunted. I even used to live in a haunted house.

As I recall, there really was a pretty gruesome muder that occured in the house in Amityville. . . but the family that lived there after that and wrote the book the movie was based on, did later admit that they made the whole "haunted" thing up around their kitchen table as a scheme to make money. .
Beth, I don't know about the civil war sites there in Vicksburg being haunted, but I'm pretty sure there are some "evil spirits" inhabitating the AmeriStar. . I've never been able to win a dime in that place!!!!

I live in an area of Richmond that is supposed to be extremely haunted. The college I go to even had a tour for Parents' Weekend (at least one year) that was the Ghosts of Richmond.

Norah had her prom in a local haunted mansion.
The house I grew up in was haunted. My parents never mentioned anything to me or my siblings about it and we all had experiences on our own that confirmed to everyone that we were right.
When my parents would be getting ready in the early morning, they could hear someone rocking in the attic. We could also smell eggs cooking with onions and peppers on many mornings. I guess that was the ghost's favorite meal.
When I first learned of the ghost, I had gotten up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. I didn't turn on any lights and there was an apparition (sp?) sitting on a toy box in the Thinker's position. It was almost as if he was listening in on my parents. Their door was closed.
One of my sisters was in my parents bedroom to get something one day and she looked at the wall and there was an image of a young boy in "old-fashioned" clothes. He had on knickers and suspenders. When she turned away to call for my Mom, it was gone.
One night, my brother was home alone. This was the only time that our ghost had tried to scare someone. He was watching TV and heard chains rattling in the front living room. Later that night, he went to the cellarway to get some soda. When he pushed at the cellar door, it pushed back. He pushed harder and it opened and there were no brooms or anything that had fallen that would have blocked the door from opening. He stepped down onto the stairs. They were open-backed stairs since it was an unfinished basement. Something grabbed at his ankle. Needless to say, he didn't get his soda and he ran up the stairs and locked the door.
Other times, when we'd come home, we'd open the door and hear someone calling for "Mommy." It would usually be in one of our voices, but no one was home. There were many occasions that more than one of us heard the same thing.
We talked casually with some people about tracing the spirit so it could rest in peace. We were told that if someone dies before it is their time in an unusual manner... a drowning, a murder, etc., his spirit can come back to haunt.
Another interesting thing about the house was that from the late 40's to the mid-60's when my parents bought the house, no one had lived in the house for longer than 2-years. Maybe the ghost was more frightening to them? My Mom always attributed that to the next door neighbor because she wasn't very nice.
I decided to research the families who had lived in the house. It turns out that during the 40s, the family living there had a child who died very young. My parents knew the family, so that's how we learned of the child's death.
Since the ghost appeared in the image of a child and the voice that we heard always called for "Mommy," we assume that is the spirit that is in the house. The fact that it tried to scare my brother, we have decided was a child's mischief-making.
When we moved from that house, we actually said, out loud, in the living room, that we'd like the ghost to follow us to the new house. It didn't.

Monongalia County - West Run Road:
Cemetery and woods are believed to be haunted. If you travel the road late at night you will notice that the hundred crosses sitting on the hill are illuminated and eerie. In fact, local witches have their Sabbaths up on this hill on their holy days.

Girls on the all female wing of Boreman Hall regularly have encounters with the supernatural. Every night around 1:30am the girls hear noises in the attic and occasionally things will be knocked off desks. On one encounter a girl saw an apparition of an old lady in the bathroom who then walked through the wall. More recently, a member of Boreman Hall's cleaning staff saw odd shadows and heard noises around a corner and then saw nothing, it scared her so bad she screamed loud enough to wake up most of the floor.
Morgantown - Beta Theta Pi-Beta Psi Chapter:
Residents of the fraternity have reported clanging of chains in a lower room of the house. It is believed to be the ghost of the late butler of the house in the 1940s.
Morgantown - Cheat Lake:
In the early 1970's, two college students were hitch-hiking for a ride back to their dorms on Evansdale Campus. Apparently, they were picked up in the downtown area and not found again for months. Their decapitated bodies were later discovered on route 73 heading south towards Fairmont, but the heads were no where to be found. The murderer and the case still remain a mystery today. It is believed however, that the two girls roam the woods near the lake, searching for their heads. Many car accidents have been reported on Route 857 North on Dead Man's Curve, because of blurry apparitions of two girls running back and forth through the woods, distracting late night traffic.
Morgantown - Morgantown Public Library:
The public library employees have reported a ghost. Especially when working late in the evening.
And then, of course, a few hours southwest of me is the Pt. Pleasant, WV. Home of the Mothman.
