Are there alot of bugs at WDW?

  • Yes, everywhere.

  • Some, but no worse than outside your average mid-western/north-eastern home.

  • Only a few.

  • The only bugs I seen were in 'It's Tough To Be A bug!', Disney does a great job fumigating.

  • Only in specific parks or resorts.

  • I am a bug!

we've even camped there and since i share your fear, am always on the look out( nothing worse than having one drop down just while you are sitting on the pot and can't escape!) and i really have never seen them anywhere. once we did get into a "skirmish" with a palmetto bug but that was outside

someone posted about ttbab and it does have (spoiler ahead )

very big but very fake looking spiders that come down from the ceiling but don't touch you( for some reason that matters to me :lmao: ) and also it feels like cockroaches are running past you in the end but just be prepared for it and you should be ok. You could shut your eyes for the spider part and pick up your legs when they tell the roaches to leave and i don't think you'd feel it ( maybe you still would, that's just a guess since i think it's something under the front of the seat) it's pretty much the same sensation as the mouse thing at honey i shrunk the audience.

i remember we went one year and the love bugs ?? were everywhere it was really disgusting. i think it was in the spring or fall when we went and they were so bad. it was their mating season and they were "attached" to each other flying around everywhere. they would get in your hair and clothes, they even ended up in the diaper bag. you could see them in all the pictures we took that trip. they won't bite or harm you, they are just really annoying. i am terrified of bugs too, but after a few days i got used to it and it didn't bother me so much anymore.

I've been there a few time druing the mating season, but I can't seem to remember exactly when it was. But is was pretty bad, they were everywhere. I remember we were at CBR and we couldn't eat breakfast outside because the tables and chairs were literally covered in bugs. It was like something you would see in a bad sci-fi movie.

But other than that, bugs are never really any issue.

Love bugs around in the fall, Sept.

and I didn't see any bugs. We did see a lot of those little lizard things, which are just adorably, by the way!! :)

Ah well, I am resassured now that I won't get swarmed with mosquitos and spiders when I go outside. That's how it is up here during the wet summers.

But the amount of lizards do concern me...... :teeth:

P.S. Isn't a 'Palmetto Bug' a cockroach?

When we went in September of 2000 we flew down to West Palm Beach, rented a car and drove up (about 2 hours). The car was COVERED in love bugs. We stayed at All Star Movies and they were everywhere - you had to be careful when you opened the door or you would leave some in your room. By the end of the week it got better. So anyway, I believe the love bug problem is later summer/early fall.

I've been many times, and never had a real problem with insects. However, this February, the Muppets fountain (right in front of the door to the 3-D movie and across from Pizza Planet at MGM ) was swarming with bees. Hundreds of 'em. I have never before seen anything like it at Disney. I guess they were just thirsty, but man, I didn't like standing next to that waiting to get in to see the Muppets, even for the 3 minutes or so we were in line.

I am arachnophobic also and I've only ever had one bad incident at WDW. We visited Tom Sawyer's Island in MK and to my horror I discovered that there were big spiders with webs in and between the trees. I was terrified when on the trails and just sort of ran with my head down hoping nothing dropped on me. This was in September 2002. It probably wasn't a normal thing, or I blew it out of proportion in my head, or something, but I know that I would want to know if someone experienced something like that. I'm too scared to go back to Tom Sawyer's Island to see if it was really as bad as I remember.

Ironically, this morning I noticed a spider on the ceiling in the bathroom while showering. Let me tell you it ruined my normally relaxing shower. I had to keep one eye glued to it the entire time in case it decided to scuttle in the shower stall over top of my head. I about broke my neck tripping over the toilet so I wouldn't have to walk underneath it on my way to get the spider spray. Those darn irrational fears!!! :guilty:

I'm absolutely terrified of spiders and I've never noticed any. I've heard stories about people seeing large ones in the trees but I've never seen them. . . never actively looked for them either, LOL. But at least they're nowhere obvious.

There are the infamous lovebugs - but that's just a couple weeks late August/September. They're pretty annoying, but harmless.

Oh, and if you notice a lot of wasps around - they probably aren't wasps. They have a similar build and are more black than that brownish color of a wasp, but according to my manager when I was on the CP (and they were everywhere near our store) Disney puts them there because they're very vicious to real wasps and bees, but harmless to us. They have no stingers and they don't attack people. They just attack other bugs. Instead of pesticides - Disney's natural way of taking care of pests like the ladybug releases.

Are there a lot of bugs? Not really, and sometimes yes. On most of my trips, I've seen very few bugs. A couple of dead palmetto bugs and one live one last trip (crossing a sidewalk at my resort, far from rooms). However, on one trip in May of 2003 I had a big problem with yellow flies. They're a relative of the deer fly and they seem to like three things: shade, water, and biting people's legs and feet. I first noticed them at the fountain outside of the Japanese counter service restaurant in Epcot, but saw them on an exploration trail in the Animal Kingdom, as well. At Epcot, I was wearing sandals and got bites on the top, sides, and bottom of my feet, as well as my ankles and calves. I had a severe reaction to the bites. This is why I always pack hydrocortisone cream in my park pack now. And if I even get a peep at a yellow fly, I skedaddle right out of the area!

Good point. In many parts of Florida, the terms are used interchangeably. Most natives in my area (SW Fla), however, use the term palmetto bug to differentiate between the common roach and the much more scary looking "giant water bug", which is bigger than a roach, more prone to flying around, and which has pincers. Now, I've heard several people say these things can be aggressive and cause a nasty bite, but in my experience they're just dumb bugs that would just as happily bash their brains out against a light fixture than get mad at anyone. Fun fact: in some parts of the state the giant water bug a/k/a palmetto bug is also called an "alligator tick", and up north they're called "toebiters" because they sometimes pinch the toes of those who might step on them while wading around in lakes.

Is anyone's skin crawling yet?

No, however a friend of mine just went in March and actually saw a snake in MK. It was right around the Story Time with Belle area.
I's rather see bugs than snakes!!!!

one yr we camped at FW and when we left and took down our friend's tent there was a beautiful blue snake, flatter than a pancake, right under where one of the girls slept...I know they used to ask you to tell them if you saw a snake at FW..

the only time i remember them talking about spraying was once when we were there during an encephalitis out break...they canceled outdoor nighttime things and sprayed ...truthfully the snake, frogs, lizards and yes even spiders probably help keep the bugs in check. ( keep repeating...they are our friends, they are our friends)

I'm glad I'm not the only one freaked out by ITTBAB. . . I didn't even see the spiders and I won't go back. Someone had warned me that, being afraid of spiders, to be VERY cautious when the big tarantula came onscreen. They didn't want to spoil it for me, but didn't want me to be caught off guard. So that movie comes on with the giant tarantula and I'm peeking through my fingers thinking, "ok, that's not too bad." But I'm still twitchy, LOL. I hear people screaming, and close my eyes tight and my head is literally on my mom's knees with my hands covering my head and her her hands covering my hands and she's laughing her butt off and all I can hear is her shouting, "This is definitely not a show for you! There are spiders coming down from the ceiling!" through belly laughs. She let me know when it was "safe" - all I could hear were people screaming and/or laughing. The little kids handled it better than I did.

To this day I've never been back to that one (I'm 28, LMAO)

Maybe, but her delivery makes me think she's referring to something even more unpalatable than a mere reptile. . . .
