Are the animals happy at AKL?

Call me crazy but I think of these kind of things. Our first visit, we saw Zebras running and playing and a real sense of comradely with the animals. We were on Arusha. Our second visit, the males on the Uzima Savannah our room overlooked kept sniffing and going over by the fence because the CM said the females were over there. This happened almost our entire visit. They would roam a tiny bit than go right over to the fence. Now, I know we couldn't see the entire Savannah from our room because we were 2nd floor, but am crazy for even thinking about this? Yes, I know that males are crazy about females and vice versa but does anyone get what I'm saying? I know they have to keep the females and males seperate as they have the three females pregnant right now, but it was almost if the males had this sense of longing and they couldn't go over there. I know WHY LOL but it made me a bit sad nonetheless.

This is Miles the giraffe, who was being kept on one savannah with the females they wanted him to breed with.

He was more interested in the females in the next savannah who wanted nothing to do with him, so he spends all his time hanging out by the fence.

Didn't occur to me to feel sorry for Miles, he had females available to him but they weren't the ones he was interested in. He thought the grass was greener on the next savannah. Actually it was sort of funny when the females would walk up to the fence and then snub him.

If it makes you feel better just remember that these animals grew up in a "zoo" setting or at AKL/AK so they really don't know any different. And AKL is probably a pretty nice place to live compared to other zoos (AK is nahtazu)

It's not like these animals were running wild in Africa and someone captured them and now they are sad-- know what I mean?

That made me laugh. DH missed the memo that the AK is Nahtazu! He told our guide on the Sunrise Safari that the AK was an awesome zoo. You should have seen the look on the guides face, he very politely said that the AK is much more than a zoo.

Amy, I totally get what you're saying. On the other hand, I bet all their buddies back on the real savannah are so envious that they get to live at Disney World!

Aloha,

This post is a classic. It brought the house down with my family as we are currently staying at the AKL. We have a direct view of the Arusha Savanna and enjoyed a great Sunrise Safari this AM.

For animal lovers it's very tough to stay at the AKL and attend parks. The pull to remain at the AKL and enjoy the animals is immense. I spent the afternoon on the lanai with my laptop enjoying the great view.

Lord willing our next WDW trip will feature only down time at AKL.

Well, considering they're getting the DDP with a CM discount, it's still a pretty good deal.
