Are rooms assigned 5 days in advance?
I need to make a request and was planning on doing it the day before/ at check in.
Is it best to call before it becomes 5 days?

I’m not sure of the 5 day before thing. We’ve made reservations the day before check in and still been able to get room requests. You can always try at the front desk. Especially if there is still availability left for your check in date. We’ve routinely been able to change rooms at the desk when our room isn’t ready when we arrive at the resort. You’re safer sending a fax directly to the resort for a specific request as there is no way to call a resort directly. Even when you’re in your room and you push the front desk button, the call goes to one of the 2 call centers in Florida 99 times out of 100.

As far as the request, if it is that important to you, I would first see if what you want can be requested as part of online check in. If it can, do so. If not, I would call now and have the request added to your booking. Whichever one of these you have done, once you receive your room number on check in day, you can still request a change if they did not meet your request. They may not be able to meet it, but at least you will have the best chance. There is no advantage to waiting until five days out vs. five months out. In fact, getting the request in as early as possible may help in the event they start playing room Tetris earlier than expected.

The best advice I can give you is to keep your requests as simple as possible. I rarely make any request other than top floor or close transportation, depending on the resort. So far, I have not been disappointed.

If you booked for cash, just call Disney Reservation Center and add your request to your reservation. If you booked on your own DVC points, contact MS to add your request. If you booked on someone else's DVC points, they will need to add the request for you.
