Are Ouija Boards harmless fun or something more sinister?

Love your reply Mosmom!!! Seriously though, it is my understanding that you can make your own type of board or message center or whatever. It could just have "yes" or "no" on it. Also, when you are doing the board you are supposed to be totally concentrating on your question.

OK, so what if you're trying to contact someone who is Spanish?

So what makes these "boards" work? Why does it have to be some sort of "board"? Why can't you just ask the dead a question? I don't get it and I don't buy it.

Most people lack the ability to trust their own communications, therefore an intercessory is used. Whether it be a psychic(medium), cards, stones, boards, palms, etc. You can just ask the dead a question. Anyone can learn to do so, some people have a fine tuned ability to do so and some people need a tool. It does not have to be a board. It can be anything.

Write "si" and "no" on the board. Just kidding-you know, I never thought about that. What if it is a spirit that speaks a different language?

Okay, now I'm picking myself up off the floor. Thanks for the laugh :)

Ouiji boards simply take money out of hard working honest mediums pockets. It is a shame really. Maybe I can change your mind about the spirit world Beth...

You love Papa John's breadsticks, you have a boot fetish, and your poor poor DH seems to have an incontinence problem. Anything ring a bell? PS - Get those holiday cards sent!

To answer your question about foreign language....spirits follow the universal language rule. English is spoken by all dead. Just like aliens on TV.

Best wishes to all

I wasn't even sure if they still made Ouija boards. My DS had asked about one a few months ago, wanted to know if I would buy him one. My friends and I played with one a few times when we were kids, nothing ever happened though. When I was a teenager a friend had one that we used and a girl that was there was totally freaked out by it. She went to her room and shut the door, but a few minutes later she came running out of the room swearing that a picture FLEW off the wall and landed on her bed. Do I believe what she said, don't know. To me it was just always good fun but I don't know if I'd use one of them now lol.

I don't know about other religions but I was raised Roman Catholic and was always taught that to use a Ouiji board was to open a door for Satan to enter. My general response was for many years "Sure, that sounds very plausable [not], but I personally just was not interested in using one.
When my daughter was about 12 she and a girl her same age on our street bought one without telling me & DW or the other girl's parents [very, very strict Catholics of spanish descent]. They hid the board in the other girls garage and sneeked it out when they could. They did this for a few weeks until they started to get some very strange messages and warnings [some of which started to happen]. Our daughter and her freind came to me and confessed what they had been doing and what was happening. I questioned them very carefully and determined that it did appear that something was happening that was quite scarey. I contacted my Pastor and was told to pack the whole thing up and bring it to the rectory and they would dispose of it. I brought it right down and was promised that it would disposed of promptly and properly. I still do not believe that a Ouiji board in and of itself is evil BUT as a symbol of evil and a possible access for evil into our everyday life it should be avoided.

The boards have nothing to do with religion though peoples opinions certainly do.

They DO work and I will never use one again.

When I was a teen, my cousins and I played with one. We were in the basement and the room had no windows and the door closed. Suddenly there was this wind that flew through the room moving things and blowing papers around. There was no reason for it but it DID happen. And then the suond of a moan out of nowhere and right near all of us (it didn't come from any of us. They were all sitting in front of me and it was obvious). It scared the daylights out of me. We called up a ghost. No idea who but I will never touch one again.

My thoughts? I believe in them, so I stay away.

OT, but when Treesinger mentioned the pen it made me think of the ol' thread, needle, pencil trick for determining the sex of a baby. I know it isn't contacting the dead but what makes that work? I've never been wrong.

Some interesting reading:

Simple. It doesn't work. It's an Old Wives' Tale.

Well, if it is an old wives tale, how come it has never been wrong for me? LOL

I once got a Slinky as a kid and was thoroughly disgusted to learn it did NOT "go down stairs and creep round chairs" as the ad claimed it did. Ok, well, maybe it did a LITTLE, but only if you gave it a nudge QUOTE]

The ad stated

"What walks down stairs, alone or in pairs, and makes a slinkity sound? "
everyone knows its slinky!!

Sorry it didnt live up to your expectations....would have been fun watching a child waiting for the thing to creep around a chair though lol

Even back in the 1880s, the planchette was being sold as a novelty item and parlor game. The Ouija board was in the same vein--an important point. The board didn't originate with swamis, emanate from the mysterious East, or anything like that. It was invented and marketed by American businessmen hoping to make a buck.

Case closed :earboy2:

These stories are freaking me out! Just in case I say NO.

The only proof you need is to ask the board a question that no one could possibly know and to have someone not participating write the answers down. I've done this and it has worked every time. Case closed.

I have found that asking a question that has a longer answer than a few words does tend to turn unintelligible. Beth, I have to imagine that the writer of that article never tried a ouija board himself. I did notice that he never mentioned asking a question that no one knew the answer to and therefore would be unguessable.

I can't make anyone here believe that this works anymore than I can make you believe in God. But this straight laced Conservative Christian knows that the board works.
