Are older folks sailing?

The vast majority in Canada in ICUs are under 50 and have Delta. Age is no longer the same risk factor perhaps that it was with the original virus. Not being vaccinated and taking risks, seem to be the main risk factors now.

Are seniors cruising even though the CDC says being part of the vulnerable population during covid it's really not safe? What are your thoughts?
I am cruising—in fact, I have 5 cruises booked. Where else can you go where almost 100% of the people are vaccinated, tested negative and have follow up testing? Where else can you go that is constantly disinfected and cleaned? Certainly not the grocery store, shopping, doctor’s office or even visiting family or friends. I feel very safe. I am 69 years old.

We are 80ish and spent a week at Disney World in July, have a DCL cruise and two days at WDW set for next month and two more DCL cruises set for 2022 with possibly a river cruise in the spring. We have our shots, wear masks when we have to and I feel that there is more danger driving a car than from Covid.

Well, if you consider 62 & 63 old, yes, we are sailing. I seem to remember something about vaccines and how there are there to protect us.

My wife and I are in our mid 70's. We have done all the required covod stuff...masks, vaccinations, social distancing etc. We are now going on the 10/9 Fantasy cruise. Concerned? Yes. Afraid? No. it is what it is,
As a pair of 64 year olds we're waiting until cases drop just because we are concerned we will test positive and have to quarantine away from home.

Both 71, both compromised, me worst off with cancer, cruising very soon with a scan immediately upon returning due to indications that cancer is back, :confused3 . Only live once and I don't care. Have the 3 shots, will wear masks when out of cabin.

As a pair of 66 yo's fear of covid is not keeping us from cruising, the vaccination requirement is. We have chosen not to get the vaccine and please don't turn this thread into a pro/con discussion. It is our choice and we continue to travel - Disney World, Branson, MO, Las Vegas. As long as the requirement is there, we'll be vacationing on dry land with no fear of Covid.
I totally agree with you. We have no fear of Covid but do have fear of the experimental vaccine.

I don't know what "older" is for you, but we are 58 and doing a 3 night Nov. 5. This will be our 6th cruise overall but first time to see the decorations. If I was already retired I would schedule more!

I'm still hesitant at 79 but then I love the cruises so I probably will be making a reservation soon.

I'm 65 and wife is 61 and we are going in December. I just got my booster this morning and I'll have my mask ready!

Yes us oldies are sailing 66-71 and sailed on both the Dream and the Fantasy last month. We have 4 seven-night cruises booked for 2022, plus 2 placeholders waiting for the next release
My husband and I have had several cruises cancelled in the last 2 years and we chose to move them and use the extra 25% FCC we got for them so now we have 4 seven-night cruises booked in 2022 just like you do.

57 and 54. Already sailed on 2 Dream cruises in August. Sailing on the 8 night Fantasy next week, and have 3 cruises booked for 2022 so far.

No issues whatsoever with sailing. We felt very safe on the Dream and the low crowds made for a wonderful cruise experience.

Might be seniors but we travel like freshman. Three vacations between now and the end of the year with one being a cruise. However, we did cancel our Rhine River cruise as the itinerary was changed from five countries to one. Too much money to stay in one place for us.

Please don't start. This is how threads get shut down.
A little confused by your post. I am the original poster and stated my opinion. Speicher46 merely agreed with my post/reason. Nothing controversial. Apparently it is okay for one to agree with those who are traveling vaccinated, but not for those not traveling because they are against the vaccine. Neither of us said anything disparaging against those who choose to be vaccinated just as I would hope for the same respect for my/our decision to not be. Out of 37 posts in the thread, my original post and Speicher46 are the only 2 referencing disagreement with traveling vaccinated. I also said nothing negative regarding Disney's decision to require vaccines - they have that right and then their customers make their decision based on their personal beliefs. We made the decision to cancel our 9/18/21 cruise due to the requirement and will decide on our 11/2022 based on the requirements in effect at the time.

You, along with everyone else, is absolutely entitled to their own opinion regarding vaccines. However, this thread was not about vaccines. And yes, you could argue the post I quoted was controversial. But my post has absolutely nothing to do with agreeing or disagreeing to travel vaccinated. It was simply because many other threads have been shut down once it starts leaning into vaccination territory. And now I will stop referencing them, because again, I don't wish for another thread to get shut down unnecessarily.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, I suppose, depending on your perspective) this isn't really accurate, regardless of what the media would have you believe. At least not everywhere. In Ontario, today's data shows 164 hospitalizations in the past two weeks in people 60+, and 139 in those under the age of 60. Of that younger group, 79 are in 40-60 year olds, and it's reasonable to assume that at least half of those are in the 50+ group. (Source) Also, the younger people who do end up in hospital, and especially the ICU, tend to stay longer, because they are saveable. That same dataset shows 16 deaths in the 60+ group over the past two weeks. In the same period, there were 3 deaths in 40-60 year olds, one younger adult, and none under 20.

Vaccines mitigate the risk at any age, but age is absolutely still a major risk factor. The rate of hospitalization (and death) in older people is still much, much higher than younger age groups, even though the vaccination rate in older people is very high, and younger people tend to be much more active in the community.

Which is not to say that I think older people shouldn't cruise. The opposite, actually. IMO we should all live our lives while we still can. Life is short, there is risk in everything, and the protocols that cruise lines have put in place seem to have been very effective so far.
