We just sent in our closing papers on a BWV 300 pt. contract. I requested a copy of the seller's point activity statement prior to sending back the documents.

I was surprised to see how many points weren't used:

1999 -- 108 points expired
2000 -- 101 points expired
2001 -- 375 points expired (75 were banked points)
2002 -- 300 points expired
2003 -- 4 points expired

Made we wonder if the system was explained to them. Does Disney tell new members that its okay to rent out points?

I can't imagine paying the maintenance fees and not using all those points

Seems like a sin to waste points....our DVC guide impressed the need to bank points if we weren't going to use them.
I didn't find out about renting until I happened on this website. (Yes...I lurked and learned!)

Are new members taught how to use their points?

Yes, right here !! I learned everything I know from the helpful people here at the DIS ! :smooth:

:( I feel so sorry for all those precious points. Being wasted like that!

I trust that their new owners will treat them right? :p

Disney will not and can not share information about renting your points. Nor will they be responsible in any form for any renting transaction.

That being said, obviously this member for what ever reason was not able to make good use of the points hence the reason for selling probably.

One never knows what goes on in a person's life and they could have a very good reason for being distracted enough to let that many points expire.

For whatever reason banking seems to be the hardest part of managing points for some. Of course if you never have any to bank then it's not a problem, :)

I promise to cherish each and every one :teeth:

I know when we bought, the system was explained very well to us. Then, the week we closed, our guide called us at home to see if we had any further questions/comments/concerns. I thought that was very nice of her.

Congrats and Welcome Home Jmatias !

To me that pattern look like.

1) Buyer bought too many points to start with (i.e. the first two years he used nearly 2/3rds of his points), but didn't know about renting (a rather obscure thing off this board or ebay).

2) Buyer then spent two years not going to Disney. Maybe they got laid off.....maybe they were ill.....maybe they went to Europe instead.

3) This past year they went back and used a lot of points. But they decided to sell. Maybe the magic had gone stale for them.

Keep in mind that there are people out there for whom $1200 a year in dues isn't a whole lot of money. If they had their dues pulled monthly, they may not even notice it on their budget. I have a club membership like that. We don't use it often enough to get value out of it objectively, but when we do use it, we feel like we value it.

Obviously, when the program started, renting wasn't on the radar screen. It was too new to foresee that this was an option.

We went to a DVC presentation on the Magic not too long ago, and they do mention being able to rent your points to prospective members. I found that to be very interesting since they don't have a mechanism for renting.

It's a shame that those points expired. Obviously, joining DVC wasn't the right choice for them.

Have fun giving those newly acquired points a real workout!:teeth:

Wow! I could never imagine letting even 1 point expire. Those things are like gold to me. If there is not possible way for you to go, heck, give a friend a free trip. I always know of someone somewhere who is going to WDW.

I love members like that one!

Help pay the expenses of my DVC without clogging up the reservations!

We need more members like that!!! :p

jmatias....congratulations on your purchase! :)

I wonder how many people have DVC points like I've had a health club membership. Seemed like a great idea at the time. I become reluctant to cancel it because I know that when I do use it I feel better. Eventually, though, I get off my backend and realize that regardless of how I WANT to use it, I don't actually use it and cancel it. But for procrastinators, DVC is worse, because you actually need to resell the darn thing.

Renting was listed in one of the first paragraphs of my SSR contract. I have not gone back to see if it is in the OKW and BCV contracts also. I forget the exact wording, but it was obvious that it is ok to rent points out.

Wow....I cannot imagine letting ANY points expire. Those people must have had money to burn if they repeatedly did that.....or I guess unfortunate circumstances could have happened.
I feel like I micro-manage my points account on a daily basis.....guess I am just addicted!

Yes, I agree. I'm a new member and my guide was very thorough with all of this information and explanations.

I just added on BWV points a few weeks ago and the person going over the closing paperwork with me pointed out the highlighted area in the contract that says I can rent out points. Maybe they didn't do this before...but it sure is clear now.

Thanks for sharing that info, was not aware Disney would be willing to share info on renting.

I do know for the first time when we called Member Services to book a trip, they asked was it for us or someone else.
