Are "hot pots" really useful?

I'm thinking of buying a hot pot but the only one I can find is in our Sears Catalogue. It's made by Corning and costs $24.99 CDN. Where did you who have one, get yours? Brand? Cost? Any info would help me make a decision. Thanks!

O.K. Now don't laugh, we bought ours at a tag sale. It cost $1.00 and it was practically brand new. I mean they had boiled water in it, how bad is that. I always travel with my hot pot. We make tea, cocoa, soup, instant coffee...It is a real blessing in the mornings and in the evenings when you are getting ready or just want to relax with a cup of tea. ;) :D

I got one at the Shoprite for $9.99 in the fall. If you are thinking of using it for water or spagettiO's its good. We are perpetually late so I like to have something in the room to grab and eat on the run. I don't think I would have paid $25 for it. You can grab at least 4 snack type meals at the snack bar for that.

Thanks for your reply Emme, that's the best deal isn't it! Disneydenise, even adding the 50% Canadian exchange rate onto 9.99 would still make yours cheaper than the one I've seen so far here. Where are the Shoprite stores? Would the US Walmarts carry them? The Walmarts I've looked at around here, do not carry them. What brand are your hotpots? I think I'd like to get one and am just trying to decide whether to wait until we get to the US. :)

I used a hotpot everyday on our last trip to Disney. The water heats up in just a couple of minutes. We used it for instant coffee, instant oatmeal, and instant soups. I also used the hot water to wash the kids cups and DH's coffee cup. I plan on bringing it with us on our next trip also. I bought mine for about $10 at Wal-Mart.

A small coffe pot would work well too.(perculator type) You don't have to put the coffee bin in it to heat the water up.

Don't "flame" me on this---but please be careful when using the hot pot--It just bothers me to see someone using a hot pot in there hotel room.
What if you leave the room and forget to turn it off???---Possibilty your hotel burns down in the meantime--endangering the lives of other vacationers.

Even when we're staying at the Boardwalk in our vacation home that has a full kitchen I'm very careful--I might be cooking supper on the stove or in the oven--but I remember there are other vacationers right next door--and my actions fully put their lives in my hand. I wouldnt want to see the Boardwalk on fire and on the evening news.

I'm not saying don't use a hot pot just Please be very careful!!!--the few dollars you might save are not worth the price of a life.

My hotpot is by Rival, under $10. Often available when they have small appliances on sale(Toaster, iron, etc)any type of discount store. We have used it every trip & my daughter now uses one at college.

Thanks CapeCod53! We have Rival here in Canada so I'm going to keep looking for one up until we leave in March. Otherwise, maybe I'll have better luck in the US, I really don't want to spend a lot for one.

I know that alot of people go to the Walmart on 192. I would wait to purchase it when you get here. With the Canandian dollr exchange I think you will do better here. I stink at math so I hope I am thinking right. They offer a microwave for free at the BC so you may want to see if you can get something for your room like that at the resort you are staying at. I know they have toasters at the food court at the DXL.

for about $6 you can buy a timer to plug in the wall and then plug your hot pot in - set for 1 hour in case you forget to turn it off.....

Thanks Disneydenise for replying. Have you seen them at the 192 Walmart? I was thinking of trying there. If I can get one for about 10.00 US that would be about 15.00 Canadian and your tax is a lot less than ours, which is 15%!!! As far as resort, we are staying offsite this trip in just a standard room, so will not have a microwave etc. This is going to be a rather cheap trip, since we've already gone twice in the last year (DXL) and I'm trying to keep all costs, including food down as much as possible. With having breakfast in the room, I thought eating out for lunch and maybe a snack in the room for supper would help accomplish this.

The comments about fires is well taken. I for one am a fanatic about making sure everything is unplugged, especially in a hotel. Even before leaving my house I make a point of making sure that the stove is off, my curling iron is unplugged etc, everything that should be off is off. My next door neighbours almost burned down their house when they went out and left a pan of hot dogs cooking on the stove, so it's easy to forget if you don't pay attention to what you are doing.
