So, both kids just finished grad school. Both of them needed clinical hours to really benefit from this last semester, but of course did not get them. They did do online discussions, but not really helpful. DS did not even get a refund on his on campus housing - grrr. Well of course neither got the stimulus. If there a next round of stimulus do you think the would be eligible? One has a job starting in July, the other nothing - both in a medical profession. We are trying to help them, but we only have so much ourselves. I imagine a lot of grads are in the same position.

My son will be a senior in the fall. I worry for him that he won’t get the full benefits of an internship, and this may impede his job search. These are hard times. I hope you all do ok in the long run.

I don't think there's going to be a next round of stimulus.

Have you looked into the CARES Act aid to universities? I'm not sure how it applies to graduate schools, if at all, and how it is being handled varies from university to university, but it is providing some relief to some college students who were excluded from the other stimulus measures.

I don’t know if different colleges are handling it different. It was pretty clear that for ds22, he’s only eligible if he was eligible for FA (which he wasn’t) which stinks because he’s done with college and has an apartment and is starting his job in June (fingers crossed). He’s no longer living here, and will start paying back loans. Dd19 will be a sophomore and will be taking out loans for her tuition and rent. She isn’t working right now, and probably not all summer, which she planned on doing to save for her living expenses.

I am thinking since they graduated, they are no longer considered students. I am so annoyed - I do not care what the schools say - for my kids their clinicals were as essential part of their programs and they did not get them. My daughter was in an off campus apt so tough luck for us. Our son however, was on campus. I contacted the school and they said he got online classes, so he must pay for tuition and room. He was sent home by the school - ugh!

At my son's university, all they needed to do was fill out a simple form with some personal info and the amount they were requesting. He is graduating at the end of this semester and as far as I know, was eligible.

One of my kids colleges said it’s for students who were attending this spring. One college said there is an application, the other said no need to fill out an application. Both said it was based of fasfa.

If they didn’t pay or file tax returns then they were not eligible for the stimulus. Did you declare them yourself on your taxes.

I would not expect tuition to be refunded if online instruction was the default, but they should refund a portion of dorm fees.

The big question for qualifying for the stimulus is was the "child" (aged 17-24) claimed as a dependent on your taxes? If yes then no money. If no, then they are eligible for their own stimulus check.

I don't know anything about the stimulus checks mine didn't get them. They did get some parking fees returned and that was about it.

But my daughter missed some last semester senior clinicals, too. (Actually she had gotten 72 hours in before they were cancelled.) The school, however, did a nice job with video learning. Being in the same field, I watched some of the lessons and was suitably impressed with how they did them. (Typical patient situations in which you had to choose right answer before moving forward with lessons, with "instructed learning" feedback just like one would typically have in a clinical setting; varied subjects and number to do based on how many clinical hours already done. And they tacked on a lot of other work, too, that took the place of what they woudl've learned in post-conferences, I'd say.) Don't forget they've had lots of clinical experience prior to this one semester, too (may be different in grad school, idk), and many have already been working in their fields which is even better for learning, IMO.

DD is working in a hospital and will transition jobs, has already applied. DS is also a senior and working in his field, a job he's had for over a year now. He still has an internship to do which has been delayed, but I don't think it will change much when he graduates. Oftentimes networking with people you know yields the best results (then proving yourself on the job for staying power). Have yours get word out to everyone he or she can that they are looking, send our notes and resumes to potential employers, etc. (I was helping a nephew last year put out feelers for internships in his field and was sort of surprised how willing people were to help once asked.) Some might depend on the area but hopefully things should be starting to look up soon. Good luck.

even if they paid and filed their own taxes they were not eligible once they turned 17, assuming their parents claimed them.

The parents also got nothing for them either.

They did file tax returns. I guess my point on the tuition was because they needed actual clinical experience in a hospital and could only get online discussions about what they should do. I contacted the school and they said no refund on housing. So disappointing.

That stinks about housing, my daughter’s room and board was prorated and refunded.

Changing how things are done is not unique to academia. My daughter’s college also changed clinics to online. It’s not ideal, but she completed the courses and the school granted the credit. You are paying for the credits.

If you didn't claim them then they are eligible for the stimulus.

Most schools have taken the approach that as long as they give the students the credit for the course then it counts and no money back. Have to agree that it doesn't mean they got the experience they should have.

I'm a little surprised on the room and board. Around here it seems like most schools are pro-rating it. Off campus, however, is just a loss.

There will be jobs available, they just won't be the jobs you want to do as a college graduate. It's going to be a good lesson in life to put your pride aside and do something less than glamorous because it's what will pay the bills until you can get on your feet.

Correct, if the parents claim them for a tax break, they did not get them stimulus. Is it a public University? I thought most were refunding part of housing. Ours did.

I guess I don't understand what you want the school to do about the clinicals. They were not able to provide them - it wasn't just that they arbitrarily chose to not offer them - they were told by a higher power to shut down their university and they had to do it. Yes - your child may have missed out on some clinical hours, but so did every single student at every university in the United States - the playing field is even.

My oldest just graduated College. Everything in her field is currently closed so she will most likely renew the lease on her current place and spend a year working at wherever she can. It’s stressful, but they are all in the same boat.

You don't get the child tax credit for 17 year olds.
