Are "glow sticks" considered liquid for carry on purposes?

Can I put glow sticks or wands, rather in my carry on? They are a surprise for my girls when we get there so I don't want to check them and wait for ME, but now that I am packing I wonder, are they allowed in my carry on since they are technically liquid inside?

If they are 3 ounces or less you can put them in your 3-1-1 bag. Otherwise, you would need to check them. In my experience the glow sticks are too long to put in the zip lock bag.

Technically liquid? They are liquid and must be in a 311 bag. If they don't fit, they go in checked baggage.

Can they hold their shape outside of the container? If not its a liquid. So if you break the plastic bracelet or whatever the glow stick is, will the stuff inside hold it shape or will it spill all over.

I think you answered your own question...

Thanks, everyone, for your help. I just took myself off guard. I didn't consider them being an issue until I had them in my hand, putting them in my carry on and though, uh oh.

I brought 2 glow sticks ( not bracelets) in my carry on and checked in my luggage the 15 stick tube of glow bracelets. Such a great thing for the dark rides.

I am having the same issue, since I was going to take a bunch with me for my nieces and nephew. I e-mailed the TSA last night for a official decision on whether or not allowed. I will post it here as soon as I hear. It should be in the next 24- 48 hours according to the email I received from them last night confirming that they got my email.

Not really good for a dark ride, the ride is suppose to be dark, not lit up. If used in rides like Pirates, Haunted Mansion, etc, they would be very distracting to any other guests in the area. They are fun for parades, etc.

Why? The answer has already been posted here numerous times. They are a LIQUID and must be in checked baggage or in your 311 bag. I'm not sure why this isn't easily understood.

Probably because the PP is hoping for a different answer. But, they're not going to get it. The contents of the sticks are clearly liquid. You'll either have to check them, or put them in a 3-1-1 bag. You could also consider shipping to your resort, if you are looking to avoid the baggage fee otherwise.

This. Even If you get an "official" email reply it doesn't mean the individual Tsa agent will care. They have contradicted their own written rules and regulations (posted on the Tsa website).

Tell you what cut one open. If it doesn't hold the shape of the container it's a liquid. Not difficult.

Also they are annoying in dark rides. If you kid is afraid of the dark then don't take him or her on a dark ride.

Technically, all containers in your 3-1-1 bag are supposed to be clearly marked with their volume. Since glow sticks aren't marked, they aren't supposed to be in the 3-1-1 bag. Sometimes that rule is enforced and sometimes it isn't.

True, but since 9-11 I have traveled all over the US and Europe with a 311 bag and not once has any security person examined anything in my bag to see if items are marked with the volume. Of course, I'm sure it does happen. I think they just eyeball the bag to see if containers/items meet the rough size requirements.

that's what I was going to say. Even though I've never had a TSA person peer at my baggie that closely, they certainly could do so, and then I'd lose my glowsticks b/c they don't have the ounces/ml marked.

Isn't that the EXACT problem with the small snowglobes that we can't carry-on? That they don't have the ounces marked? (which, by the way, seems like SUCH an easy fix for the manufacturers of the smaller snowglobes)

I check mine. Especially b/c the hard containers don't actually FIT in the 311 bags, if you want to keep them safe in the hard containers.

Agree! They are really annoying to other guests on the dark rides and I wish the CMs would not allow them.
