My daughter told me today that our school has a new policy that Freshman can't go to the Prom! Always before you could go if you were going with a Jr. or Sr. There is a boy that likes her and has mentioned going together. I don't let her go out on dates yet, but I would have let her go to the Prom and school sponsored After-Prom. What is the policy at your school?

The policy is that freshmen and sophomores are allowed to attend if accompanied by a junior or senior.

You have to be a Junior or Senior to attend. Any "guest" must be at least a junior and no older than 21. IDs are checked. :)

There is no such policy at our school, my DS went to the senior prom when he was a freshman. My DD had to get written permission, however, from our principal to attend a Junior Prom in the next town, this came as a requirement from that town. I think all towns are different, obviously, but wonder why yours doesn't allow freshman. Call the principal tomorrow and ask him/her why.

Back in my day I went to prom(with a senoir) as a 9th grader, I also attended Grad Nite(@ Disneyland) with her.

Only Junior & Seniors ....some schools don't allow dates from other schools here without a "note" from their school that they are in "good standing"

I'm not sure ds' school checks ID's. I know only Jr. and Sr. can purchase tickets.

Personally, I think it's a rite of passage and should be reserved for juniors and seniors.

I think I will ask at school why it changed. I know a friend of hers went last year as a Freshman with a Junior.

We do have the policy that if you want to bring someone from another school you have to get a letter from that school stating that the guest is in good standing with his/her school.

I'll feel bad for her if she can't go especially since he will probably ask someone else. Ouch!

I don't know our high school's policy because my DD12 is an 8th grader in middle school.

I don't think I'd want my 9th grader going to the prom with the older kids.
I know I won't allow my DD to go next year if she wants too....it's one thing to go to school with much older kids during the day, but next year she'll only be turning 13 & that is too young (IMO) to be hanging out at night with them.

I did, With a juinors. In our school only juinors can go. I went 3 years. First year with a juinor boy, next year as a juninor, year after with my juinor fieance.

At my high school, freshmen and sophomores were allowed to go as the dates of juniors and seniors, but the upperclassmen had to buy the tickets and school id's were checked at the door, so they had to arrive together.

Last year, they did get more strict about dates from other schools though... which is okay, except that I was then a freshman in college. My ex-boyfriend and I had just broken up and were still friends and he wanted me to go with him, but I had to call the school and get special permission, even though I had been a student there the year before.

I don't know what the policy is here yet but I know in our old town only jr and sr's were allowed to attend and any guests from other towns had to be a jr or sr in high school. WHen I was in high school freshmen were not allowed at all, sophomores could attend with a jr or sr.

I went as a freshmen (back in the day), we also had the policy of only juniors and seniors could buy tickets.....I've never heard of needing a note...but i guess times have changed

I think ours were the same. No freshman at all...sophomores could go with a Jr or Sr.

Dates from other schools had to have info from their schools saying they were a Jr or Sr. They had to have a slip signed and stamped at their school office.

I'm actually not sure we were allowed to attend ANY dances as Freshman. But I know Prom was definately a no-no.

I think we had a seperate Freshman dance.

Back in my day it was strictly a junior prom, but you could bring any date you wanted, whether it be a freshman or someone from another school.

My high school boyfriend went to a school where all grades could attend, and could bring any date they wanted.

I attended 4 proms.

To attend prom you must be a Junior or Senior; or as an invited guest (they don't care who) by a Junior or Senior who goes to that school.

our school is so small that the whole hs gets to go to prom...

Why is this such a bad policy? I think it's quite sensible, actually.
