Hello. I am a recently diagnosed diabetic on a very restricted 1,800 calorie a day diabetic diet. I know how to/what to choose as far as food but are diabetic desserts offered everywhere, or even at all, at WDW restaurants (table service or counter)? We will be on the free DDP when we return and will be at the parks 10 out of our 13 days of vacation, so WDW food is my only option. I know that dessert is not mandatory... it is a choice, however it is something I would like to have occassionally so I thought I would ask of all of you very highly informed "regulars"! Thank you bunches! Kimberly & Family

Kimberly,

Both my DH and I are diabetics...all I have to say is Disney Rocks !!!! When you made your ressies (or if you haven't) let them know you are diabetic. This info follows you as any "Allergy" but your chefs will come out and talk with you about the food. We have never had a problem getting sugar free desserts. In the parks we have had wonderful sugar-free choc mousse, sugar-free cheese cake, great pre-packaged sugar-free brownies, sugar-free ice cream....etc. All the resturants we went to offered us sugar-free subs for most of the sauces. Two things I remember and  endeared two resturants to my DH and I: at O'Hana breakfast they had no sugar-free syrup available (can't remember the reason) but the chef made us some out of this world mango-papaya (sp?) butter for biscuts. There other resturant Spoodles (we are regs here 2 times each trip) the chef made us a natural fruit sauce to be served over the sugar-free cheese cake...

What we typically do is hit Epcot first and go to the Land the food court there has the pre-packaged sugar-free brownies, we will get 6 or 8 to have if we are out and can't locate anyone that serves sugar-free. But again we have never had a problem satisfying our diabetic sweet tooth(s)

Hope this helps....In our Opinion Disney is great with diabetics:woohoo:

Hello.....I am also a diabetic on a diabetic diet.......I have to count all those carbs and then wonder if I have anything left over to eat a dessert.....we just returned a few weeks ago and had a great time. I did indulge in apple strudel at Germany with the vanilla sauce.....I have always looked forward to this and we walked it off...believe me......
ANother board that you may try out is the Disabilities.......they have alot of diabetics and alot of info too........hope this helps......

Thank you for the WONDERFUL information! I am actually printing it now and it is being placed in my WDW "packet". When I make my ADR I will be sure and note that. This is all new to me! Your reply is very helpful! Again I thank you (from the bottom of my heart, and tummy)! :flower3:

I will be sure and check that out. I have been over there looking up mobility/ECV information, however, it did not dawn on me to look there for diabetes related info! Thank you for replying! You guys rock! :thumbsup2

NP :goodvibes

My Dh is a 32+ yr type 1 and I was diagnosised right before our vacation last year (2006) so I can totally relate. You will be pleasantly surprised at the options. We truely look forward to our vacations for this reason. I just wish the "real world" resturants would get a clue.

They have sugar free chocolate mousse in the bakery in Norway in Epcot and it is FABULOUS !!!! :cool1:

I was going to comment on that sugar free mousse in Norway. It was absolutely delicious and so are the no sugar added brownies that come prepackaged. I believe Main Street Bakery has one or two flavors of sugar free ice cream and the Candy shop at the Marketplace has a nice selection of sugar free chocolates. I'm not diabetic but I do eat low carb so I am always on the look out for sugar free treats and Disney is great about providing them!

You can request sugar free items at any ice cream cart and if they don't have any they just call the central supply and it takes about 10 minutes for them to bring it. They will always put together fruit for you or allow you fruit as a CS dessert as well.

I am also a type 1 diabetic. I was diagnosed about 8 years ago and have been on insulin ever since. In those 8 years I've made 9 trips to WDW and I've done everything you can think of to avoid carbs, eat as close to my 60 grams of carbs at a meal when I was on Humilin etc.

The best thing I ever did was to go and get an insulin pump about 4-5 years ago. Now I change my infusion set twice a week and decide when and how many carbs I eat. The pump really gives you the flexibility to live your life. No more eating at predetermined times because of your insulin regimen. No more being restricted to eating a predetermined amount of carbs. No more excusing yourself to the restroom to take a shot. Life changing.

Since I've been on the pump my HbA1c has gone from 8+ to hovering between 6 and 7. OVerall, I take less insulin and have better control. And, did I mention, I decided what, when and how much I eat.

Why do I tell you all this? Simple, my vacations have changed for the better as well. Disney is a different place to me now. I used to dread the menus and search for low carb options. I used to speak with the chefs and have meals specially prepared. Now, I do those things if I want to.... Not because I need to....

Sorry for what probably seems like a lecture but I know what this little pager like device has done for my life. I'm sure it can do it for others as well.

Obviosuly, this only applies to those of us who are insulin dependant. Type 2s are not so lucky as to have this amazing piece of technology.

Off the soap box. Thanks for listening.
