Are chicken feet a southern thing?

OK, I'm a newly transplanted yankee in FL searching for a butcher, and venture into one offering packages of...CHICKEN FEET. What does one do with chicken feet?? Can't imagine they'd even make a good broth...?

Now, I'm not a food snob - I'm adventurous and have tried rabbit, goat, pheasant, venison, wild boar and alligator - some of 'em were darn good! And I grew up with depression era "one-generation-removed" european parents who ate pig's feet, cow tongue and headcheese.

But...chicken feet!?!?!

Denise < --- hoping someone will enlighten me.

Southerners eat chicken feet? Maybe the south is where I would be able to find a can of chicken nipple soup. I have been looking forever!

Nope, I've heard northern chickens have feet too ::yes:: :rotfl:

Maybe they batter them and fry them. Bet they are quite the crunchy snack. :crazy2:

Also came across a Jewish receipe for Chicken Feet soup. :scared1:

Not just southern's, I think their a depression food (that hung on in certain area's) A time when nothing was wasted. I don't see them in the stores anymore. Guess there's still some area's that sell them. As a child I remember seeing these feet boiling in pots, I think they made soup with them, and everyone sat down with a spoon in one hand and a chicken foot in the other hand to gnaw and chomp away at the bone.

I remember there were certain homes where you refused to eat anything, because you didn't know what the ingredients were. You never knew what kind of innard was used to make these dishes.

:scared:

I have lived in the south my whole life and the only place I have ever seen chicken feet is at a Chinese restaurant.

The supermarkets here have them all the time! I'm an unadventurous eater so no way would I eat them (I don't eat innards or bits!), but they are eaten here a lot by the poorer people because they aren't expensive. It makes sense that they would be used in soups and stews - DH would know (he grew up eating all that stuff), but he isn't here right now! I do buy chicken feet sometimes though - for the dog! She loves them!

Me, too!

As a young girl visiting my mamaw(Grandmother) in Kentucky, I remember her boiling them, and then munching on them. They raised a lot of their own food, and wasted nothing. I remember her telling me if you eat chicken feet you get even prettier. She was a beautiful redhead. :)

My Peruvian sister in law and her Mom make the best soup using chicken feet. I think they are in the soup mainly for flavoring the stock, but my neice loves to knaw on the feet themselves after they have been cooking in the pot for hours. Me, I'll just eat the soup and not think about what made it taste so good.

Growing up in Chicago, I've only seen them in Chinese grocery stores. I actually do see them quite often in various smaller grocery stores in New York City. I always thought it was for stock or dim sum. That's my exposure to chicken feet.

Im not sure how far south your talking about but I have lived in Texas my entire life and I dont know anyone who eats chicken feet (though we do play Chickenfoot!) nor I have ever then that item on a menu.
Sounds pretty yucky to me.
