Are changes to reservation ok?

Recently, I heard that making changes to the WDW reservation incurred a penalty. Is this correct? I'm making plans now for our annual January vacation, but if plans change will this be a problem? It will be a room only reservation.

Penalties or change fees come into play with certain changes made after the last date when you can cancel without losing your deposit. That's 5 days before check in for room on!y reservations.

But it depends on the kind of change you want to make. Some changes may require cancelling the existing reservation and booking a new one.

$65~ or around there within 5 days. I changed my resort completely (went from ASMo to Poly Villas) within 2 weeks to go before the trip and no penalties. Easy breezy..

I personally haven't experienced this but what other posters have reported is that Disney no longer is allowing "changes" to existing reservations. They must cancel and rebook the new dates/resort etc. So if you book your original reservation with some type of discount and want to modify it there must still be a room currently avail that is eligible for the desired discount in order to get it. IE if you book 7 days with 25% off rack rate but decide to only go for 4 days there must still be a room avail at the 25% discount in order for you to change your dates and maintain the same discount. Many have called this change a penalty because previously Disney was so flexible about reservation changes but they are not actually charging any fees to cancel/rebook. They are just saying that if you want to change a reservation you cancel and rebook subject to current availability/pricing.
