Are Aleve and Advil different?

It looks like Aleve is naproxen but I don't have a clue what that is.

I know Advil and Motrin are ibuprofen and I know Tylenol is acetaminophen. I assume naproxen is different than the other two?

My son has a fever. He is also the type of kid that seems to have a reaction to everything. He has taken Advil for the past few days and his lips swelled up big time after the last dose. It could have been a reaction to something else but I want to play it safe.

Looks like we get to go to the doctor tomorrow.

Aleve and Advil are both NSAIDs-type medications but are different within that category. You can be allergic to ibuprofen Advil and be okay with Aleve.

I don't think Aleve works as well as a fever reducer but it's better than nothing. Yeah, I wouldn't mess with the Advil again--it can cause a horrific reaction.

It is similar to ibuprofen and acetaminophen. It reduces swelling and I think it is stronger than Advil. I'm not sure though.

aleve is an anti-inflamatory not a fever reducer.

it's a drug you need to take care in using, it can not only cause major stomach issues but can increase the risk of stroke and heart issues (i know, the op is talking about a child using it, but depending on family history it can be a no-no, as is the case with my kids).

naproxen and ibuprofen are both NSAIDS, used for pain, inflammation, and fever. If he had a reaction to ibuprofen I wouldn't give him aleve just in case. he might be fine with it but I would give him acetaminophen instead

Thanks everyone. I went with Tylenol this time. Hopefully that will bring the fever down.

I don't have a clue if the reaction was to the Advil. He swelled up about 30 minutes after taking it. This is a kid that tends to react to many things. I am debating between calling the regular doctor tomorrow (doubt they can do anything since I am guessing it is just a virus) or the allergist since he had a reaction (but they aren't going to be able to tell me what he reacted to). My mystery child!
