I read on here that someone recommends this aquarium and I was wondering if it was "easy" to get to considering its proimity to downtown LA? We are driving from San Diego to Disneyland and thought that might be a nice break before we check into our Disney hotel. Also, does anyone have thoughts/opinions on the shark exhibit? My boys love sharks, but we are also considering the train museum in Balboa Park as they love trains too so it's a BIG decision. :)

I don't know why you mention downtown L.A. regarding a drive from San Diego to Anaheim?
Anyway, Long Beach is a detour on the ride from San Diego to Anaheim, not really on the way. It is definitely a do-able detour, but depends on what time of day you're traveling. For instance , if you could get to Anaheim around 2pm, avoiding traffic...that might be nicer than detouring to the Aquarium and then hitting 5 or 6 pm traffic.
I've heard a lot of people disappointed in the Aquarium, but mostly the complaints seem to be about busy busy days there when they just don't handle the crowds well. So if you can manage a weekday at a not-so-busy time of year, then I would recommend it.

thanks--- I wasn't really sure of its proximity to downtown LA so that's why I asked about the traffic. We are still debating whether to visit this aquarium, or visit Balboa Park in San Diego before we "head" up to annaheim.

I am the one who recommends Aquarium of the Pacific. It is a bit out of the way for some but worth the trip. It is handicapped friendly, mostly indoors, educational, and the staff goes out of its way to help and educte people.

there is a wonderful cafe for food, snacks, and elevators for us waddlebutts who cannot climb the stairs. It is withing a block walk of great restaurants also, maybe two. Just take the 405 to the 110 south MAYBE, it is the western of the two north-south highways, until you get to the exit. Also you can head south from the 405 but that is a bit far.

Mom was 82 and in a wheelchair, diabetes and a picky eater. At times worse than a kid about doing things. I am a waddler with joint, back, and other issues.

I had little trouble and there was so much to see and do like feeding birds, watching animals, and even touching sea life. I was very happy there.

I have been to the Aquarium of The Pacific 4 times. The first time was within the first month after it opened and the line to buy tickets was about an hour long. It was worth it though as we had a very enjoyable time and returned many times. I highly recommend it. Very relaxing atmosphere and I found it easy to get to.

Since we moved to TX it makes it kind of difficult to get there now. ;)

DBF, DBIL and I went on Saturday. I can sum it up in one word: BORING!

To quote DBIL..."It's like a big ssa fish store!"

We ahd $10.00 tickets (regular price is $20.95 I think) and even that was too much. Plus it was packed and that made it hard to see the fish tanks.

Where did you get your $10 tickets? Thanks!

If you show a receipt from a Long Beach Library then you get in half price. DBIL lives in Long Beach so we made him check out a book the day we went and then he just dropepd it in the book drop on the way out the door. The guy who checked us out gave him a funny look and DBIL says "I changed my mind" :rotfl:

My dks LOVED the Aquarium, but I think if they had a choice between that and trains, they would choose the trains.
