They work like regular tickets. What you'll actually get at Customer Relations (when you exchange it for the real thing) is a ticket that looks just like a regular ticket. The only thing different is you get a ticket sleeve to hold it in. I like the hard plastic they use for the AP (like the resort key you get when you check in) better. It would make more sense since if Disney used plastic for APs because people use their APs many times a year per trip because APs wouldn't get dog-eared.

Last year my DH's AP got demagnatized and he had to have it replaced. While there, he was talking to the CM in Guest Relations about the plastic cards compared to the AP's that look like paper (they are actually a Tyvek product). The CM said that they have much more trouble with the plastic cards. Some of the problems he mentioned happening with the plastic cards (but not the others) were the magnetic strip getting scratched and the cards cracking.
So, all in all, he said they have a lot more trouble with the plastic cards.
The CM is right. The CM's do have a lot more problems with the plastic ones than paper. Plus, paper is A LOT easier to replace should something happen.
Yes, it can be tossed -- however an AP is much easier to replace than a MYW ticket as WDW has all your information in their computer. Lose a MYW ticket without the information on the back and you're generally out of luck. Lose an AP ticket without the information on the back and you just give Guest Services the appropriate identification and they can issue you a new AP ticket.
My seasonal pass became demagnitized, possibly by being next to a cell phone, when I tried to enter EPCOT the attendant gave my pass to a CM in a segway and literally within 45 seconds I had another seasonal pass which suits me more, before I had one with cinderellabration on the outside and the replacement was Expedition Everest.I also have annual passes at Universal and the Busch Gardens/Sea World parks and they both have plastic passes but Disney's passes are a hard paper that doesn't tear easily and even if they get wet they should be alright, if they get drenched that's another story, but they are pretty durable.

It means that APs can be printed on standard ticket stock at any guest relations location. Rolls and rolls of standard ticket stock take up significantly less space and are cheaper to produce than plastic ticket stock.
I have had an AP for a few years and it has never been plastic, always tyvek. I haven't ever had a problem with wear or demagnatizing (hope I didn't just jinx myself!). They come in a nice sleeve to keep them separate from other cars and I keep all our pases in it.
OTOH, my dd's had MYW passes for our October trip purchased from the Diseny store and they were plastic. We had more trouble with them, at the turnstyles in the FP machines etc. After the second day we stopped in Guest Relations to have them converted to paper. The CM said we weren't the only ones having trouble. Evidently the tyvek is strong enough to hold up to most anything but has a bit more give so as not to get stuck in the turnstyles or FP machinces.
In addition, like others mentioned its cheaper!
To the OP - yes any type of valid admission works in the FP machine to get a fast pass.
