 Do they check ID's at the gate on AP's or just when purchased? My wife doesn't bring her ID with her on some trips to the park. We have some friends in FL that were planning to go with us.

They only check your ID for an annual or seasonal pass when you buy it, or activate it. You do not need an ID to get in since the ticket has your finger scan on it. I would advise you do bring your ID however. My AP lost its scan from Kali and when I switched parks to EPCOT, I had to show ID.

You need to tell your wife to carry her ID at ALL times. This is a security measure. What if something happens to her and she is unable to provide information to the EMT people. An ID at least gives them a place to start!

Also, if your pass does not work for some reason they will ask for ID. I have had mine not work often and they always ask for my ID.

Carol is absolutely correct, they will ask if the scanner does not work and they also do "spot" checks. It has happened to us.
