It's a tad long since I wrote this to give to our family first and foremost! But a good read (IMHO)!

Cast of Characters: Me, my husband Mike and our daughters Elissa (4) and Kira (21 months).

Destination: 3 nights at Disney World, 4 nights aboard Disney's cruise ship, The Wonder.

THURSDAY, May 27th, 2006 – ARRIVAL DAY
4:30am is way too early to get out of bed, especially when I went to bed at 12:30am, but it was the start of our vacation and being a mom, I don't get much sleep anymore anyway! Mom was at the house to pick us up at 5am… she was borrowing our car for the week. We arrived at the airport, checked in with American Airlines and got our new seat assignments on the outbound flight. They had switched flights a month or so prior and split our seats up. We ended up with Kira and I in an isle and middle seat and Mike and Elissa were behind us. After my daily dose of Starbucks, and getting the girls out of their PJs and into their clothes, we boarded our plane and took off right on schedule. The girls did well, even though the portable DVD player we borrowed from some friends wasn't working. We just had to be more on top of our distraction techniques throughout the flight (like the old days before technological conveniences). Kira became restless and wanted to go back and forth between Mike and I. I was tired after that flight! Our layover was in Dallas, and we boarded soon after we got to the gate. This time Elissa and I were on the 2-seat side and Mike and Kira were across from us. In the window seat next to Kira was a grandmother who befriended Kira. She was our lifesaver. Kira was content "playing" with whom she called "Mimi" the entire way! We couldn't believe both kids were still awake after being up since 5am.
Off the plane, into the double umbrella stroller and Kira was fast asleep. The minute we stepped in the airport, it brought back so many memories of our trip back in '03! We found a little food court and sat down for a bite and nearing the end of our lunch, we noticed a boy covered in chicken pox (I couldn't imagine what else it could be). We quickly left the area (as the kids aren't vaccinated for it yet) and headed downstairs to collect our luggage and get onto Disney's Magical Express (a bus that takes you to your hotel). As usual, the porters were right there insisting to help us find our way (okay, there are signs everywhere and we could've managed a rolling suitcase, a rolling duffle bag, a car seat, a rolling cooler, a backpack, a diaper backpack, a double stroller and two kids…. No prob!). This was the first of many people we'd be tipping on this trip [I believe we spent more in the payout of tips than the whole trip J].
Kira woke up moments before the bus pulled up (perfect timing). We sat down on the bus and the bus driver explained that she had "contraband" onboard: a movie by Warner Bros., not by Disney! She proceeded to play Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the recently released remake of Willy Wonka featuring Johnny Depp. It's PG, but should be PG-13. Johnny Depp's portrayal of Willy Wonka is creepy to say the least. Our entire 45 minute ride to the hotel was spent with more distraction techniques so that Elissa wouldn't watch this disturbing movie. Oh right, our little toddler, Kira who I assumed wouldn't understand what was going on… I looked over and she was nervously twisting her hands as she was watching the scene where Veruca Salt got attacked by squirrels. Swell! We were the last hotel stop, but we had finally made it…. and no nightmares as a result on the entire trip, yeah!
We stepped off the bus into a tropical paradise, Disney's Polynesian Resort! I felt like we were in Hawaii and the smell of gardenias were everywhere. Mike said when we got home we had to plant tons of gardenias in our backyard! We headed to the front desk to check in. They had us in the Tahiti building (a good distance from the lobby and pools, though it was secluded) and on the 3rd floor with a balcony. Being a well educated (sort of) Disney board reader, I knew to ask for a better room. They explained that there were no more rooms available since we were checking in so late (early evening), but one would open up tomorrow on the ground floor in the Samoa building with all remodeled rooms. "Great, we'll take it," I said! Mike was rolling his eyes and making known his disapproval of having to re-pack tomorrow morning and call the bellman to retrieve our luggage to put in storage (more tips) and re-check-in tomorrow afternoon and re-deliver the luggage to our new room (more tips). I didn't think it was that much of a hassle because we had to come back anyway for the girls to take naps.
After a LONG and grumpy 5-10 minute walk with our 6 bags, double stroller, and 2 kids (we decided to save a few dollars and not use bell hop service, go figure), we reached the smoke smelling lobby of our building, went up the elevator and into our room. It was a nice big room with a Polynesian flare with 2 queen beds and a single couch bed, but we noticed there wasn't a crib like we requested in our reservation. Mike called about the crib. He was told by guest services that cribs were a rare commodity and that all of them were being used, but they would see what they could do. We also noticed within minutes that Kira's socks were soaking wet… and then I stepped in it! A puddle (yes, a full blown puddle that splashed when you stomped on it) was right in the middle of our room. There was a smaller one near the balcony door. So Mike was on the phone to guest services again (high maintenance people in room 3001!). I wanted to call our travel agent to expedite some sort of resolution to getting a room change then, but Mike wouldn't have it. He wanted to fix this himself (that's a man for ya!). He had them get some bath mats to put over the puddles and $100 credit for breakfast the next morning and our crib showed up.
By this time it was 6:00pm (but really only 3:00pm), so we decided to head over to Epcot to see if it was a park the kids would enjoy and then we'd go back for a full day later on. We walked to the monorail station (at least that was close by) and headed to Epcot. We talked with another couple onboard who gave us some recommendations for good places to eat for dinner, but then explained that people book reservations months in advance. NO ONE (not our travel agent) told us this or I would've been on top of that during the planning stage. So we headed through Epcot and got to the "worlds." We tried to get into a restaurant that was fully booked. I was directed to use the phone behind them to call the Disney reservation help line. I called and the only place they could get us into was the Biergarten (Beer Garden) Restaurant in the German pavilion at 8:30pm. So we circled the lagoon and arrived at our reserved time (this gives you an idea of how long it takes to get from place to place in this massive place called Disney World (it really is a world of its own). We walked in and everyone was seated at long picnic tables, and in the center of it all were dozens of people dancing around with bull horns on their heads. We had bratwurst, etc and of course a beer. It reminded Mike of festivals in Wisconsin when he was a child. It was a lot of fun and the kids had fun running on the dance floor after dinner. We left there at 9pm just as the nightly firework show, Illuminations, was starting. The kids were not too happy about the fireworks and the park closed at 9pm anyway, so we headed back to the hotel and crashed.

FRIDAY, April 28th, 2006 – MAGIC KINGDOM DAY
We got up and Mike got himself and the kids ready, while I packed up our luggage (didn't take long as we didn't fully unpack) so we could switch rooms later. After the bellman came to take our luggage to storage (another tip), we walked to the main building where we ate breakfast at Kona Café. Yummy, breakfast is my favorite. Then we simply walked out of the main lobby and aboard the monorail to the Magic Kingdom (now that was convenient… the shortest transfer of our whole trip!). It stopped at The Grand Floridian (modeled after the Hotel Del Coronado in our home town of San Diego) and then onto the Magic Kingdom, which looked nearly identical to Disneyland. We had our traditional picture taken outside the gate and then into the park we went.
I felt like we were in LA at Disneyland. Even the weather was mild for Florida… a clear warm day with mild humidity. We headed straight for Fantasyland. We stood in line for Peter Pan ride for about 40 minutes. Then we went on It's a Small World…. the girls really enjoyed that. Then we got on the Merry-Go-Round and then to Mickey's PhilharMagic, a 3D movie featuring Donald Duck. We then rode the Winnie the Pooh ride and then Elissa wanted to go on the Dumbo the flying Elephant. I took her on while Mike took Kira over to a nearby water play area. We all met up together at the Pooh playground and then headed nearby for lunch overlooking the boaters heading into It's a Small World. Elissa had fun waving and making funny faces at them from up above where we were eating. After lunch, we headed over to Toon Town. It was much smaller than Disneyland's, but people told us that some rides were over at MGM Studios (which we never got to on our trip). The girls had a blast in this playground area and then we went thru a shop where we bought them some little Pooh character figurines.
Finally, we headed back to our hotel because Kira was getting tired. Plus, there wasn't that many other rides to go on with the kids in enough time… this weekend happened to be Grad Night, so they were closing the park at 7pm to reopen for high school students for the night (who would've thought at the end of April?!). Anyway, we needed to get our new room. Mike wanted to take the ferryboat back to the hotel for a change of scenery from the monorail, but who knows what would've happened had we taken another mode of transportation!
We got checked in and into our new room. Mike thought it was smaller, but it was renovated, clean smelling, convenient to the pools and the lobby, and on the first floor so the kids could run around outside on the patio and surrounding grass area. As we waited for the bellman to show up with our luggage and housekeeping with another crib, the girls played outside…. until 2 ducks chased them back inside. Elissa slammed shut the sliding door and they had fun looking at 2 ducks up close and personal. However, they left this huge circle of poop on our patio. So we had to call housekeeping for a clean-up. After 3 separate tips for the cleaning of the duck poop, delivery of another crib and yet another delivery of our luggage, we decided to take a dip in the pool. It was breezy and cool. The water was probably about 76 degrees, but the girls had fun in the beach entry pool with their floaties on and Mike even went down the waterslide.
After about an hour we got out and headed back to our room (thank goodness our new room was just steps away or we would have froze). We got dressed, loaded up the stroller and headed back over to Epcot for dinner at the only place we could get in, Restaurant Marrakesh in the Morocco pavilion. Instead of walking to the monorail station at the far end of the Polynesian to take the direct monorail to Epcot, we mistakenly got on the monorail at the lobby of our hotel that goes clockwise thru Grand Floridian, Magic Kingdom, The Contemporary Hotel and then to the station to transfer to the monorail that travels to Epcot. It took an extra half hour, but I suppose it did give Kira a chance to nap in the stroller. We were trying to see if we could see some sites at Epcot (instead of just dinners), but again after the long ordeal of getting anywhere in Disney World and being trapped in a sea of about 100 high school students chanting their cheerleading song, we got to the Morroco place just in time for our 8:00 reservation. Kira woke up just as we were being seated and she was not a happy camper. She was tired and didn't know where she was, with strange music, belly dancers and funny smelling food. I ordered for Mike and we took turns eating in shifts while the other took a screaming, boneless toddler outside for control management. We knew the firework show was coming on at 9pm so thankfully by then she calmed down and we all sat and ate inside away from the loud 15 minute fireworks display. Once again, we made our long trek back to our hotel and crashed for the evening.

SATURDAY, April 29th, 2006 – ANIMAL KINGDOM DAY

From the moment we woke up, Mike had one thing on his mind all day…. the rental car he had to pick up by 5pm. He spent the good part of the morning on the phone with them figuring out the best way to get there. After another yummy breakfast at Kona Café and getting dinner reservations there for that night, we headed to the bus station outside our hotel and waited for a bus to take us to the Animal Kingdom. After 2 stops at other hotels, we made it around noon. Mike, of course, was looking for the station he needed to catch later on to get to Budget at the Doubletree Hotel in Downtown Disney, but didn't see anything so we went thru the gates of the Animal Kingdom and into Guest Relations to inquire. He got conflicting information than before so now he was more consumed with worry than ever. I felt like I was spending the day with Rain Man!
We headed over to "Africa" to see about getting a Fast Pass on the safari. The next Fast Pass was for 3:30pm and this would not work with the rental car plans so we had to axe that attraction. We then headed over to "Asia" and on our way Elissa spots Baloo the Bear and King Louie the ape taking pictures with people so we got in line for that. Kira was interested and terrified all in one, but Elissa jumped right in and we took a picture. Cute! We found our way to the river rapids and Elissa wanted to go on the ride even after I explained and showed her first hand that we would get soaked. She was just over in the height requirement and so she and I got in line while Mike stayed behind with Kira. We did get soaked and Elissa even more so, but she enjoyed it even though half the time she had her hands over her eyes! Then the 4 of us wondered over to "DinoLand" and Mike took Elissa to The Boneyard, a play maze with fossil remains and I took Kira to scope out the attractions in the area, since we had little time left before Mike had to leave for the rental car (he had reminded me about a dozen times since then). Elissa spotted the TriceraTop Spin, a flying ride, and so the 4 of us went on that. Then the moment Mike had been waiting for had come and he left at around 3:00pm for the car.
I looked at the map of the park and I didn't see anything else we could do with 2 young kids and just me, so we headed out. It was a 5 minute walk to the bus station and as I strolled up, the bus to our hotel had just pulled away. The next bus came 20 minutes later and the bus driver directed me to the back handicap door because of the stroller. My mind was racing as to the best way to handle getting the kids and our stuff on the bus by myself. I lifted Elissa in and then Kira and directed Elissa to hold Kira's hand and not to let go (I imagined Kira tumbling down the stairs). I threw the backpack in, turned around to fold down the stroller and heard the doors closing. Yikes! My worst fear as a mother was coming true… my kids and I separated in a unfamiliar town!! I threw my whole body into the closing doors at the last moment and crunch. Thank goodness for sensors and the doors automatically reopened after they slammed into me. I stayed in that doorway and reached out with my foot for the stroller and somehow I got that 22 lb. thing folded and hurled into the bus in 2 seconds flat! Adrenaline works like a charm. After the bus started going, the folded stroller wheeled down the isle and landed in someone's stuff, but they didn't give me a hard time because they knew what I just went through. We got back to our room, I put Kira down for her nap and Elissa played outside the room in the grass while I sat on the patio and relaxed… ah!
At about 5:45pm, I see Mike coming down the walkway. He sits down to relax and I tell him I made different dinner reservations on the Boardwalk at a place called Spoodles. I really wanted to check out the Boardwalk (reminiscent of Atlantic City) and also see the other hotel we were considering when booking this trip. Plus, it was still early (all of us were still on west coast time) and what were we going to do at the hotel until 8:00pm? So we packed up the stroller once again, woke up Kira (she had slept for a good 3 hours) and headed to the monorail. Getting to the Boardwalk meant going via the monorail to Epcot, walking thru Epcot's World Showcase (again), to the ferryboat landing, and taking a boat to the Boardwalk. When we reached the ferryboats they were all sitting on the side of the lake that no one could get to. No one was in line so we decided to walk over the bridges to get to the Boardwalk.
We had an 8:20pm reservation and we checked in at 8:10pm. We were seated for dinner at 9:00pm! After dinner and waiting for 15 minutes for dessert, we left at 10:20pm or so. We strolled back over the bridges, headed towards Epcot's World Showcase back entrance and noticed the lights turned down and a security guard at the turnstile. Oh crap. He told us the park had closed over an hour ago and radioed over to the monorail station and said the last one just pulled out of the station. There was no way we were making it even if he did let us in. I had visions of trying to get a cab in the dead of night (do Floridians really turn in for the evening this early?) with 2 kids in tow, a huge fare and our reoccurring theme of another tip payout! He directed us to cross back over the bridge to the Beach Club Resort (at least we got to see first hand the other hotel we were considering to stay in), through their lobby, out to the bus station to catch the 1st bus to Downtown Disney and then transfer to another bus heading to our hotel. All the doors into the Beach Club were opened by the guest's key card. I realized this just as someone entered in and I was about 100 yards away, so I sprinted as fast as I could and just as the doors closed, I swung it open. Whew! [What was it with me and doors?!]
We wondered thru the hotel and out to the bus stop. Luckily the buses run until 3:00am, but we still were the only souls waiting. The bus came and took us to Downtown Disney, which was a different scene all together. Massive people, many of them high school students, crowded this station. One bus pulled up for the Pop Century Hotel and after they all loaded (and not all them got on), it looked like those crowded buses in a third world country you see on national TV. I was so glad they all were on that bus and not ours. The kids were doing amazingly well and after a 20 minute wait we finally got on our bus. Again, our hotel was the last stop of 3 places, but alas we got there. I never thought I'd say this of my time on this earth, but I can now say that I've seen fireworks from a bus. We watched the Magic Kingdom's fireworks display for Grad Night students on our way home. The kids were fast asleep in our laps and here again we were trying to figure out how to get them out of the bus with all our stuff. At least this time Mike was with me. He moved Elissa's head against me, exited the rear side door of the bus with the bag and stroller and was in the process of setting up the stroller when the doors started to close. What are the chances of this happening two times in one trip?! I was yelling to Mike to forget about the stroller and come get Elissa… I couldn't carry two asleep kids off the bus! He got slammed by the doors on the way back in, but we made it out with both kids as the bus driver made a comment that the back doors were only to be used for getting off the bus, not on … "Oh, eat my shorts dude!" It was midnight… we made our way back to the room, transferred the kids to bed and were fast asleep.

SUNDAY, April 30h, 2006 – GOODBYE DISNEY WORLD, HELLO CRUISE SHIP!

Now this was the day I had been looking forward to! Even back when we booked the trip our travel agent asked me, "Are you sure you don't just want to skip the parks all together with those young kids and just go on the cruise and relax?" Nah, we'll be fine… we had just done Disneyland then and it was a breeze. HA, if only I would've known better! But yeah, the day was finally here to head to Port Canaveral and board the Disney Wonder for our 4 night trip to the Bahamas.
We got ready, packed up our stuff (I was a pro packer by now), and headed to a quick breakfast at the snack shop of the hotel. They had just finished serving breakfast at 10:30am. Did I mention I wanted to leave by 10am? We grabbed a few pastries and fruit, waited for everyone to take bathroom breaks before we headed out on the road for the next hour. We headed to the parking lot for our rental car and wow, I was shocked that Mike was opening a minivan. Rain Man had come through! We got a free upgrade with a coupon we used. We headed out and I couldn't help but feel a little like we were on the Amazing Race show. I was driving and Mike was studying the directions. No mistakes and we were well on our way. There were a few tollbooths on our drive and Mike made some last minute business calls before all US amenities (i.e. cell phone service) ceased. Nearing the end of our journey we noticed a small brush fire to the side of the highway, but saw a fire truck pulling out onto the highway so we figured it was a controlled fire. Finally, after about an hour total, we crested the top of the bridge we came to know on our previous cruise trip in '03 and there she was – The Disney Wonder!
We pulled around to the curb of the terminal and unloaded our stuff. The porter took the big bags and of course, we paid yet another tip (99 bottles of beer on wall…). The girls and I with the stroller and 2 backpacks attached, headed through security and up to the terminal while Mike took the car back to the rental car company down the street where he'd be shuttled back by a driver. I checked in, this time in the Castaway Club line since we were repeat cruisers and was helped immediately. I didn't have to do anything since we already had our KTTW (Key to the World) cards as they had also been our hotel keys and park passes, and Mike took care of all the paperwork back at the hotel one morning.
We hung out as I reminisced from 3 years prior, Elissa took a picture with Captain Mickey Mouse and about 10 minutes later Mike came up the escalator. It wasn't crowded at all, but maybe that was because it was already 1:00pm. Some things had changed for the better since our last cruise… we booked all our excursions via computer before we left home so we didn't have to rush onboard and try to get reservations. I did make it a point to make a hair braiding appointment and try and change our dinner time as we learned we had the rotation APPT at 5:45pm. We had requested early seating when we booked the vacation, but the one rotation I didn't want was getting Parrot Cay twice and sure enough that's the one we got. Also, I got to thinking, we all still hadn't adjusted to the time difference. At Disney World we were used to eating at 8pm (or later). I knew it would mean we probably wouldn't see any shows, since the girls would be taking naps until right before dinner.
After an unsuccessful change to the dining rotation, we headed to our stateroom #6616 to drop off the bags and stroller (yeah, we could finally pack the stroller away and let them roam free!). We went up to deck 9 to Beach Blanket buffet for lunch. I felt so rejuvenated and happy. The service was top notch and the people were so friendly. Who wouldn't feel like a queen, when a server knows your every need before you do and cuts up the girl's food for them? Ah, the vacation had finally become relaxing.
We finished up and roamed around the ship showing the girls everything. I completely forgot about the meet-n-great with the other Disney board members. Before we knew it, it was time for the mandatory boat drill and this time we purposely didn't put the girls down for a nap knowing we all had to be accounted for and the loud horn blasts would wake them up anyway! It was actually a decent muster drill. Kira wanted to wear her vest and it was the cutest thing too. They have these new ones for infants and toddlers with a built-in cap and sleeves… she almost passed out being bundled in the orange nylon material, but she insisted on wearing it. The crew let a few of us with very young kids leave first and we headed to our room for Kira to take her nap.
Elissa and I went up to the sailaway party. What a blast… a real dance party! It was too loud for Elissa so we watched the ship push off from the pier, and then I took her to the kids club. I got a pager and walked her around so she could get acclimated. I went back to the room so Elissa could get some rest and Kira and Mike were fast asleep. I went back out to roam around and wanted to try to find Adina, our previous server on The Magic. [Adina and I have kept in contact via email and long story short, we both feel that it was meant to be that she was now working on a completely different ship than she did 3 years ago and that we just happened to book a trip on that very ship! Adina was supposed to be on vacation through mid May, but cut her vacation short so she could be back on the ship to see us. What an angel!] After my exploration around, I was headed back up to the room, when I spotted her. She was handing out disinfecting wipes outside Triton's. [Each time you board or step into a restaurant on the ship there is a portable hand washing station with disinfectant goop and a crewmember handing out wipes so that each and every person washes their hands before entering to ensure the reduction of illnesses.] I got in line to get a wipe and she saw me. We both couldn't believe we were seeing each other again! We gave each other a big hug and quickly exchanged "how are you's" as I didn't want to take her from her work. I knew we'd have more time to catch up later.
I went back to the room to get ready for dinner; I wasn't even hungry. We headed down to Animator's Palate and met our servers, Chantana from Thailand and Lee from Great Britain. I love Animator's Palate… everything is black and white… the chairs, the plates, even the vests on the servers. As the evening progresses, the giant paintbrush “poles” display another color. The framed drawings on the wall change with color and design. The grand “finale” is a video presentation and the entire room comes to life with color. By the end of our meal the ship was rocking pretty good and on our way out of the restaurant, we were bumping into walls. We went back to the room so Mike could take some Dramamine pills and then we headed to the theatre to see the comedian, ventriloquist (tennis ball guy) Michael Harrison. He was hilarious and we saw a lot of the show, but eventually Kira was getting restless and tired (and not to mention probably feeling a little seasick). We went back to the room and our cabin steward had made our first towel animal, a monkey! I put both girls to bed as Mike was ready to puke. He lay there and as the cabin creaked during each swell, he said, "This is a trip from H-E-L-L." We both were rocked to sleep in no time and no up-chucks during the night.

MONDAY, May 1st, 2006 – NASSAU, BAHAMAS

The next morning we went down to Parrot Cay for the breakfast buffet. Yum! After breakfast, we bumped into our server Chantana, who had "wipe duty". We started chatting and I mentioned that I felt our dinner time of 5:45pm was too early for us and she told us to go talk to Pierre the head server, that he does all the seating arrangements. I walked back in to the restaurant, found Pierre and on the computer he pulled up this program with table numbers that coordinated with room numbers. I asked him if the 8:00pm seating was available and it was, so then I asked if there was a table with Adina as the server. There was! He tapped our room number on the touch screen and selected the table and voila, we were switched. I walked out and then Mike started asking me all these questions in front of Chantana, but I felt very uncomfortable because I switched to Adina, but didn't want her (or Mike, I wanted to surprise him) to know I had requested Adina as our server. I just told them we were switched to 8:00pm and I shrugged my shoulder's at the rest of the questions that were coming my way.
We headed back to the room to get sunscreen on everyone and then headed to Wave Bands to meet for our 11am excursion, Discover Atlantis. Mike was all in a bad mood because of yet another switch I had done, but then he said it would be cool if we were assigned Adina and that's when I had to fess up. He was then okay with the switch I had done. We went down with the group, across the pier and into awaiting buses. As we drove thru town, it was much like any other 3rd world country we had visited in the past… poor and run down. But then we crossed over a bridge to what is known as Paradise Island and wow, it was a different city.
We parked and walked across the street, through some shops and into the Atlantis Resort. The tour was moving quite slow, so we went on ahead and ended up joining another tour guide who was much more efficient. I thought it was a great tour… saw parts of the hotel, some of the many pools and went through what is known as The Dig, an underground cave aquarium. It's quite impressive. After the tour we walked around the grounds and saw even more things… the beach, the children's pool, and the Mayan Temple water slides. Now that was awesome to see… it's a vertical drop down a waterslide and as it approaches the bottom it becomes a fully enclosed see-thru tunnel which is surrounded by another aquarium tank with sharks and fish swimming around. The slide next to it is more of my pace… people on inner tubes that inch along as they see the fish and sharks. After we saw most of the grounds, we found a little place to grab some lunch near the children's pool. We ordered chicken nuggets for the kids… $7 for 8 nuggets, rip off! Then we sat down and as Mike opened the box of nuggets, a seagull swooped down and grabbed one right out of the box! We ate the rest of our meal crouched over our food.
After lunch, we made our way back to the ship and got back on board a little after 4pm. Kira and Mike took a nap while I took Elissa up to the pool. It wasn't crowded at all with only about 3 other kids in the pool. She started out in the one Mickey ear pool that is mostly spraying water down a drain, then a few minutes later she went in the other Mickey ear pool which is like a 2 feet deep spa for kids. She was hesitant, but finally she got in the even deeper Mickey face pool which is still only about 3 1/2 feet deep. She spent most of her time in there kicking around and getting use to being in a pool again.
Then after about a half hour or so, she asked me if she could go down the waterslide. I was shocked that she even thought of going down. But I didn't let my concern show as I didn't want to freak her out. So, I led her up the stairs and told the lady that it was her first time and that she didn't know how to swim. The lifeguard asked if she was over 3 years old and then gave the go-ahead. Thinking she was going to beat me down, I ran down the stairs and over to where the slide lets out with a pool of circulating water waiting for her to crash into. I was questioning my judgment of sending her down this thing. Then the next thing I see is her swim shoes, but no Elissa. Good gravy, where's my daughter? Then I see her coming around the corner down the slide and she's on her back, head first. How in the world she ended up in that position is beyond comprehension! Another lifeguard was at the bottom and saw my anxiety about all this, and he reached over the slide wall and plucked her out before she hit the water that was pooling down at the bottom. I praised her for going and asked if she liked it. There was no comment. I then asked if she'd like to go again (was I nuts?) and she said no. Thank goodness. I was so proud of her trying it though. Maybe after she learns how to swim, she can go down again… and perhaps we'll both be more comfortable!
Next it was time to get dressed up for dinner (for formal night), but this time for our 8:00pm time slot. In my opinion it was perfect… the girls got to take full naps, we weren't rushed to get ready, and we were actually hungry enough for dinner (and really it was only 5pm our time… my famous last words on this trip!). Since we changed dining rotations, we were headed to Animator's Palate again and then again the next night (you repeat restaurants for the 2nd and 3rd night). We would miss Triton's restaurant this trip because our new assigned timeslot of 8pm went there the night before, but at least we wouldn't be in Parrot Cay for the next two nights as we were assigned originally.
We got in line to get a hand wipe before entering the dining room, and there was Adina handing out wipes. She gave us all a big hug and couldn't believe how much Elissa had grown. She had tears of joy in her eyes! It was precious to watch. We entered in and found our table, #42. We met our assistant server, Dimeitry from Russia. We ate and watched the show again, which was a special treat. Adina asked about "Miss Laurie" and Nichol (mom and sister that were with us on our last trip) and we got caught up on each others' lives. She couldn't believe we were there and she was a servant as always. We finished dinner and headed to midship where they were having the character autographs. We didn't stand in line for a signing mainly because the line was too long, it was already 10:00pm, and Kira wasn't too fond of these strange, moving, furry things anyway. We decided to all go into the kid's club so the girls could let off some steam. Elissa and Kira had fun going down the slide and climbing on the animal playground. We then headed back to our room and there waiting was our next towel creation, the "Leaning Towel of Pisa", a nice little marketing plug for Disney's new Mediterranean cruises in the summer of 2007. We got ready for bed and off to dreamland we went.

TUESDAY, May 2nd, 2006 – CASTAWAY CAY DAY!
I woke up as the ship slowed down coming into port. I went out on the balcony and saw Castaway Cay! It looked the same as 3 years ago and it brought back all the wonderful memories. I wished mom and Nik were there again with us! I came back in the cabin and everyone was still asleep so I went up to deck 9 to refill the kids juice cups and decided to eat at the Beach Blanket Buffet while I was there. I sat down outside and heard the seagulls cawing. I had flashbacks to the nugget stealing incident so I proceeded under a covering and enjoyed my breakfast alone overlooking beautiful Castaway Cay.
When I got back to the room, everyone was still asleep, so I woke Mike and the kids up and got ready for beach day! We went down to Parrot Cay for breakfast (again). [I only had oatmeal this time. Shhhh!] We finally headed off the ship around 11am as they were just tearing down the camera equipment for the picture on Castaway Cay with the ship in the background. We all walked to the far end of the beach and found a couple of lounge chairs with an umbrella. It wasn't as crowded as our May cruise 3 years ago, but maybe it seemed that way since we were at the far end of the island.
It was a warm and clear day… perfect weather. I took Elissa down to the water and burr, it was chilly. It was probably about 76 degrees or so, but not the typical Caribbean water that is usually so warm. She had fun playing near the water in the sand with her sand toys and also in the water with her floaties on. Mike brought Kira to us, but she doesn't think that sand and water should be mixed. She's fine in our pool and bathtub and she's a little okay with sand at the park, but when you put the two together and you try and put her down, she turns into a cat that is about to be put into a bathtub of water!
Mike then took the snorkel equipment, minus fins, and went out to the snorkel area. He saw a few fish and the swim out was long with no fins on. He had fun though… a nice break. After a couple hours on the beach, we headed to “Cookies BBQ” there on the island for lunch. We went through the buffet just in time as they were closing. We then walked over to the shop and bought Mike and the girls t-shirts. We headed back to the ship and Mike and the girls took naps. I went down to the lower decks and checked out Bingo, but thought that spending $20 for 1 card was too much, especially when it's just luck. It was 5pm when the horn blew and I stood at a porthole and watched the last minute people make their way back on the ship. Then I headed to the shops to find a gift for mom, since I didn't really find anything for her on the island. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was the gift… a hand drawn picture of Castaway Cay with the ship in the background… it reminded me of our unforgettable trip last time. I also got another pair of mickey glasses for Elissa and other fun things for the girls.
I went back to the room and relaxed before dinner. It was pirate night, and we didn't bring any pirate costumes or accessories, but it was fun looking at the outfits people had on, especially the young kids. We ate at Animator's Palate again (since you repeat restaurants for the 2nd & 3rd nights), but this time the "show" wasn't on, but we did have fun dancing with the servers for pirate night. We again were one of the last ones out of the restaurant because we were chatting with Adina. We wondered through Shutters to look at our stack of pictures that the photographers had been taking throughout the trip and then to midship to the shops, but they were closed and someone reminded us about the live fireworks up on the top deck. We went up for the "Music Under the Stars" show where there was live music and dancing and we got up to the deck just in time for the fireworks. We were all in awe… watching fireworks off the deck of this ship in the middle of nowhere out to sea. We had our hands over the girls ears and they were fine. After a quick fireworks display, we headed back to the cabin and called it a night. When we got back to our room, an elephant was waiting on the dresser as our towel creation. Then off to sleep we went.

WEDNESDAY, May 3rd, 2006 – DAY AT SEA

Since it was our day at sea today, we could totally take our time doing whatever. We decided we would try out the formal restaurant, Triton's, for breakfast since we wouldn't be experiencing dinner there. We headed down and ate at this made-to-order restaurant. It was okay… the server was short and to the point and the food was well, your standard eggs and pancakes.
After breakfast, we went back to the room to get sunscreen on and headed up to the pools. I had an 11:30am appointment to get my hair braided. Mike took the girls to the kid's club to roam around, and then mid way through the braiding, he dropped Elissa off with me for her to watch and took Kira to the Mickey pool. After they finished with my Rastafarian hair, all 23 braids, I took Elissa and met up with Mike and Kira. Both Elissa and Kira had a blast in the pools. It was a bit crowded and a challenge trying to keep Kira in the one Mickey ear pool, the only pool that all the non potty trained kids with swim diapers are allowed. We brought the sand toys up with us, so that keep her entertained in the fountains and ankle deep water.
After awhile there, we packed up and headed to lunch at the Beach Blanket Buffet. It was okay… lots of seafood, crab, calamari, shrimp, etc. Thank goodness they had mac-n-cheese and some stuff for the girls in one of the buffet lines. As always, the dessert choices were to die for. After lunch, we headed back to the room to put the kids down for a nap. It took awhile, but finally Kira went to sleep while Mike went out to do some exploring. I worked on my journal, but Elissa too restless to go down for a nap. So when Mike came back I took Elissa to kid's club so I could enjoy some time in the adult's only pool. I dropped her off and headed up to the pool when I realized I left the pager in the room and that Mike wouldn't be able to leave Kira sleeping alone in the room to go get Elissa if they paged us. So off to the room I went for the pager. Mike was taking a shower and Kira was still sleeping so I grabbed the pager and headed back up to the pool.
Just as I found the perfect spot to set my towel down, the pager went off. Oh man, there went my relaxing moment! I headed down to kid's club and asked if they paged me. They hadn't, my pager was beeping because it was out of batteries! So while I was there, I decided to check and see how Elissa was doing, so I scanned the group of kids for her. I didn't see her anywhere. I know Disney is extra careful about that stuff, but I still couldn't help but panic a little bit. They welcomed me in the "gate" and I went in the back room, where I finally spotted her sitting amongst another group of kids where they were preparing for a "graduation" of sorts (funny since this was her first time in the kid's club). She was given a Mickey ears graduation cap and a T-shirt. When her and I locked eyes, she got up to greet me, and didn't want to stay. I was determined to enjoy some time at the pool. I dropped her off back in the room where Mike was now asleep along with Kira and told her to not wake them up and to rest in her bed. I headed up to the pool and enjoyed doing a few laps and treading some water. There was a group there who were totally intoxicated and 2 of the women were trying to convince the guys to come visit them after the trip at their house out of state somewhere… why on earth they were on a Disney cruise is beyond me? I decided to head over to the Mickey pool and lay out and watch the kids play… more my speed, I suppose. I then headed over to Cove Café and got a latte…. Ah!
I headed back to the room to check up on everyone and Elissa was playing quietly while Mike and Kira were still asleep. They woke up and we got ready for dinner. We headed down to Parrot Cay and enjoyed the casual atmosphere for dinner. The servers were upbeat as usual and performed a little number with flags from each country. We handed out the tips to our servers and it took much persuasion for Adina to take hers… she felt she couldn't take a tip from her friends. We also got her some calling cards and some pictures of us all from our last trip.
We wondered to midship after dinner and went through the shops. After buying a few souvenirs, we came out and there were all the characters coming out to do the big "Til' We Meet Again' party (we just happened upon everything, we never looked at our daily brochure for events, the new navigators are more confusing if you ask me). We stood on the balcony on deck 4 and as the characters said goodbye, they came up the stairs and went right past us to exit into Studio Sea. Goofy even stopped and did a little dance especially for Elissa (and our camcorder).
Then we went to turn in our pager to the kid's club and let the kids work off their dinner. We headed back to our room when we started panicking because we forgot about packing the bags and having them ready and sitting outside the door by 11pm. It was already 10:45pm! Mike entertained the exhausted kids while I threw everything into the suitcases. I was an experienced packer by now, but it was next to impossible to pack it all in 15 minutes. I got most of the items packed up, but the girls had to get to sleep before the meltdowns would start. Finally at 11:30pm the girls were down and the bags were packed and outside the door. We called guest services because we noticed that everyone else's bags had already been picked up. They informed us that we probably were still in the window of the final pickup (the last run-thru must be midnight because I kept finding things to put in the bag and would keep going outside to get them and retrieve things we needed for tomorrow). I finally crashed into bed at midnight.

THURSDAY, May 4th, 2006 – LAST DAY

I somehow woke up right on time, since we hadn't called for a morning wake up call. Mike and I were doing the last minute packing and the girls were sound asleep since it was still early, 7:00am. The sky was brown and hazy… we were back in America! I opened our balcony door, the smoke smell came rushing in and I knew there was a fire somewhere. Little did I know that the small brushfire we saw on our way to the cruise ship was the start of a huge fire outbreak and had been wreaking havoc in Florida while we were out to sea. Our scheduled breakfast time was 8:00am sharp down in Parrot Cay (that's more good news about having late dining in the evening… or we would've been having breakfast at 6:45am).
We ate and said our last goodbyes to Dimeitry and Adina. It was sad to say good-bye, but Adina said she may come out to visit when her contract is up in October. Once again, we were the last to leave the dining room and then we heard the announcement over the loud speakers that it was the last call for disembarkation. I raced in the bathroom to change Kira's diaper since she did a number, and off the ship we walked. We made our way to where our luggage was waiting. Our pieces were the only ones left and of course, we couldn't pass up giving a tip (our last one) to the handler to help with the luggage. We breezed through customs and the handler showed us to the Budget car rental waiting area. The group ahead of us in line got on the first shuttle van, but a few minutes later another van came and picked us up and took us to the rental car place a few minutes down the street. The van driver told us how lucky we were to be able to leave the city, that this was the first day since we got here 4 days ago, that the highways weren't closed due to the fires.
We got to the rental place and got our car, a huge grandma car! They told us we had to take a roundabout way (lots of intersections, not a highway) out of Port Canaveral to get to the airport due to road closures. This would tack on about 25 minutes more to our drive, but at least we got through. About 15 minutes into our drive, Mike told me he thought he left the car seat carrier in the parking lot where we picked the car up. Sure enough, we got to the airport and we had nothing to put the car seat into to check onto the plane, so we had to take it as a carryon.
We got to the airport counter at about noon. I wanted to try and get on standby for an earlier flight, but because of the added drive time, we were too late for check-in on the 12:30pm flight. We had about 2 1/2 hours to kill before our flight out at 2:39pm. Reality had set in and vacation letdown had begun, even Elissa had a meltdown in the airport. We went through some shops, grabbed some snacks and headed to our terminal to board the plane. They hurried everyone on board, arranged most of the standby's on and were about to shut the doors to the plane, when a hose blew and the air stopped. We sat there for about 20 minutes and it was getting warmer by the minute. Good news it was fixed and we didn't have to switch planes or anything and we were on our way. Kira had finally fallen asleep in Mike's arms and then we carefully transferred her to her car seat that was sitting in the window seat. She woke for a moment, but was fast asleep. Upon landing in Dallas, Kira was still half asleep, but eventually woke up after I had a disciplinary session with Elissa. We had a 2 hour layover, but because the first leg was late, it ended up not being so bad. I went and picked up some food for us all and we boarded shortly after. Elissa fell asleep on this flight and we woke her up when we landed in San Diego. We met mom and our car (all in one piece) outside and told her about our trip the entire ride home… we were already reminiscing.

I loved reading your report! Thanks!

I am now a little leary of the lobby in the Hawaii building at the Polynesion. We are staying there in July. I thought that building had been remodeled also?

My apologies... we were first in the Tahiti bldg. before moving to Samoa. Enjoy your trip!

Could you be any more long winded? Help. NO diaper content stories, please.

I actually enjoyed your "conversational" writing style!! You gave ample warning of the length of your report...sfgarb must have missed that! :goodvibes

Isn't it funny sometimes what we call a "vacation!" :lmao: Great report! :thumbsup2 Maybe next time you will do just the cruise?!?! :teeth:
Thanks for taking the time! :Pinkbounc

I really enjoyed your trip report! I loved how long it was and was amply warned that it would be long from your title. Some people can be SO RUDE- just ignore the rude person on this thread. :) I thought your trip report was great! :cool1:

I loved reading your report. I was laughing by myself as I was visualizing the bus door closing scene. This reminds us that when something goes wrong we can look back and laugh later. These crazy things that happen are memories too.
On our trip to WDW last April we missed our bus shuttle to Animal Kingdom from our off-site hotel by 10 seconds :sad2: ....(we were right in the lobby area as the bus passed by). The next one was 2 or 3 hours later...Oh well the good thing was that my kids got to enjoy the pool and waterslides at the hotel since we always left the hotel right after breakfast each day and returned really late at night each time.
We also left our stroller with camera and camcorder alone in Epcot (Germany). We realized this when we were at the next country and had to rush back... but thank goodness everything was there waiting.

Thanks again for the report. Loved ALL the details!

:thumbsup2

BibbidyBobbidyBoo I couldn't agree more.

Thank you for a great report. You have spent a lot of time and effort in writing it and I have learnt quite a few things in readiness for our first cruise in November.
