Val, The FB page is a closed group so not just anyone can go there. i.e. you have to be on the cruise and join that group. However I guess there might be people on there who aren't members here which I think is what you are meaning. As I said I haven't been on much, but from what I see it is an extension of this group but a different way of chatting.....
OK, I am active on both facebook and here. I keep both sites open all the time so getting it to load isn't an issue.
Facebook has not had any discussions that are in any way a decision making thread. So far main topics have been 1-requests for advice on how to handle motion sickness because a friend they are bringing with them has a serious issue with it. 2-what in the heck do you do to fill four days at sea twice (LOL) 3-advice on packing The rest of the posts are generally chatting.. e.g.: I booked at this hotel, my friend is coming with me, etc. Jan Easterly did tell people how to find FE list etc to sign up here and the Dis board has been mentioned to go to for advice and info.
One reason I think a few are using facebook is because they do not know about this site. I found it so by accident (before Alaska cruise, last year) that I can't even tell you how it happened except I wasn't looking for it
I will continue to monitor both and if I see any signs that someone needs to be "suggested" to come here with their issue/cause/help I will definitely tell them so.
But also if that group wanted to form their own social network separate of what goes here that is their decision. But from what I can see most of the questions are from newbies and responses from people that are also here on the board.
That answer most concerns???
OY VEY!! Who know that my post about my and Jason's gay marriage would cause less controversy than DIS vs. FB?!?!?(I'm just kidding, of course----I don't think there's any controversy)
I know that Jason and I will not be doing FB....but I think everyone should mix and mingle whenever and wherever they feel comfortable. As long as most the major decisions are being made and/or communicated involving everyone....then I think we're all good. And as long as there is a healthy batch of folks who are doing both DIS & FB and can keep us all in the loop, keep the communication connected, etc. then that will be great!!
(Also....if there are folks on FB who are NOT on the DIS, definitely encourage them to at least sign up over here and then email or PM me so they can get lanyards if they want them!!)

Good Morning, Happy Cruisers!
For what it's worth, my opinion is - what is decided on THIS thread is the group decision - facebook is a discussion, but it is NOT the DIS.
The whole point (for me) of joining the lanyard team IS to keep from having to pack, carry and deliver FE gifts. If people want to NOT give my cabin an FE gift because *all* I contributed was a share of the lanyards, then that is their option.
I've always put something in every FE in every hall (for the fun of it) whether that cabin was on my list or not, but I just can't do it any more .
Hope everyone has a lovely day of food fireworks and (for Americans) remembering what it is we are really celebrating today - The Independance of our Nation.
Happy Day, all!
Oh it's not a senior thing, Pixiegran, I am not involved in Facebook at all. (I am discouraged by both my jobs from having a presence on facebook because of my work for youth and because of its infinite potential for providing too much intimate access to your personal life)-----plus I have to admit I'm not such a huge fan of the guy who created/owns the site so I'm not so in favor of supporting him.
I agree. So I guess I'm confused. Has there been organizing going on the FB page about our activities like Fish Extenders, DIS Meets, etc.? (Isn't it odd to set up "DIS activities" on another website?!) More importantly, though, if we aren't on facebook how are we supposed to know what is going on or anything? I thought that was the point of the DIS.
I guess if the majority of the planning is happening on facebook rather than here on the DIS, then Jason and I will have to pull out of some of the activities, as well, because we won't know what's going on, what group we're in for fish extenders, or what the new rules/parameters are that are being set up.

Bob was a teacher and I worked at the high school for a couple of years. I choose not to be a part of Facebook for multiple reasons, some of them mentioned by Jason, even though friends and family have asked me to 'friend them'. I would be interested in hearing from those who use Facebook as to why they prefer to communicate there instead of here about our cruise. Is there some reason you prefer that site? I ask because I have never used it so don't know what advantages it might have.
Since I haven't read it myself, I also need to ask, have decisions about this groups activities actually been made over on Facebook? Is it more then just individuals sharing their plans? I don't believe anyone intended to exclude or hurt peoples feelings, but I think it is very important we clear this up so as not to have a riff here. The more excitement generated through talk about this cruise the better for all of us. However, I agree that DISboard group decisions and the sharing of ideas leading to those decisions should be made on the DISboard. VAL
Looking forward to sailing with you both again!
We are Barrie, Jack & Jadenand areSUPER

Lexi, I am sure no decisions have been made about splitting the FE groups as the FE group leader isn't active here right now. She has a new job which I imagine is taking her time at the moment.
Wow, I have to say I sure created a monster. I have deleted my question from FB. If I could, I would here as well. Sorry!

My own take on this is that people over on the FB thread should be encouraged to come over here to make decisions etc as it is actually a DIS cruise group. I know the person asking the question about lanyards did do that but got more replies over there. But this is the place to make arrangements and decisions really. I think the FB group should be more of a chat group really.
Hopefully Heather the FE organiser will become more involved eventually and some progress can be made with the FE groups which will help, but I know she has just changed jobs so will be taken up with that at the moment.

This may be just my opinion but.....
If you go to Facebook is there a site that anyone who joins FB can go to, called something like the DCLHawaii cruise?
If that is the case, I feel a separate group as been formed and it is not just people sending private PM's or e-mails and discussing this cruise. That is fine and I think it is similar to the situation where you may participate and be a part of our DISboard group but you also are a part of the Cruise Critic group that is on our cruise. But, any activities discussed or planned on the Cruise Critic board, or FB does not represent the Disboard group. How could it be otherwise - it is a separate web site that not everyone who is on DISboards has access to - it is Cruise Critic or Facebook but not DISboards.
I appreciate that the DISboards is not always as technically as smooth as I would like. For example the fact you can't just cut and paste a picture in is a pain. Also, I know the inability to post a copy of a spreadsheet is a problem. But it is my choice to stay with DISboards instead of planning my activities on another site with another group.
