Hi all, just got off the Disney Wonder from Alaska and she is now off to dry dock for two weeks.

According to the cast and crew, there are not alot of changes going to happen in this drydock. Lots of maintenance things and possibly some new enclosures. The biggest thing I was told is that they are doing a major overhaul to the DCL Laundry Services and they will have to in fact cut out a portion of the ship in order to get the new equipment in since it will not fit through the doors.

Well one of the rumors are that they are making Beach Blanket more enclosed. That seems to be the strongest one. Some are saying they are hearing about the virtual portholes. I hope that one is not true. I am not a fan of these as they have drasicly raised the prices of inside rooms on the new ships. In some cases it is cheeper to get a real window than a inside.

In Alaska we heard about enclosing BBB but not the virtual portholes.

I talked with Captain Thord about the likelihood of going by Volcano National Park on the Island of Hawaii. He didn't know, but said he would check and let me know before I got off the cruise.

Unfortunately, as it currently stands, he checks with his navigational officer, and due to the tight itinerary, we will NOT be going by the volcano. We will port in Hilo and then head up the coast towards Maui. Not enough time to go around the bottom of island.

Also, he said at end of island stops, we will be going straight across the ocean so we will not be able to go by on our way from the islands back towards the mainland.

Sorry to disappoint, but that is the official word according to Captain Thord!

The cast members are really looking forward to Hawaii and can't wait til next April!

I was catching up with the facebook page for our cruise and one of the gals Jan Easterly has been asking everyone to put their real name and Dis name down and has been keeping a list. Thought it could be useful for some and the FE gifts they are working on. So here it is as of today--

They told us it would be glass walls like the way they enclosed Cove Cafe and the Outlook Bar on deck 10. It is VERY CLASSY and very comfortable. It is to make the back of BBB more useful in cold and windy weather. In Alaska the inside was CROWDED because the outside was unavailable during drizzly, cold and windy periods.

I understand the preference of some for privacy.
I understand the desire of some to get to know people.

I am keeping the list in a WORD document and would appreciate some discussion on how to proceed.

Well, thanks very much for the info! It was great you were able to actually talk to the captain about our cruise. It's too bad about the volcano, but I guess it gives us another reason to make another trip, right?

I worked the summer I got married at VANDERHEIDEN HALL in Troy, NY--originally an orphanage and at that time a home for kids who had been removed from their homes by the court while awaiting final determination. I was the life guard and fill in Junior Girls counselor.

Well, Hawaiian Cruisers--looks like I am now in charge of a list. Wish I had a post on page one to keep it up to date....maybe when we start our next thread I can snag an early post. (As I said before, I did not start this, AuntLynne did. But she has canceled and I will carry on. The list on Facebook is something each one of us can add to, but when a few people had trouble I was able to get it to work, so I guess it is now my list.)

Please check the list here and let me know if your entry is spelled wrong or alphabetized wrong. Also let me know if you know of someone who has canceled for sure. We want this to be a double list--one list with given name first and one with DIS name first.

Another idea to help us learn each other's names is to sign off each post or put our given name in the signature section. Then those who remember (I forget) to check the posting DIS name will connect it more readily to the given name at the end of each post.

Edited to remove names as per request of people who prefer privacy. Please advise how we want to proceed. I sure do not want to cause a problem for anyone.

Hey Jan - please add me (Cayla - padalyn) and Michael (non-dis person). Michael and are are travel companions ONLY. Folks have made the mistake of thinking of us as a couple scared1:) !!

About that list....I am doing the FE lists for the 3 NYC "first" cruises...I am keeping them on a google doc that is locked to members only. I keep the list at a minimum for the internet - but have more information on my laptop so I can print it out and have it ready for folks who need/want the full info list. I use Excel to sort and maintain the list - then I just pick the columns I wish to copy to google docs.

The info that is posted to google docs: dis name, RW name (first only), cabin, names of kids (if the person wants them - otherwise they are listed as DS/DD etc and ages if offered) and any special needs - ie: allergies, mobility issues or other info the member wishes folks to know about. On the private list: last names, email addy, and any "blanked" info that the person prefers not to post.

I have to agree about the privacy thing...the internet is a vast garbage pail of stuff....and lots of people will troll for names of neighbors traveling to plan nefarious activities....so I seldom say where I am from, my last name, and my travel plans. The Dis gets the travel plans - but nothing more....you follow? Someone would have to do a lot of research to link it all together...thus, I don't post on the FB page - I read it occosionally, but posting - not so much. (most likely going to delete myself anyway...seems kinda weird talking about the DIS on facebook actually)

For the FE gifts and most other stuff - first names seem to work out the best...we can always ask last names at a later time (like when face to face!!!). To that end - I don't have a photo posted intentionally....and I remove ALL tags with my actual face in them on FB as well....been stalked too many times and fear repeat events.


Linda - how was Alaska the second time???? I am so jealous!!!! Cathy and I went to P-Town for Labor Day weekend...it was so beautiful!!! We were supposed to meet up with Gordy and his "parents" - but life got in the way

Just an update....
We finally got power back on the Sept 1st/ & wife took me to PR for a long weekend for my 50th b~day....what a sweet heart!

We did have a small refund some weeks ago but thought it was to do with the TA cruise leaving on Saturday.

Yes, the cruise leaves on Saturday. We will miss all those who were on it last year. It won't be the same and some of you are old friends now so we will miss you all the more.

We fly over to Barcelona on Thursday which is later than I wanted but the cheapoair from the local airport doesn't fly there on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and Monday would have been too long in Barcelona. I hope all the baggage arrives with us though. I am panicking about that.

I hope that you will have a wonderful time. I so wish that we would be on this one, too. Still, when you get to Castaway Cay, I will be officially on vacation.

I had also heard about the outside portion of Beach Blanket Buffet being enclosed. I had also heard rumours about substantial upgrades being made to one room category. This seemed to point towards the virtual portholes. I am not too keen on that idea either. One of the reasons why we do inside cabins is that on the one cruise where we had a porthole, DH kept waking me up because he had seen other ships when he went to the bathroom and one morning he had to wake me up to tell me that the sunrise was 10 minutes late. At that point I swore that he would never have an outside cabin again.

As to the prices, I think the problem with the Dream and the Fantasy is not only that the virtual portholes have the novelty factor, but that there is a much smaller proportion of inside cabins on the newer ships. So the virtual portholes are creating more demand, but the supply is actually less.

Just wanted to share I got our cruise docs today for our Oct 8 eastern. A lot of people are now going nuts they got there docs. I don't know. It used to be a big deal before on line check in. Here is what I posted. it used to be a much bigger deal before online check in. It used to come with the tags and then all the stuff you had to fill out. Now it just comes with the tags and you don't really need those because the porters or bell men at WDW have them. I guess for me it now feels reall when I check in online and print the forms.

Am I wrong?

I have to say I am still excited when I get my cruise documents. I suppose a lot of this has to do with the fact that I can now do my online check in so early that it is still months until the cruise. When I have my cruise documents in my hands, I know it is getting close. I also have information in the booklet that is not online like the pick up from the resorts. When I did my online check in, I had to select a port arrival time even though I have transfers booked.

I am travelling with my DH, but in many ways I might as well travel solo. We have very different approaches to cruising. I like to do loads of different activities and he likes to hang out in the gym, by the adult pool, in the big portholes on deck 3 forward or on deck 4. I often don't see him from 8 AM to 8 PM. So far the one point where we tend to meet up is for dinner, but on our next cruise, this is not a given either. He has already announced that he will skip the dining room on Pirate Night and head to Beach Blanket Buffet instead.

Corinna: there is no longer a Pirate Night Menu or activity in the diningroom so if that is what your DH wants to avoid he can still eat in the diningroom. In Alaska we got Mickey Pirate bandanas at dinner and there was a deck party but we did not go since there were no fireworks and we were not in the Caribbean. I have sent DCL a message suggesting they revamp the show to become more ocean-appropriate.


Perhaps the "DIS name-given name" list can go in our google document. Is that private or can anyone see it?

Don't they have one on the Mexican cruises? Seems strange. I know they can't have fireworks up in Alaska but no reason not elsewhere is there? Everyone loves Pirate night. Well not the menu but the night is fun.
