Appreciate my DVC after beach trip

I just returned from photographing a wedding in Gulf Shores, Al. The trip with my wife and the wedding went very well and the weather was fantastic.

We rented a condominium for two nights though and it left a great deal to be desired. It made me appreciate DVC resorts and the excellent service and predictable room quality. I guess that my many trips to Disney has spoiled me into expecting more. The more I stay elsewhere the more I believe buying into DVC was a great decision.

My sisters enjoy vacationing at Gulf Shores, but have said that it has become extremely expensive as most of the accommodations are condos that sleep a lot of people. Can you comment on what they are talking about?

Anyway, one sister has started going to the Alabama State Parks, Gulf State in particular, and I've converted the other sister into a Disney fan. (Yay!)

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my Disney Sister will eventually go DVC.

We felt the same way about a condo we rented with my sister and BIL on Galveston Beach last year - they live in Houston, we were there for Christmas and we went down for a "New Year's beach trip". It was nice enough (clean and had most of the basics) and it was on a lovely part of the beach. We had a good time, but when we walked in, my DH sort of muttered, "Well, it's sure not DVC." My Sis and BIL have stayed with us at both OKW and BWV, and they're now looking for a resale contract. DVC has spoiled all of us.

We stayed in a one-bedroom condo that must have been furnished at the thrift store. The bed honestly was maybe 18 inches from the floor to the top of the mattress and had an awful looking bedspread on it that looked like maybe it was second hand from a prison. It cost us almost $400 for the two nights and half of the cost was extra fees that the rental company adds on. It was furnished as bare bones as it possibly could be. The den floor was covered in fruity pebbles, someone really got their moneys worth on that $69 cleaning fee.

The only positive thing I could say about it is that thankfully being a business trip i can write it off. By the way we stayed at Sugar Beach Condos just beyond the Gulf State park in Orange Beach.

BTW I haven't seen my friend "RealMickey" from Montgomery on here in a long time. Do you know him??

OMG, We feel the same way!!! We went to Old Orchard Beach in Maine and paid $200 a night for a room on the beach. What a joke!!! The beds were horrible, the bathroom was so small even the kids hated it. The balcony was so old it was slanted downward-- I was afraid to go out on it because I thought I was going to slide down it.

It was so bad that we didn't even stay the 3rd night! Give me my BW DVC anytime, thank you!!

My cousins rented the cottage on the property and I have to say my room was a 10 compared to their cottage. The upstairs bathroom had the floor tiles coming off and the floorboards were so warped that the upstairs hall was like a wave. All for $2000 a week. YUK!!!!

I'd rather hop on a plane and go to Disney!!!!

We went to Ocean City, Md for a week in July. Rented a condo which ran us $1800 bucks for the week. No where near as nice as the BC or WL. Elevator took forever to come (we were on the 3rd floor) so most times we walked down the stairs. Local restuarants were just as expensive (I will say some of the food was better quality) as at Disney (breakfast ran us about $65 bucks even at the Denny's) and supermarkets were just as expensive as all the ones near disney.

All in all we spent close to 3 grand.

I don't think I know RealMickey. If I do, I don't know him as that. However, after you've been here a while, Montgomery turns into a small town, so who knows.

Geewhiz! There is a RealMickey in Montgomery, and we are Mickey's Apprentice. Hmmm...that sounds like we know him, and are actually receiving training. Oh dear!
