what irks me more is these buttons are calculating the tip on the total bill not the subtotal without tax as it should be.

Totally agree. If I haven't already calculated the tip, I do a smaller percentage (15% sted 20) to account for that

I can’t stand them as it seems every time we have one brought to the table is when we have had lousy service and they are staring you down when you decide on the tip.

We always have servers drop them off and walk away. They come get it after we have left the table.

Went to Red Lobster for the first time in years in June. They had tablets on every table. Server came by to make sure we didn't need anything else, turned the table around and pushed a button left.
Two other restaurants seemed to only have one device for the entire restaurant so the server waiting for you to imput tip etc and approve.
