We've been on the DDP before but not since the new changes.

Can you substitute an appetizer for the dessert? I'd really rather use our snack credits for dessert later.

Unfortunately trading a dessert for an appetizer is not permitted for any reason.

DH isn't happy about it either - so we'll be paying OOP for his crabcake appys wherever they may be - not coming between DH and his crabcake....

That's ridiculous. In most cases the price of the dessert is equal to the appetizer. What a shame. :sad2:

I think it should be: Entree and non-alcoholic beverage with choice of appetizer or dessert. That would make most people pretty happy I think.

Agreed?

It's not about the price of the item. Most likely it is about prep time, and the interest in limiting basic dining to two courses. Desserts are cheaper to produce and prepare than appetizers. With two courses, they can turn the tables over faster. If you want three courses, you now have to pay extra - so Disney loses the faster table turnover, but they get more money for it. It's also not about what would make most customers happy. It's about cost efficiency for Disney. If you want the appetizers, you can still get them, you just need to pay more.

If they allowed a choice, there would be half the party ordering a dessert and the other half an appetizer, and they'd share.

There has been a lot of discussion about the trade of appetizers and desserts, and many agree that this would be the ideal situation for them.

Speculation is that Disney not only gains revenue by removing a course from the DDP, they also gain revenue because this turns the tables over faster and they are able to seat more parties in an evening. If Disney were to offer a choice, most parties would order an appetizer, two entrees, and a dessert. This would turn the tables over slower.

They do have the deluxe plan for those that want appetizers at every meal. Also as the PP mentioned, you are free to pay for an appetizer OOP. Most people still save on the plan, even with the removal of appetizers and paying OOP for them.

I think they also realize that if there are two diners, they'd lose money.

Diner 1 orders appetizer.
Diner 2 orders dessert.

They cannot police that Diner 2's fork doesn't sneak over to Diner 1's appetizer and they share, or that Diner 1 doesn't do the same to Diner 2's dessert.

By not allowing the change, they force the diners to order a dessert OOP.

(OOPS, meant order an appetizer OOP!)

We had 2 or 3 servers tell us that if they were to allow substitutions, it is an offense that they would be fired for.

I wouldn't want to see anyone lose their job over a bowl of french onion soup.;)
