Hi, everyone! I'm looking for suggestions and advice from all of you. Our trip to WDW is planned and paid for. Travel dates are Sept. 20-29 (in three weeks). Everything was going well, until my 11 year old had an emergency appendectomy this past Monday, Aug. 30. This trip is a birthday present for him, he absolutely dreams about it and he is an adventure seeker, looking forward to the most intense thrill rides.

We talked to his surgeon twice and he says he'll be "like new" in three weeks and that going on the rides will be no problem at all. But as a mother, I am really worried if this is the right decision. I'm scared to death that it will be detrimental for his healing process.

As for postponing the trip, our hotel is pre-paid and unrefundable; plane tickets are also unrefundable, we could change dates after paying the difference + $75 per ticket (we are a family of 4).

What are your thoughts on this matter?

if the doctor said he will be fine then I would still go :thumbsup2. and this is coming from a worry wart .

I had an emergency appendectomy Feb 6th and we left for WDW on March 10th. I was totally find to ride everything; RnR, ToT, EE, really everything. I was a little sore on dinosaur because it bounces you so much, but other than that, everything was fine. I did have to walk a little slower than usual (I'm normally a fast walker), but that was at home as well.

Were they able to do the surgery lapriscopicley(sp?)? That should cut healing time a lot. Just take it slow. Let him try one of the tamer thrill rides, maybe Splash. Really the only thing you should have to worry about is a ride where there's a bar that would hit where his belly button is. There aren't too many of those. Go and have a great time!

My oldest was 9 when his appedix ruptured, and he had the major surgery + naso-gastric tube and was in the hospital for 6 days. He was back at school 3 weeks after his surgery, but just got tired easily. Hopefully your son's was a little less complicated, but just take it slow and allow him to rest if he needs it.

my ds was 5 when he had his surgery ( in the hospital 6 days ) right around week 3 he was FINE... but he did get tired a little faster than normal. If the Dr. says he's ok to go & ride, then go & ride & enjoy, just be prepared to take some breaks as he needs them.

I recently had some surgery and found that if I was in a situation that put stress on my incision, I could just push on the incision scar a little (not hurting just steady pressure) and that helped take the stress off of my incision. so maybe suggest that he "support' the scar a little if he feel's too jostled around.

Unelss he happens to have some kind of unforseen complication he should definitley be fine by the time you leave. a month is more than enough healing time.

Just make sure you have some ibuprofen just in case he has some pain and discomfort.

I am also a HUGE worry wart, and I would definitely go and have FUN! I would, however, carry some meds in case he gets sore and also have on me the phone # of your doctor as well as the local hospital/walk-in, just in case. JUST IN CASE... that doesn't mean worry worry worry... put it in your bag and forget about it!!

:)

He should be fine...my only suggestion is be sure to keep the incision site(s) (not sure if had a lap?) super super clean after the sx!!! Sweat + Heat + Dirty/infected incision site is no good!
