Appears to be Noro on the Wonder

I have a question for those of you who have been on a noro infected cruise. Did you end up hiding out to try to avoid the virus? Or, is it really easy to avoid by using common sense and hygiene? As I read this thread, I just imagine myself staying inside my stateroom, trying to avoid people and their germs.

No we didn't hide, we went to shows, washed hands, and took stairs- being careful not to touch hand rails. We usually take stairs and avoid family pools, except first day early or a port day when most are off ship. DS went to club and lab but for an hour or two when they had a program, like Pluto PJ or Cooking.
Heck I would get right back on if I could for the PC without worry.

We stood in line from 9-11am to get through customs. Granted we were late getting in line but one of our pieces of luggage was on the wrong belt and we waited forever for it. I'm relieved to hear that isn't the norm.

We didn't feel the need to hide out and still went to activities.

We're on the next cruise once the Wonder makes it into San Diego - I'm not going to worry about it aside from being extra cautious with hand washing. I usually keep purell with me in case its not convenient to go straight to a bathroom after touching things, but in this case I'll just take the extra time and wash wash wash!

Pick up the soap
Now don't try to to bluff
Work up a lather
An' when ya got enough
Get your hands full of water
Ya snort an ya snuff
An' go blud-dle-ud-dle-ud-dle
Ud-dle-um-dum ;)

I was on this cruise. I couldn't have been more impressed by the response by Disney. I also noticed that the Mickey pool was closed for cleaning by early afternoon on embarkation day, AND I overheard a "how did they find out, you didn't say it on the health form, so why are you quarantined now?" conversation in the hallway, so I have a hunch that people got on the ship sick. Having had norovirus twice in the last 3 years, I'm painfully aware of how quickly it comes on. That being said, it does seem like some person (people?) knowingly got on the ship sick.

So far, we have stayed healthy. We did not let this ruin our trip. We continued going to all meals and activities. We DID stop taking the elevators and I did try to avoid using the public restrooms on the ship once we saw that the buffets were no longer self-serve. I'm not yet willing to say that we're out of the woods, since we were in that customs line from 9-10 and it sounds like there may have been some spewing happening ahead of us that was holding things up, but we did at least make it home without incident. This will not stop us from sailing Disney again. If anything, seeing the incredible response makes us more willing to sail Disney, because we saw how seriously they took the situation.

So glad to hear you had a great cruise.

Noro, and others are always boarding with the pax.

We must welcome them all after all, yes?

All these parasites are present prior, and board every week fwiw

This is nothing new.

Many pax aboard all sailings are sick.

Just like a land hotel / All inclusive.

Often the source of virus is not the ship. It was brought aboard.

Not sure why the media and many feel it's related, or the ship's fault.

I always felt it was unfair grading the vessel, for some reason.

If you study the data, the ports have nothing to do with these issues.
It's just the CDC requirement to report at a certain %, and the twisted media click bait scenario.

Imagine if small towns had to report outbreaks to the CDC.
Perhaps airlines? ? ?

It's a tough subject for some.

IMO

I had noro once, caught it on a road trip from a restroom stop I'm guessing. I was 7 months pregnant. Lost 15 lbs in 3 days and was severely dehydrated. No one else in my family caught it.

I am a sanitizing NUT now, wash my hands so much they get cracked dry. So lots of lotion too ;)

I will be bringing the Purell wipes and Hydrogen Peroxide Cleaner Wipes with me on board & making sure my children (and Husband) practice good hygiene!!

It was literally the WORST 4 days of my life. I felt like I was on deaths door and was so close to being hospitalized.

I'm so glad Disney knew what to do and it did not severely impact the "fun" of those not infected!

Hey there Bear!

I have been informed that when the number of people effected hits 3%, then all vessels have to report it to CDC. There was another vessel the Balmoral of Fred Olsen lines, having novo issue in Norfolk.

And they only get to 3% if people report it. I'm sure there are plenty of people that get it and don't report it to medical, or disembark the next day and don't see the point, etc. It's hard to fix or control a problem you are unaware of.

Very true . Luckily we have never had it, but from what we read, its is pretty nasty. I would b thinking anyone with it would be looking for help and the Cabin stewards would notice it or at least the smell in a cabin.

I would also find anyone who after being restricted to their cabins, and still choose to go walking around or to the MDR to be really self centered and not interested in other guests and the CM's.

One would think, but we also have a way of deluding ourselves when we're on vacation. And with children, it's hard to tell too how bad it is and how much they're faking it to get sympathy - entirely dependent on the family dynamic there, but I know some children will milk even the slightest headache to the point that mom and dad don't think anything is as bad as they claim. As far as the smell, I'm sure those cabin stewards deal with some pretty strong odors on a daily basis. My mother joined us on our last trip, and she has a colostomy bag - the smell from that is something else, and she forgot air freshener, and there's no fans or anything in the cabins. We had to avoid her cabin almost the entire stay, and tipped our steward extra for having to freshen that room up twice a day! And if a guest insists that they are OK, just seasick, or hungover, or whatever, is the staff member likely to disagree with them? Or just say OK and move along?

I was on a 12 day Royal Cruise this past March where Noro was apparently detected. The crew was great and would not let anyone into any public place without first using Purell hand sanitizer. The crew was also very vigilant about wiping down railings, chairs, counters, and everything else you can think of. After about a week or so they still had Purell dispensers outside of every public place but did not enforce it. No one on our cruise got sick. That being said I'm sure Disney would take the same precautions as well.

I've never heard of a Noro type virus on an airline. Has that ever happened?

I know they had the famous Legionnaire's Disease in the 70's in a Philadelphia hotel -- that was probably a precursor to the Norovirus.

I googled "norovirus airplane" and it brought up articles. I think I want to bring those peroxide wipes for next time I fly.

I've never cruised before and was wondering, is it ok to drink the water in your room? this water thing is freaking me out! How can water from your room be any worse than water from a dispenser that everyone and his brother is using and abusing? Not paying for expensive bottled water either. Am planning to use a S'well bottle and know to use the clean cup to refill my bottle but also understand a great many people won't use a clean cup. Again, my question is, can you drink the water in your room and if not, why?

Yes, you can drink the water from the faucet in your room.

As Maggies mom pointed out the water from the room tap is fine and likely better then most municipal water systems.

WE usually bring a 6 pack of bottled water and then refill the bottles from the room taps and use on shore trips. Saves alot of money.

Have a great trip.

Thank you, thought I'd read every post but obviously missed one or two. We will be flying in and don't want to lug water so opted for the S'well bottles instead.

We've always drunk the water in the room, and never had a problem with it. You also don't have to deal with others outside your family dirtying it up. I do try to use the sink in the shower versus the sink in the toilet, since they're split bathrooms - just something about drinking water right next that the potty has never sat well with me :)
