How expensive is a 2 bedroom apartment in your area? They are outrageous here.

Well, it really depends on what kind of apartment you want to live in. You can find one with kind of scary neighbors and not very many amenities for $500-$600.

If you want to feel safe and if you want things like pools, fitness center, gated entry, etc, then you're going to be paying at least $800, but the *really* nice ones are more like $1000+

Not so nice ones $700 - $800. Pretty okay ones $900 - $1100.
Nice ones $1100 - $1300. Great ones $1400 and up!

(chicago---and this isn't one of the best neighborhoods either, for say Lincoln Park, up every category by at least $150)

The apartment I used to live in (Central NJ) was $1,000 per month for a 750sq ft 1 bedroom. The 2 bedrooms were around anywhere from $1300-$1700 depending on if you had a fireplace or not. And that was one of the better buildings in town with washer/dryer in the apartment; pool/tennis court; etc. Not including utilities BTW.

It was really ridiculous.

$1400 for an average one. more than that for a luxury one (fireplace, new construction, etc.).

dh and i pay about $1350 for ours (on the lower end of average), but that is because we have lived here for 5 years. people coming into our complex now pay about $1450.

this is in a suburb (20 miles away) of downtown dc.

in 1999/2000 in downtown dc our tiny 1 bedroom apartment cost us $2000/month + utilities + parking. i shudder to think what it is like now!

We just rented a one bedroom for DS on Beacon Hill for $1295 a month.
Very small, but a large compared to some we looked at (bedroom fits a king bed).

2 bedrooms started at $1600, I doubt you would even get a full size bed in the bedrooms for that price.
One could spend a fortune to rent there! We thought of buying something, but he's not sure if he's going to transfer his Junior Year, so that left that option out.

My DD and her roommate pay $4,000 a month for a two-bedroom in the West Village in Manhattan. My nephew is paying $2,000 for a small one-bedroom.

I can only speak for my surrounding area that a 2 bedroom would be anywhere from $900 to $1400 per month....depending on amenities.

DBF and I pay $746 for a 2 bedroom, 800 sq footer but it's owned by his medical school so rent is much lower than it would normally be. In a place RIGHT around here (I'm in a good area, there are MANY not-so-good areas) I'd say for a 2 bedroom it'd be at least $1,000- for nicer apartment complexes, maybe $1400. A friend of ours is renting a 1 br for $900.

Another friend moving to the area is looking at a 1600 sq foot 2 br for $1325.

Other areas maybe 15 min away could be as low as $600.

Apartments around here range from $350-$800/month. It all depends on who owns them. Most of them are houses converted into apartments or apartments above commercial businesses. We don't have too many complexes. The ones we do have do not have pools or any other amenities.

Northern New Jersey just outside NYC, decent 2 bedroom's start at about $1900 plus utilities.

When we moved out of our average 2 bed/1 bath apartment 1 1/2 years ago we were paying $1400, gas included.

ETA
I just looked at their website, 2 bedrooms now start at $1475

On average, in a semi decent neighborhood... $2400+ You can find a 2bdrm in a crappy area and the apt will be run down for $1400- but usually you won't want to live there. I got REALLY lucky and my broker was cousin's with my current landlord so after we had looked at 50+ apartments and still not found what we needed (A huge bedroom for our huge furniture) he talked his cousin into lower the rent on the apt we liked to $1550. So we got a completely new 2 bdrm apt (all new walls, floors, appliances, etc) for a "steal" in this town. My friends are all paying more than that for a one bdrm or a studio.
Edit: After reading the above poster's comment I wanted to add that water and heat are included in our place too, we pay cooking gas and electric only.

I would say probably about 700-1000 here depending on how un ghetto you want your apartment to be.

Anywhere between about $300/month for college type apartments, ok places, nothing fancy to about $650 for a nice apartment in a nice complex. We don't have any unsafe areas in town just because it is a small town.

Ours is currently $850 in a nice safe but average middle class neighborhood. We have a pool but not much else. Before we found our townhouse we were looking at TONS of rentals. A decent 2br that would allow pets was anywhere from $775 to $1000 depending on neighborhood and amenities.

When we lived in Biloxi, we paid nearly 1/2 what we do now for a larger place in a great neighborhood. For the price we pay now, we had a fabulous 2br with all the bells and whistles, gated, desirable neighborhood. Then we moved to VA and got the shock of our lives :earseek:

Ours is $800 per month for 1176 square feet (2 BR, 2 BA). It is gated and has a pool and tennis courts. They say they have a fitness center, but it’s really just a room with a few treadmills and some hand weights, LOL. For the suburbs of Atlanta, that’s about average (maybe $50 higher than average since our complex is newer). To live within the city, you’re looking at around $1200-ish for the same type of apartment. I would describe ours as not luxury (like the ones with granite countertops, jetted tubs, etc.), but not low end either—somewhat middle of the road, leaning slightly nicer since it’s in a desirable area.

We just moved into a two bedroom (first floor of a brownstone rowhouse) in Forest Hills, Queens. We got a GREAT rent at $1,550 per month. I didn't realize how great our deal was until we found out that a studio just down the street in a typical highrise goes for $1,700.

Added bonus, our subway line is less than a 10 minute walk from our place, and just a 15-20 minute ride into midtown Manhattan.
