If your reservation is eligible for MyMagic+, you can still get MagicBands even if you don't have theme park admission linked to your MDE account. What you can't do is make FastPass+ selections without valid theme park admission linked to your MDE account.

I wonder when this is due to happen, as I've tried to log into magic band customization and it states the product is not available yet. I really don't want to end up with grey bands (though, they will sell covers for them).

If you are unable to customize MagicBands, your reservation has not been selected for testing MyMagic+ and you will not automatically receive MagicBands. If you are staying at a test resort during the test period and you weren't pre-selected for testing, you may be given the opportunity at check-in. If they ask you at check-in, you will get grey MagicBands if you opt in then.
