How far out from your expiration do they contact you about renewing?

We expire towards the end of August, but our block out starts June 3rd. We intend to upgrade, so i'm wondering if we could renew earlier and essentially "unblock" ourselves? Or do we have to wait until the ones we have now are done? If that makes any sense, lol.

You can renew as early as 60 days before your expiration/anniversary date.

You can change to any other kind of AP at the time you renew, but...
It does not affect your expiration/anniversary date.

So your "new" AP type would not take effect until your original expiration/anniversary date.

NOTE:
If you want to change to a "new" AP type that would take effect earlier (at which time you arrive at WDW before your current expiration/anniversary date) you would need to
purchase an entirely new AP at full price.

ETA- Or pay to upgrade to a "new level" of AP for this trip and still have your "new" AP expire in August.
(As you would still be purchasing an upgrade for a current AP.)
No pro-rating of fees on AP upgrades.

I'd like to know that too since my pass is up on Oct 31st however we are planning to stay on property from Nov 4th-7th and would like to book things 60 days out {which if my sister and my passes aren't valid as it's a few days after expiration it won't let us} Would it be best for us to renew in September, eat the cost of the last month and lock in the present passholder rate before the inevitable price hike on October 1st or just renew wine and dine weekend and get screwed over on FP+

That takes care of the 60-days-before FP+ booking.

Unless I am reading this incorrectly, I don't think this info is correct. You can upgrade an AP at anytime, you just have to pay the difference - which is pro-rated.

I had a DVC AP with a renewal date of 12/21/15. I had a trip planned for Oct 2015 which was after they made the changes to APs to include photopass so I upgraded my AP to a Gold AP which included photopass and it only cost me $19. I then renewed my AP in late November.

That's semi-correct.
The "new level" of AP could be purchased immediately (at the difference cost between the current AP and the new level of AP.)
BUT, there is no "pro-rating" when upgrading an AP during it's year of validity.

But, the OP's "new" AP would then still expire in August.
If that's satisfactory, and the cost is not too high, have at it.

I'm confused - do you have a FL resident seasonal AP?(now called a Silver AP) That is the only AP with black out dates for the summer. When are you trying to go? You can upgrade to a Gold AP but you would have to pay the difference - which may or may not be worth it. Otherwise, you can't renew before 60 days and at that time you can upgrade the AP but I don't think it will take affect until your expiration date.

I agree - for me it was so little, it was worth it. I guess because I went from a reg AP to a Gold AP with blackout dates it was minimal - which made me think it was pro-rated.
