Here's the situation.
June 27 through July 2 we will be in three studios at SSR.
Then we are supposed to switch to Shades of Green for July 3-8.

All the talk about SOG construction delays worries me a little. I don't really want to be at a resort where construction is still in full swing. Also, they are doubling capacity, but not adding any new pools. I can just imagine how crowded the pools will be in the heat of summer....

This weekend, while visiting my BIL's, my BIL Brad mentions that he would really love to stay at the Contemporary.

So, are AP rates usually offered around July 4th?
What are SOG rates usually like for CR garden wing rooms?
I know when we were moved over there because of construction we paid the SOG rate of $89.

Would rates I am looking for be considered overflow rates? Or just SOG discount rate?

I guess that I need to ask a few questions.

Do you have APs or are you planning on buying them?
If you were offered 'overflow rates' at the Contemporary- they wouldn't necessarily be able to offer you a garden wing room. And, the only way (in the past) that they'd offer an "overflow" rate is if it was within 30 days of the date that you wanted to stay, and they were booked solid.

You wouldn't be able to get a SoG discount rate because the hotel would be open. However, the 'rack' rate of a garden wing room was $234 per night when we stayed there last.
In fact, we'll be there in less than 2 weeks!!

I hope that this helps.......

We have received overflow rooms MONTHS out through SOG for just about any resort. The rates can vary depending on the season and how far in advance you book. Do a search on this forum and look for info from FirstNo. She had lots of info about the 3 overflow rates that could be offered for a resort(lowest rates go first). They usually are about the same as an AP or FL resident rate, so we usually just go with that now. :D Though we have gone with overflow when the others are not available or when strange holiday rules kick in-overflow rates usually are good on holidays.

Thanks for the additional information!!

We'd gotton overflow rates months in advance before SoG closed for renovation, but when we tried to get overflow after they closed for construction, reservations told us that we had to be booking within 30 days of our arrival date and they had to be booked up for us to be offered overflow.

However- it all worked out in the end...

I guess like CM's different SOG workers tell/do different things! :p
We got last Oct reservations through SOG several months out. I can't remember if we kept this or changed to a FL rate. But we made them months out.
I will be interested to learn what it will be like to get overflow with the new SOG open, especially when it is fully open. Anyone who gets info, please post! I'll do the same. :D

What the original poster is describing is different than what you guys are discussing. It sounds as though SoG is already booked for their upcoming July stay and now s/he is looking for SoG discounted rates for the Contemporary. That won't happen. If you have a room at SoG, then you don't 'need' overflow rates. You follow what I'm saying?

The AP discounts could be as much as 40% off rack rates for July but there is no info available as to discounts right now. I can almost guarantee, lol, it will be quite a bit more than your SoG $89 rate last time!

All she has to do is cancel the SOG rooms if she finds out overflow is available. Or if the resort is still not finished, they will offer it to them as an alternative I imagine. I think overflow for a wing room, last time I asked SOG, was around $200. More than the $99 we just paid again! That was a deal of a lifetime, so we did it a couple trips.
I would give SOG a call and ask them these questions telling them your concerns. Ask if they have overflow and what the rates are that week. Then you can decide what to do! I think I would go with overflow, if available, instead of SOG. JMHO.

Thanks for the input.
I know that the $89 rate won't be offered again. We were lucky to get it when we did.

I guess I will try and call (if we get through, they are swamped right now) and ask about overflow rates.
Then cross my fingers that AP rates become available for July 4.

I called yesterday to check for overflow rates for August, and I was told that since they have rooms available for our dates, they wouldn't even check for overflows.

Ah, but you see, Jul 4 is a peak time frame and I have little doubt that week was sold out before Fall was over last year (unless they were holding on to rooms to book once they were sure of their opening). In that case (it reads like they have changed the rules yet again and gone back to only offering overflow if SoG is full), the original poster should have no problem requesting overflow.

Now, as to the rates: two years ago, you could expect a wing room to go for about $140/nt (not including tax). Yes, that was a discounted rate and it was the cheapest they would have to offer during a peak time frame (off peak, it was about $125). Two would go to close to $200/nt, inclusive of tax.

I have no doubt that Disney has raised their rates. I would count on an overflow rate of no less than $150. I could be wrong and it never hurts to place that toll free call. Try to place it mid week and avoid when they first open and the last hour. 10-11am or 2-3pm were usually slower times of the day, but they are still in peak season for phone calls. Good luck and let us know what they tell you. I'm curious as to what the overflow rates for the CR are going for. :)

OK...I was only pointing out that as of yesterday, at least with the rep that I spoke to, they won't check on overflow unless the SoG is sold out. I wasn't advising the OP whether she should or shouldn't try, just trying to get some current info out there about overflows when the resort is not sold out.

I was given the same information about a month ago when I was calling for June. SoG wasn't sold out, so I could not get a quote for overflow.

Hasn't that always been the case?

:::hi firstno :) ::::
