Our AP is set to expire end of May 2022. Will we receive renewal email from Disney or is this something we must do on our own prior to the current expiration date.

You will need to call member services to renew. Assuming you are on the old gold pass you should be able to renew with a sorceror's pass. If you were on the higher level one (I can't remember the name) you might be able to renew to the incredipass online (otherwise call). Regardless you need to start the process on your own. It will not automatically renew.

You might receive notification either by snail mail or email, but don't rely on it. If you intend to renew, call MS before the renewal window closes which is 30 days after expiration date of the pass.

Mine was to expire last month. I had a Platinum Pass. I called the pass line in February and renewed it to a Sorcerer's pass.
