In order to get the discount renewal rate for an AP, do I have to do it before my pass expires? Or can I do it whenever?

In order to get the discount renewal rate for an AP, do I have to do it before my pass expires? Or can I do it whenever?

You can renew 30 days prior and I hope 30 days after.
Last year my AP expired 11/27, and I renewed at DTD on 12/3.
This year my AP still expires on 11/27 and I will be arriving on 12/13.
